Chapter 18: The Best Combination and the Best Combination

A few days later, daytime, at the headquarter of Five Star

“Now then, this kind of interior should be enough to be called the headquarters of Five Star.”

Elena-sama murmured, seemingly satisfied with the result.

“I agree. Thanks to the new sofas and round table from Elena-sama and Jeff-sama, the room feels completely different from before.”

I replied while staring at Rina, who had already jumped onto the plush sofa with a cute teddy bear in her arms. Mia-sama sat next to her, stroking Rina’s head affectionately. 

I didn’t have any money so all of these luxurious furnitures were provided by Elena-sama and Jeff-sama.

Unlike in Japan, where the school would provide the furniture for after-school activities, but here, we had to prepare these kinds of things ourselves. 

Though… It’d be nice if the school would provide it for us, given how expensive the tuition fees were. 

In any case, now that the meeting room(or should I say, headquarters) had become clean and beautiful, we could finally enjoy our lunch here. We were sitting together around the round table, feeling pleased with the change. 

As usual, my little sister’s eating habits were unbecoming for a lady. She never went through a noble mannership lesson so Mia-sama gently pointed out and taught her the proper way to eat. 

I felt bad for Mia-sama everytime she did this. However, seemingly noticing the complex emotions brewing in my mind, Jeff-sama gave me a thumbs up instead. 

We finished our meal peacefully. After our meal, we relaxed while drinking a cup of tea that Mia-sama had brewed for us. 

Sunlight came peering in through the window, illuminating the round table with its gentle light. Dust particles shimmered around, seemingly inviting us to slumber. The steady, faint breathing of all five of us reached my ear, lulling me even more. 

But then, suddenly, a question popped in my mind. 

And so, I decided to ask them straight.

“By the way, Mia-sama, Jeff-sama, what kind of magic are you guys good at?”

Right. I realized I didn’t know much about the two of them. I knew Jeff-sama was Albert-sama’s son and Mia-sama was Hannah-sama’s little sister. I knew that both of their families had a close connection with the Duke Fibel family but that was it. 

Hence why, I believed I needed to know more about them. 

However… Although I asked that question out of genuine curiosity, the two of them suddenly turned grim. The question seemed to make them feel dejected. 

Jeff-sama cleared his throat, trying to conceal the sudden change in mood. 

“I’m good at defense magic, although I don’t use magic much.”

“Huh? Why don’t you use it much?”

I asked and Jeff-sama averted his gaze from me. 

“From the look on your face… It seems you don’t understand, huh?”

“Huh? What?”

“This kingdom only favors healing and attack magic.”

“….”

Upon hearing Jeff-sama’s words, I remembered some snippets of conversation among the advanced class students that I accidentally overheard.

『Why does defense magic even exist?』

『You can easily improve your defense by training your body or buy some good armor and magic tools anyway. In that case, we just need to focus on training attack magic since having high defense can be easily achieved through other means.』

『Ahahaha! Man, I feel bad for those people whose talent lies in defense magic. I heard there are some of them in the lowest class.』

『Oh! Speaking about defense magic, don’t forget about enhancement magic too! Man, what’s the point of them? They’re so unnecessary. I’m not even kidding right now.』

『Yeah! Enhancement magic users are just parasites. They contribute nothing to the party! They’re just leeching off the attack magic users! So utterly useless!』

Judging from the conversation I overheard, that means, Mia-sama is probably…

She murmured, as if she had just confessed a grave crime. Even though Mia-sama had looked so graceful when she taught Rina etiquette, but now she looked so dejected and sullen.

“Jeff! Mia! I told you not to worry about it, right?! Your value is not determined by what kind of magic you excel at!”

Elena-sama slammed her palm onto the round table, making the two of them smile bitterly. 

I see. So the reason why they’re in the lowest class is because of the trait of magic they excel at. I heard the two of them have better results in theoretical exams than those people in the advanced class. This. This moment is the missing puzzle. I finally understand now…

The people in this kingdom… They are severely underestimating the prowess of magic. 

I turned my gaze to Jeff-sama and Mia-sama. The two of them still looked sullen so I excitedly said…

“What a wonderful combination!”

“”What?””

All four of them said in unison.

“Elena-sama is good at close combat because of her sword. Jeff-sama is good at defense magic. Rina is good at healing magic and Mia-sama can provide support from the back with enhancement magic. If you add my long-range attack magic into the equation…..”

I trailed off deliberately and smiled at Jeff-sama and Mia-sama. 

“This means our party has the best combination ever. Jeff-sama, Mia-sama, your abilities are absolutely essential for the balance of our party!”

Jeff-sama and Mia-sama stared at me with their eyes wide open. They were staring so hard I felt like a hole would be created from their gaze alone. 

“My, oh my… To be comforted by a commoner… Kanato,I admit. Today is my loss, but next time, I will definitely win, okay?~”

“Win? Huh? There was a competition?”

Now that his usual cheery personality had returned, Jeff-sama suddenly started twirling like a ballerina. 

Seeing him regaining his spirit back, I sighed, feeling relieved. 

However, suddenly, an announcement from the school blared throughout the whole building.

『Emergency quest! Emergency quest! A request has arrived from the royal palace. Students with a Level 5 party, please come to the student council room immediately. I repeat-』

It seemed an opportunity had arrived for us.

Harry, the eldest son of Duke Percy, came to visit the Graham residence after he finished his work at the royal palace. He skipped school today.

Seeing Bern’s face, which had recovered significantly compared from before, Harry spoke confidently.

Disgusting smile formed on Bern’s face. But then, Bern noticed something strange on Harry’s neck.

There was an old scar on Harry’s neck.

“By the way, Harry-sama… There’s something I’ve always been curious about.”

“What is it?”

“That scar on your neck…. What happened?”

“Oh? This?”

Harry said while rubbing the scar with his hand gently. 

“I was bitten by a cute little kitten when I was younger.”

“Ooh! What naughty little kitten! We will need to train that kitten thoroughly so it won’t dare to bite Harry-sama again! However… Given that Harry-sama has become wonderfully handsome like this, I guess the problem with the little kitten is already over, huh?”

“Indeed. I guess that commoner girl would’ve been happier with you instead of living with her dull brother.”

The two of them stared at each other for a few seconds before they started chuckling.
