- Chapter 30 - Limit
Limit
After dinner, while I’m in the bath, Souji-kun takes care of the dishes and brewed iced coffee for me when I got out of bathroom.
Souji-kun is acting as if my apartment is his own house.
“Ami-san, shall I help you dry your hair? Please lend me your hairdryer.”
“No, it’s fine. I can do it myself.”
“Come on, don’t say that. Let me do it for you.”
Souji-kun takes the hairdryer from me and start to dry my head, completely ignoring my words.
His fingers run through my hair while he blows warm air with the hair dryer.
He seems quite good with it…
This clearly isn’t his first time drying someone’s hair.
He must often do this to Emi, right?
Or maybe it’s the other way around, Emi often asks Souji-kun to do it for her?
“Thank you very much. You’re quite good at this. Do you often do this for Emi?”
“Yes, Emi-san often asks me to dry her hair, so I help her out.”
“I knew it.”
I take a sip of the iced coffee and turn on the TV.
I go through various channels, but there doesn’t seem to be anything interesting on.
Eventually, I turn off the TV.
Ughh…
This feels kind of awkward…
Honestly, there are so many things I want to talk and ask Souji-kun, but if I do, it might seem like I’m accepting him, so it’s hard for me to begin the conversation…
This is why I don’t want to meet Souji-kun in the first place.
As I’m silently thinking about it, Souji-kun mutters to himself with that kind smile on his face.
“I knew it, being by your side is the most comforting for me, Ami-san. Even after all these years of not seeing each other, I still find it really comforting to be by your side.”
“…is that so? I don’t feel comfortable at all.”
“Back in our third year of middle school, we used to spend time like this together every weekend. At that time, I used to think you didn’t need to come over every weekend, but somehow, I started looking forward to your visits.”
“Is that so…I didn’t know that.”
“Yeah, I just remembered and realized it now. I don’t think I was aware of it at that time.”
“That’s really nostalgic…those days were really fun.”
Compared to those days when I enjoyed every single day of my life with my sparkling love, I have changed so much.
Hating Mama and Papa, leading Mama to her death, living alone, working at the factory and coming home covered in oil every day.
I gave up on love a long time ago.
Oh no…
My tears are welling up…
I don’t want Souji-kun to see me like this…
“I need to go to the bathroom.”
As I try to turn away and stand up, I feel Souji-kun’s hand grabbing me, pulling me closer and embracing me.
“Don’t hold back, please cry as much as you want. Didn’t I comfort you like this many times in the past? You don’t need to hesitate.”
I can’t take it anymore. I’m not strong enough to pretend anymore.
“Ughh…”
Souji-kun hugs me, patting my back gently without saying a single word.
I continue to cry in Souji-kun’s arms for a while.
In the end, is it impossible for me to live alone?
Just thinking about the past makes me cry easily.
I’ve pretended to be strong, saying I’ll carry Mama’s sins and live alone, but I find myself wishing to go back to those days.
Before I knew it, I’m reaching out for Souji-kun’s and Emi’s hands.
On that day, we don’t have any more discussions and just casually chat with each other before going to bed.

The next day is a holiday, but Souji-kun still prepares breakfast for us early in the morning. So, we have our breakfast together.
After finishing his breakfast, Souji-kun starts to do the laundry.
“Ami-san, since you’re tired from working every day, please take a good rest and relax today. I’ll take care of all the housework.”
“Okay…”
There are even my underwear and such in the laundry basket, but since we have done our laundry together many times in the past, I decided to let him do it.
To be honest, since I started working, I often just lounged around all day on my days off. My meals, cleaning and laundry has become somewhat neglected, so I do really appreciate the help.
After Souji-kun finished with the laundry, he starts to clean the kitchen. I leave him to it and begin reading a book I haven’t touched in a while.
After about an hour of concentrated reading, Souji-kun prepares a glass of cold tea and places it in front of me.
“Thank you.”
When I say so, Souji-kun smiles and returns to cleaning the kitchen.
As I’m taking a sip from the glass and watch him go back to the kitchen, the intercom rings.
I place a bookmark in my book, put it on the table, and get up to answer the intercom.
“Hey Onee-chan, it’s been a while! I’ve come too!”
It’s Emi.
