- Chapter 32 - Middle School Graduation
Middle School Graduation
Me and Souji-kun have our middle school graduation ceremony at the beginning of March.
The ceremony is held solemnly, and the student council president, Souji-kun, gave a speech as a representative of the graduates.
As I listen to Souji-kun’s speech, I remembered the time when he came to our house.
It has been almost a year since then.
At first, I was so nervous that I couldn’t even speak properly to Souji-kun.
On top of that, I was really against the idea of living with a boy.
Even now, I don’t want people to know that we are living together…
Despite being the same age as me, Souji-kun is completely different from me in every way. He is very nice, polite, diligent, mature, composed, and has a very gentle smile.
I stared to take an interest in him, talk to him and reflected on my own behaviour. Each day, I find myself becoming more and more attracted to him, and eventually falling in love with him.
Before I knew Souji-kun, my middle school life had always been really boring, there wasn’t really anything noteworthy that I can share with others, my life was just really dull.
But since Souji-kun came into my life, I feel like those days are truly the days of my youth, shining brightly.
I got to experience my first love, and it was also the first time I had ever studied that hard.
It’s all thanks to Souji-kun.
As I listen to Souji-kun’s speech, I reminisce the memories of this past year. Before I knew it, tears are flowing down my cheeks.
I should thank Souji-kun properly later.
I want to thank him for all the things he has done for me this past year.
After the graduation ceremony ended, we return to our classroom for our last homeroom session.
Since the entrance exams for public high schools are just a few days away, most students are still in exam mode. The teachers refrain from making overly joyful remarks, understanding the serious atmosphere.
Thus, the homeroom session concluded. The students disperse while hugging and shedding tears. Me and my friends go to our teacher’s office to express our gratitude and bid our farewells.
When I pack my bags and go outside, the area around the school gate is bustling with people.
I look around, trying to find Souji-kun to express my gratitude to him, but he is surrounded by many students and it doesn’t seem like the right time for a private conversation.
I want to go home with Souji-kun at least for today, so I told Mama who attended the graduation ceremony that I want to stay a little longer to chat with friends and asked her to go home first.
I chat with Sakura-chan and the others while waiting for Souji-kun to be freed from the crowd.
Souji-kun politely greets each classmate and teacher who comes to talk to him.
As expected of the handsome student council president.
Even people who normally have a hard time talking to Souji-kun seem to be talking to him for this one day, it’s as if they have decided that they want to at least talk to Souji-kun today.
At first, Souji-kun seems to be calm and collected as usual, but then he finds himself in a bit of a panic as the first and second graders start to gather around him.
“I’m sorry, I’ll go help Souji-kun now! I’ll be in touch!”
I said so to Sakura-chan and the others then head straight to Souji-kun, navigating through the chaotic crowd.
When I managed to reach Souji-kun, I grab his arm, put my face close to his ear,
“Souji-kun, let’s go home!”
I say so loudly and clearly.
Upon hearing my words, Souji-kun’s expression softens into a gentle smile and he nods.
“Thank you all for this past year. Please take care of yourselves.”
Souji-kun says so greeting the students who has gathered around him.
Then, as if being pulled by me, we leave the spot.
Amidst the attention of many students, teachers and parents, I walk alongside Souji-kun, holding onto his arm.
I continue to walk in silence while Souji-kun, who is being pulled by me, says ‘Thank you’ or ‘Goodbye’ each time someone calls out to him.
When we got out of the school gate, I let go of Souji-kun’s arm.
“I’m sorry for dragging you out, Souji-kun. It was getting out of control, so I had to do something about it.”
“No, thank you. I couldn’t have handled that situation myself. To be honest, I was overwhelmed, so I really appreciate your help.”
“Umm, so…can we go home together at least for today?”
“Yeah, of course. Let’s go home together.”
As I walk side by side with Souji-kun, I slowly share our memories since the first time he came to our house.
Souji-kun listens to me quietly, nodding along.
The distance between me and Souji-kun is really close that our shoulders are almost touching each other’s. I feel really happy that we are able to walk home together like this, but I also feel sad thinking that today will be the first and last time.
When we arrive at our neighbourhood, I invite Souji-kun to go to the park before going back home.
It wouldn’t be a good idea for us to go home together, as I don’t know how Mama might react about it. So as usual, we decided to hang out in the park for a while before heading back home separately.
We sit on a bench in the park together.
“Souji-kun, thank you for this past year. Thanks to you, I can study hard and enjoy my youth. If you hadn’t come into my life, my middle school memories would probably have been plain, dull and boring. Thank you so much.”
With these words, I kneel down, place my hand on the ground and bow my head.
“No! That’s not true at all. If anything, I’m the one who have been receiving help from you all the time, Ami-san. The late-night snacks, the meals on holidays—you are my lifesaver. Also, thanks to Ami-san, I didn’t have to spend my time feeling lonely, I was able to enjoy my time instead. Thank you so much for everything.”
Souji-kun says so, kneeling down, place his hand on the ground and how his head just like I did.
I’m glad that I’m able to thank Souji-kun properly.
I’m also really happy that Souji-kun thanked me for what I have done to support him.
Thus ends the third year of middle school for me and Souji-kun.
