Good Luck Charm

Just before winter break, the students are all in full exam mode.

Everyone seems tense.

At school, we are getting constant quizzes of Japanese and English subjects.

As the time approaches, I’ve started hearing some of my classmates changing their preferred schools into a lower ranked one.

There some of my classmates who seem really stressed about their entrance exam, while there are some others remain nonchalant as always.

At home, Mama always tells me,

“Are you studying properly? Don’t embarrass yourself by failing your high school entrance exam.”

Can’t Mama just support and praise me?

My grades have improved a lot compared to the first semester, but yet she keeps saying things to discourage me.

In the past, I wouldn’t have been bothered by things like this, but now that I see how much Mama hates Souji-kun, I’m getting annoyed myself.

I can’t help but find Mama’s attitude towards Souji-kun is simply embarrassing and shameful.

Is that how an adult supposed to behave?

I can’t help but think so.

Thankfully, Souji-kun is handling the situation maturely.

During the winter break, Souji-kun would stay in his room all day long to study.

No matter if it’s Christmas or New Year’s Eve, Souji-kun is just focused on studying.

The only time I went to Souji-kun’s room lately was after midnight on the New Year’s Eve, I made a pot of coffee, brought it to his room, and wished him a Happy New Year.

When I went to Souji-kun’s room, he didn’t seem stressed at all, but he is rather calm and collected as always.

Well, Souji-kun is very smart after all, he has the ability to aim for his desired high school without any problem, so he doesn’t have to worry much at this point. As for me, even when my homeroom teacher told me, ‘You’ll be fine’ I can’t help but to feel anxious and study all the time.

Speaking of New Year’s. something surprising happened. Souji-kun and I were at home studying while Mama, Papa and my little sister Emi went to the first shrine visit of the year, but when Emi came back, Emi gave me and Souji-kun good luck charms for the success in our exams.

It’s not unusual for Emi to give something to me, so it isn’t that surprising, however, it is unusual for Emi to get one for Souji-kun as well.

I thought that Emi doesn’t like Souji-kun at all.

Emi has been selfish and egotistical since she was a little girl. I have had to put up with her selfishness many times.

Even after entering middle school, I was worried that she would still act the same way at school.

In fact, Emi even quitted the tennis club just before summer vacation, I was really worried of her.

However, when she came back from her first visit to the shrine, she comes to my room.

“I bought two good luck charms for Onee-chan and Ando-senpai.”

Emi says so while handing me the good luck charms.

“Eh? Eh?? What do you mean?”

“Onee-chan and Ando-senpai will take an entrance exam soon, right? Here are good luck charms for both Onee-chan and Ando-senpai’s success in the exams. If I give it to Ando-senpai myself, Mama will surely make a fuss about it, so please give it to him. Onee-chan is quite close with Ando-senpai, right?”

“……”

I’m so confused that I can’t say anything back to Emi.

“That’s why, please give it to Ando-senpai for me.”

“W-Wait a minute! I’d like to confirm a few things…why do you think that Onee-chan and Souji-kun are quite close?”

“Eh? What are you talking about, Onee-chan? You usually go to Ando-senpai’s room in the middle of the night to hang out with him, right? I also know that you often go to school with Ando-senpai during the summer break.”

“S-Seriously…?”

“Yeah. Oh, but no one else know about it, so don’t worry. Of course, Mama doesn’t know either.”

“I-I see…”

“Also, I used to ignore Ando-senpai, so Onee-chan might think that I hate him, but the truth is I don’t. I also apologized to Ando-senpai for my behaviour and ignoring him at home, and he forgave me, however, Ando-senpai said that it’s okay to ignore him and he prefers me to stay like that because of Mama.”

“Really!? I had no idea…”

“Yeah, unlike Mama, I’m just pretending to act cold towards Ando-senpai after properly discussing about it with him.”

“I see…so Emi doesn’t hate Souji-kun at all. I misunderstood you, Emi. Forgive Onee-chan.”

“It’s okay…just make sure to give the good luck charm to Ando-senpai.”

“Ah, isn’t it better for you to give it yourself? I can message him if you want.”

“Eh? You can message him?”

“Yeah, don’t tell Mama, but both me and Souji-kun have our own smartphones. So, we can contact each other whenever we want.”

“I see…”

“Don’t tell Mama about this!”

Saying so, I take out my smartphone and send a message to Souji-kun asking if he can come to the park.

“I just sent a message to Souji-kun asking if he can come to the park. If he replies, go ahead and meet him.”

“You’re not going, Onee-chan?”

“I need to study for my entrance exams, it’s okay for Emi to talk with Souji-kun alone, right? Ah, Souji-kun just replied. He says he will be there in about ten minutes. Go right ahead.”

“Well, that’s true…okay then, I’ll get going now. Thank you, Onee-chan.”

“Yeah, thank you for the good luck charm, Emi.”

The reason why I don’t want to give Emi’s good luck charm to Souji-kun is because I don’t want to spoil her, and also, I want Emi to get along with Souji-kun.

Souji-kun, I’m not the only one supporting you in this house, but Emi is also supporting you.
