Chapter 10: Interlude – Setsuna Kirisame’s Interrogation
This takes place after everything has settled.
“—Lord Ouma, was this truly the right decision?”
In the office, First-Class Reisoushi Setsuna Kirisame questioned her master. Ouma turned to face her, replying, “Yes.”
“What is it, Setsuna? Are you referring to the postponement of Kanata Soranaki’s execution?”
“That as well, but no… that’s not what I meant.”
Setsuna retrieved a mobile device from her chest pocket and displayed a screen. It showed a news article titled “[Leaked!? Chaos at the Birth of the Monster Child]”.
“The internet is in an uproar. While I failed to notice, someone secretly filmed what happened at the scene.”
“I see.”
“The video has already spread far and wide. Deletion requests are futile at this point.”
“Indeed.”
“…Lord Ouma, you noticed it and let it happen, didn’t you?”
Setsuna narrowed her eyes slightly.
Ouma Shiranui was a man who would use any means necessary to benefit Japan.
While most citizens revered him with near-religious fervor, Setsuna was different.
“Knowing you, this was ultimately a decision to serve Japan’s interests. But in doing so, you’ve once again stirred up chaos.”
“What are you implying?”
“I’m saying that you, Lord Ouma, cannot be trusted.”
Setsuna’s declaration was firm and absolute.
As a daughter of the prestigious Kirisame family, her father had warned her: “The Supreme Commander Shiranui is a madman. Don’t trust him too much.”
From the start, she had regarded Ouma with skepticism.
“I respect you, Lord Ouma. However, I can’t look at you blindly.”
Because of this attitude, Setsuna often voiced her dissent clearly, even when it meant facing criticism from those who idolized Ouma. And Ouma, in turn, valued her for it.
“Hm… a reasonable stance.”
“Sigh… So, Commander, why did you allow the footage to be leaked? The upper ranks of the Knights of Libertaria strictly forbade publicizing the incident…”
To this, Ouma replied succinctly, “That’s precisely why.”
“To show the world the monster born in Japan…?”
Ouma nodded. His gaze hardened, filled with quiet yet burning resolve as he stared into the distance.
“The Holy Libertarian Empire. The world’s strongest superpower and the one that defeated Japan in the ‘Second Spirit Eradication War’ thirty years ago. Now, the upper echelons of global authority are dominated by Libertaria and its puppet states.”
Even the Spirit Conductor Agency wasn’t immune to this hierarchy.
It functioned under the guise of a partnership with Libertaria’s Spirit Knights, though in reality, it was a subordinate relationship. Major decisions required approval from the Knights.
“I see… So it’s a move to intimidate an enemy state?”
“Exactly. Japan is small and lacks national power. That’s why we lost the last war. If we are to compete, we must leverage the presence of extraordinary individuals to the fullest extent.”
“So that’s why you’re keeping that monster under your control…”
Setsuna reflected on her impressions of Kanata Soranaki.
His expression was unnervingly blank, cold enough to send chills down her spine. Combined with his breathtaking beauty, it was hard to believe he was even alive.
But the moment his expression changed, he would flash a sinister, almost tearing grin, and his gaze burned with such malice it felt suffocating.
“S-So terrifying…!”
Even just remembering it made her body tremble. Such a dangerous creature should be eliminated. Surely, his inner self was a chaotic vortex of greed and murderous intent—or so Setsuna believed.
(Reality couldn’t have been further from the truth.)
“Sigh… In any case, I understand. As a means of intimidation, that footage was certainly effective. It not only showcased the existence of a terrifying monster but also demonstrated that the great Ouma Shiranui had it firmly under control.”
This would undoubtedly instill not only fear of Kanata in enemy nations but also deepen their respect—and fear—of Ouma, who had managed to leash such a demon hound.
“By the way, what would you have done if that monster had rebelled against you?”
“Killed it, of course. Whether through subjugation or slaughter, I would’ve ensured the world saw me as superior.”
“Uwaa.”
“No matter how things turned out, I intended to use Soranaki for Japan’s benefit until there was nothing left.”
“Uwaaah.”
This is why Ouma Shiranui is terrifying.
Setsuna realized this once again and firmly resolved never to be overwhelmed by him.
Even if he had destroyed countless underground foreign organizations that exploited Japan, dramatically improving the economy…
Even if he had cut down innumerable Conceptual Spirits and trained just as many Reisoushis…
Even if he had vowed a lifetime of celibacy, forsaking friendship and love to dedicate himself entirely to Japan’s prosperity…
“Thirty years ago—on the day everything I had was burned away in the flames of war, I swore: no matter the cost, I would turn my homeland into a dominant power and honor the lives that were taken.”
“…I see.”
This man, this relentless force, could never be trusted.
Until the day some miraculous “someone” might change him—if such a day ever came—Setsuna Kirisame resolved to continue disliking him.
“By the way, if you knew the incident was being filmed, what about that statement? You know, when you told Kanata Soranaki, ‘Become my tool’?”
“Hm?”
“Thanks to that, the internet is going wild. You both make for a striking visual pair, after all.”
“Hmm? I simply meant the words as they were—I ordered him to obey me. Why would that cause an uproar?”
“Sigh… Really?”

[Tips]
Holy Libertarian Empire:
A revolutionary faction founded this massive empire, with America as its origin.
By the year 2030 of the Sacred Calendar, it has secured its place as the dominant global superpower.
Second Spirit Eradication War:
Thirty years ago, this war broke out when Libertaria, leading the Western powers, launched a large-scale invasion of the Greater East Asia region.
Many Reisoushis were deployed to defend their homeland and lost their lives in the process.
Spirit Conductor Knights:
Libertaria’s equivalent of the Spirit Conductor Agency.
In Libertaria, Reisoushis are referred to as Spirit Conductor Knights.
Unlike the black cloaks worn by the Spirit Conductor Agency, they are characterized by their white cloaks.
Setsuna Kirisame:
The blue-haired woman. Keeps her guard up around Ouma and is well-versed in internet trends.
Ouma Shiranui:
A relentless warrior who has dedicated everything to his homeland. The strongest.
Rarely checks the internet (always working or training). A bit naive at times.
Kanata Soranaki:
Clueless. Just a mob at heart but somehow heavily guarded against…!
