Chapter 40: Mad Beast, Frenzied Rage
“GROOOOAAAAAAARRRRR!!!”
Rouga, now a massive wolf, let out a deafening howl.
Under the moonlight, there wasn’t a shred of humanity left in him.
—This is the power of Spirit Hosting’s Ascension.
An advanced Spirit Conduction technique where the user fuses completely with their Conceptual Spirit, covering their body with a spirit-infused frame, surpassing human limits.
“Heheheheh… thirty-eight…!”
A drunken voice echoed from the back of his throat.
“Riru and I have killed thirty-eight enemies with this power…! Kanata, how many have you killed?!”
“Hm.”
I may not have clean hands either.
In my first life, as a Reisoushi, I fought plenty of illegal Mediums.
I’ve stepped over my fair share of bodies.
“Well, who knows? But…”
“Huh?!”
“There might be two more to add to the list right now.”
“DIEEEE!!!”
Rouga, in his wolf form, charged at me.
Fast.
In just two steps, he closed the distance.
His massive front paw swung down, claws extended.
“DIEEEE, KANATAAAAA!!!”
Unbelievable speed. This is the power of Ascension, the strength of someone who has abandoned their humanity.
But—
“Pathetic.”
I leaned my body just slightly to the side.
That’s all it took. Just a small movement, and his lethal claws swiped through empty air.
The claws missed by mere millimeters, and the ground beneath me was ripped apart instead.
The shock from the miss froze Rouga in place for just a moment.
“What?!”
“You left yourself open.”
I gently pressed my fist against his snout— a fist charged with [Blank Shot].
And then—
“Hakkyokuken: Diamond Form – Piercing Fist!”
I unleashed a crushing strike. His massive body flew backward.
“GAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH?!”
Rouga tumbled through the air like a ragdoll.
He hit the ground, bouncing and rolling, blood splattering everywhere, staining the field of white lilies red.
“Don’t get cocky, mutt. You thought turning into a beast made you unbeatable?”
His speed earlier was impressive. That’s the power of a giant beast for you.
But still — lunging straight at me with a predictable move like that? Not very creative.
“It’s fine to surpass human limits. But why throw away human technique?”
Relying purely on brute strength. That kind of attack is like a slow-motion punch.
No matter how fast your reflexes are, if your timing is obvious, it’s easy to dodge or counter.
“Grrr… shut… UP!!!”
In an instant, Rouga revived again.
As if absorbing the moonlight, his broken body healed, and he charged toward me once more.
If that was all he did, it’d be easy to deal with, but—
“‘Chanting Technique – Initiating Construction.’”
Riru’s voice echoed through the canopy.
“‘I beseech the sighs of the night. The enslaved beast of the occult hymn demands…’”
This was a Chanting Technique.
A method where, by adding an incantation to a technique, the power of the spell increases significantly due to a binding vow.
Using words related to spirits helps the user or their target become more aware of that spirit, enhancing the power drawn from the Conceptual Spirit’s traits.
“It’s easy to interrupt a Chanting Technique. Just take them down before they finish.”
There she was — hiding behind one of the temple’s pillars, her hand pointed toward me.
I snapped my fingers in her direction. In that instant, she was blasted away.
“Riru?!”
“Did you think distance made you safe?”
This was an advanced use of [Blank Shot].
Shockwaves travel through air. By focusing the direction, I turned it into a mid-range explosive blast.
That should end it. Even a slight interruption would break her chant. But—
“Moon, shadow! Bestow upon me the black banner!”
Riru endured it.
Even as she was blown away, she completed her attack.
“Technique Release! [Familiar Creation: Bloodfang Homunculus]!”
Her palm split open.
A summoning circle formed, dripping with blood, and from it, thirteen red-and-black wolves leapt out.
“Awoooooooo!!!”
The summoned wolves howled as they charged toward me.
Their movements were bizarre — they disappeared into the shadows of the temple pillars, then flickered from one patch of white lilies to another, like a stop-motion animation.
“I see now.”
—It all made sense.
Her chanting, and the way she first emerged from Rouga’s shadow, gave it away.
“So, the girl’s ability is a strong expression of the ‘hiding’ trait of the [Werewolf] concept.”
Werewolves are creatures that blend into human society, spreading fear and paranoia.
For Riru, this trait manifested as the ability to move from shadow to shadow.
“And the familiars she created with her blood inherited that ability too.”
“Stop figuring everything out so damn fast!”
Rouga lunged at me, furious.
I didn’t dodge with a subtle move this time. I took a big step back.
The Bloodfang wolves immediately filled the gap, attacking one after another.
“Annoying mutts.”
I dodged their attacks and snapped my fingers, triggering small explosions.
“Grrrr!”
It’s no use. Since they carry Riru’s blood, they have her regeneration ability too.
They’re slower than Rouga, but still a hassle.
“Gwahahahaha!!! It’s pointless, POINTLESS! My sister and I — and the familiars she created — can’t die! We’re immortal! We’re invincible! Only our enemies die! THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT!!!”
Rouga howled in that grating voice of his.
He sounded manic, his pitch high and shaky, with his words starting to slur.
His ranting grew more childish, and his eyes glowed with an increasing feral intensity.
“I see… so that’s how it is.”
I understood his nature now.
This guy is a clear embodiment of the ‘monstrous’ side of the [Werewolf] concept.
An indiscriminate killer. A creature of the night that slaughters villagers one by one, a monster of the dark.
“And right now, you’re drowning in that savagery.”
Realizing that—ugh.
“It makes me even angrier.”
I stopped retreating.
“Gyaaahahaha! Finally giving up?!”
“No.”
I stopped dodging because it’s just not worth it anymore.
Attacks from brain-dead trash like you and your sister?
Pathetic.
“Seismic Stomp: Maximum Output.”
“Huh?!”
I stomped lightly on the ground.
And then—a magnitude 7 shockwave erupted, obliterating the flower field.
An ultra-vibration strong enough to liquefy a human body on contact. With a deafening BOOOOOOOM, the ground exploded, the white lilies scattered into pieces, and the stone temple shattered into rubble.
“Awoooooo?!”
The familiars dissolved into clouds of blood mist.
They were just inferior copies made of blood. They might regenerate eventually, but not instantly—not when they’re shredded into pulp.
“W-What kind of monster is this guy…?!”
“B-Brother… he’s a freak…!”
Rouga had managed to retreat just in time.
He leapt away, carrying Riru in his jaws, and landed atop the broken pillars of the ruined temple.
Both of their faces twisted in fear, staring at me like I was some unstoppable threat.
“Oh, I see now. So this is the full power of this body…!”
I couldn’t care less about their fear.
“Mindless fools who’ve lost all reason. I should thank you.”
““!?””
A slight numbness ran through my legs.
Enhancing my body with extreme spiritual power, amplified further by [Blank Shot], finally sent some backlash through my system.
That last attack was strong enough to hurt me — so I guess that’s my current limit.
“Thanks for creating this canopy. This place is an alternate dimension, a type of ‘sealed realm.’ It let me go all out.”
And more importantly—
“Thanks for disrespecting my brother and losing yourself to your beastly urges. You made it so much easier for me to unleash violence.”
“Did you just call us trash?!”
Yeah, I did.
“You claim to reject your werewolf father, yet you drown yourself in his bloodlust during battle? That makes you lower than an animal.”
“W-What…?!”
“Stop fooling yourself with your fake pride. Right now, you’re nothing but a rabid dog.”
“Grrrr…!”
Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth.
He must’ve clenched his teeth too hard in frustration.
“My brother was different. He may be a jerk, but he fought with reason, planned his tactics, and faced me head-on. He wasn’t like a rabid dog that just bites out of blind rage…”
But you — you’ve ruined all of that.
A beast pretending to have reason. So—
“Fine by me. I’ll just enjoy hunting you down.”
“Fuck you!”
Rouga lunged at me again.
He planted his feet, ready to charge forward—
“Go eat Riru.”
“Eh? W-What?!”
Riru suddenly leapt in front of her brother.
She ended up flying right into his wide-open jaws.
“What the—?!”
Rouga froze in shock. That hesitation was all I needed.
“There you go, Rouga. A nice little snack for you.”
Before he could spit her out, I smashed his lower jaw upward with my case.
“Kyaaaahhh!!! B-Brother!!!”
“RIRUUUUU!!!”
The sister screamed in pain as her brother’s fangs pierced her, and Rouga’s face twisted in horror at what had just happened.
Then — gulp.
Rouga’s throat moved. He swallowed his sister’s blood.
“Ah…”
In the next instant — the bloodlust vanished from his eyes, replaced by clear, rational thought.
“AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”
His eyes filled with pure terror.
“Guh—! Bleeaaargh!?”
“When I used Seismic Stomp earlier, I sent out a [Doll] through the dust cloud using Curse Wielding. I had it possess your sister.”
“R-Riru… ughhh, gaaahhh—!”
Rouga gagged and vomited, spitting out Riru along with bile and blood.
—Enjoy it. This is payback for hurting my brother and making him suffer.
“Y-You… how could you…?!”
“Well now! This canopy is well-constructed. The core of this world isn’t the temple ruins — it’s probably that big red moon in the sky. Destroying it looks like it’ll be a pain.”
“W-What do you mean…?”
“I’m saying I can keep torturing you two for as long as I want.”
“?!”
As long as the moonlight shines, you’re invincible, right? Immortal, even? That’s incredible!
“So that means I can play with you all I want! What do you want to try next? Want another bite of your adorable little sister? Since you heal anyway, maybe we can go for something even worse!”
“N-No!!!”
How dare you, you worthless mutt, ruin my brother’s resolve.
How dare you, you worthless mutt, ruin my brother’s resolve.
How dare you, you worthless mutt, ruin my brother’s resolve.
How dare you, you worthless mutt, ruin my brother’s resolve.
“Come on, why don’t you let go of your reason again? You liked it, didn’t you?”
“Hiii!!”
“I’ll use you and your sister however I want… and have some fun of my own.”
“Ah… aahhh… aaahhh…?!”
The mutt started to back away.
What’s wrong now, huh? Regretting it?
“You said you’d ‘kill’ me.”
“!?”
“So don’t you dare run away.”
“!!”
That’s not something you say as a joke.
If you say it, you’d better be ready to back it up.
“Aaaahhh… AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”
Then a deafening howl filled the canopy.
It was Rouga.
His eyes, once filled with terror, had now turned blood-red with rage.
“Guh—GOROOOOZZZ!!!”
“B-Brother…?”
“I’LL KILL EVERYTHINGGGGG!!!”
I instinctively tugged the thread I had attached to Riru—just for fun.
“Kyaaah!?”
The moment I pulled her towards me, Rouga’s massive claws smashed the spot where she had been standing.
“Brother!?”
“I see. He’s really lost every shred of reason.”
“Eh…?”
Was it his way of escaping fear?
Or did the [Werewolf] instincts forcefully take over his weakened mind?
Either way, he’s completely abandoned his humanity now.
“AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”
And then, something monstrous happened.
Under the moonlight, his already massive body swelled even more, grotesquely expanding until he was as large as a small mountain. A shining ring appeared above his head — a divine halo.
“B-Brother’s… that’s a ‘Halo of Spiritual Light’?!”
“Yeah, it’s the mark of a high-level Conceptual Spirit.”
So, Rouga had an ace hidden at the bottom of his shallow pool of talent.
Judging by the stunned silence of Riru in my arms, even she didn’t know about this.
“W-Wait, Brother! I’ll dispel the canopy! If the moonlight disappears, Spirit Hosting’s Ascension will fade too!”
“No, don’t.”
I stopped her.
“Why?!”
“Look at the size of that thing. How long do you think it’ll take for the Ascension to wear off? —If we let that monster out into the real world, how much damage do you think it’ll cause?”
“!?”
Riru fell silent, her face going pale.
At least she still has some reason left.
“GRROOOAAAAARRR!!!”
Her brother, on the other hand, was growling, his eyes fixed on the moon. He howled like a true wolf now.
“Alright.”
Facing the enormous wolf, I made my decision.
“It seems this is the perfect time to use it.”
I raised the silver case high.
A weapon made from the legendary fantasy metal, [Hihiirokane] —
Something that didn’t exist in my first life.
