Handmade Cookies
Ever since I barged into Souji-kun’s room to study with him the other day, I began to visit him in the middle of the night on weekends regularly. Souji-kun doesn’t mind and let me into his room every time.
I wait for my parents to sleep, go down the kitchen, make some onigiri, prepare some snacks and coffee, then bring them to Souji-kun’s room. We enjoy these late-night snacks while chatting with each other. Of course, we also study together. Thanks to these study sessions, I’ve been able to catch up on my homework, which is a big help for me since I struggle with studying.
During the first few times, I was quite nervous and talked to Souji-kun formally all the time, but now I feel more relaxed around him. Souji-kun still talks formally to me, but I can feel that he is a little more relaxed talking to me now.
“Souji-kun, I often see you in the library. Do you like reading?”
“Yeah, that’s right. I don’t have to pay to read books in the library, since I got nothing else to do, it’s the perfect time killing activity for me.’
“I see, what kind of genre do you read?”
“Right now, I’m reading a historical novel written by Ryotaro Shiba.”
While saying so, Souji-kun takes the borrowed book out of his bag and shows it to me.
“I also like to read, but I’ve never read historical novels before. Just the word ‘history’ seems too hard for me.”
“It’s interesting and it’s not that difficult. Even though it is a history book, it is written as a story in this novel. Come to think of it Ami-san, you are in the literature club, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I got into the club because I love reading. Ryotaro Shiba, huh? I only know the name of the author, but I’ve never read any of his books before. I’ll try reading one of his novels next time.”
“Yeah, you should try to read them. All of his books are really interesting.”
We have such a great time and chat about various things all night long.
Before the final exams, I asked Souji-kun to help me study. Since my mom is always at home, we study together in the school library during the exam preparation period.
During this time, we don’t talk about unimportant things very much and focus on studying.
Thanks to my study sessions with Souji-kun, my rank improves in the final exam. I achieved the highest rank I have ever achieved.
Meanwhile Souji-kun, as anyone would expect, he is still in the first place.
I want to thank Souji-kun for helping me with my studies, so I decided to bake him cookies.
I lied to my mom saying I want to bake the cookies for everyone in the literature club.
I baked lots of cookies on Saturday afternoon.
Late that night, I put a lot of cookies wrapped cookies in a paper bag, prepared ice coffee, and go to Souji-kun’s room.
“Umm, Souji-kun. Thank you for helping me with my studies, I did very well at the final exams and I got the best rank I’ve ever achieved. So, I thought I wanted to thank you in some way…”
While saying so, I hand Souji-kun the paper bag filled with cookies.
Souji-kun receive the paper bag and take a peek inside.
“Ah, so the sweet smell this afternoon was from you baking cookies, Ami-san?”
“Yeah…since they’re homemade, they might not taste as good as the ones from a store.”
“Thank you. But is it really okay to give me this much?”
“Yeah, I made quite a lot of it because I wanted Souji-kun to have them all.”
“Can I go ahead and eat one now? Let’s eat it together.”
“Yeah!”
Souji-kun takes a cookie out of the paper bag, unwraps it on the table, and hold it in his hand. I pour the iced coffee in front of both Souji-kun and me, and then take a cookie out of the paper bag myself.
“Hmm, it’s really delicious. I think I’ll end up eating lots of it even though it’s the middle of the night.”
“Fufufu, good. But try not to gain weight…”
“Come to think of it, didn’t your mother ask you anything about the cookie? If you’re a making homemade cookies, she might suspect that you are giving them to someone.”
“Yeah, she did ask about it. I told her that I’m making it for everyone in the literature club. She didn’t ask any more questions after I told her so.”
“I see, that’s a clever disguise.”
“Eh? Disguise? What’s that?”
“Umm…to put it simply, it’s a word for hiding something you don’t want people to know about.”
“Hmm, it’s quite complicated. I don’t really get it…”
“Well, never mind. Don’t worry about it.”
(TN: They are talking about a complicated Kanji here)
We are going to study tonight, we are just going to chat all night long.
Souji-kun’s smile feels very warm. I don’t feel like going back to my room.
Souji-kun always keeps me company by chatting with me, without showing any displeasure.
Eventually, I got tired sitting the whole time. So, both me and Souji-kun decided to lay down on the tatami mat and continue chatting.
Then before I knew it, I fell asleep.
