Chapter 38: Because I Want to Get Along

I was surprised when Lena and Kia suddenly appeared in human form. 

Runa arrived soon after, and we all moved to the temple area where Runa listened to their story. 

Despite Runa’s presence, it seemed Lena and Kia’s ability to transform into humans was still immature, and they had returned to their original black dragon forms by the time we arrived at the temple.

“I see, I understand now.”

“What does that mean?”

I was confused about whether to refer to them as two people or two animals.

Runa finished listening to their story and explained to us. 

“To be precise, it’s not exactly a transformation. You know that dragons can use magic, right, Xeno?”

“Ah… Wait, could it be Lena and Kia’s magic?”

“That’s right,” 

When Runa affirmed it, Lena and Kia, who were standing behind her, also nodded.

When I asked for more details, Runa explained that it was not a pure human transformation like hers, so they could not speak well and could not maintain their human form for long. 

Nevertheless, even though magic was wrapped in mystery, it was unexpected for Runa that they were able to enter the realm of forcibly taking human form.

“Dragons discover many possibilities through their affinity with humans. These two had some affinity with Xeno, and they seemed to envy me for being close to you.”

“Is that so?” 

“Even though it was difficult for them, they thought they could get along better if they became human… They don’t have any romantic feelings for you, Xeno. They just wanted to get along with you more by taking on human form.”

As someone who loves dragons, it was a great honor. Lena and Kia were once two of the troublesome dragons, but it was really heartwarming that they thought of me in this way.

I can’t communicate with them as perfectly as Runa does, so it would be nice to be able to communicate in various ways if they could actually speak when they transform into a human, but it seems that it’s difficult to go that far.

“Oh, and when I said that they didn’t have romantic feelings for you, I wasn’t lying. I didn’t threaten them or anything, okay?”

“I know. Besides, they’re tilting their heads like they don’t understand what romantic feelings mean.”

Lena and Kia tilted their heads, apparently not understanding what romantic feelings mean. 

However, Runa has made it clear that becoming human should not be shown to others, no matter what form it takes, and she has only revealed herself as a human in front of me.

“Is it okay if it’s in front of me?”

“Yes. Although I don’t want any lovey-dovey stuff happening, I do want to acknowledge that they tried their best to take human form to become friends with you. I used to think these kids were childish and dumb, but I was wrong.”

“Are you exaggerating?”

“It’s fine. You thought so too, didn’t you?”

… No comment.

It’s true that at first, it felt like I was dealing with two childrens or troublemakers. 

I later became good friends with these girls as I got to know them by heart… Well, I’m glad that Lena and Kia felt the same way about me.

“… But it might be a good idea.”

“What do you mean?”

Having thought of something, Runa continued speaking.

“If these two were able to take on human form, even if it’s in that form, and if they could extend the duration of the transformation, it would be perfect for you to have them as your guards. Originally, Lena and Kia were supposed to return to you, you know.”

“Really!?”

That’s news to me.

I was surprised to hear that things had been happening without my knowledge, and even though nobody else knows about it, I still don’t know what might happen in the future.

In the midst of all this, I’ve been told that Lena and Kia will be by my side to ensure that nothing happens to me, as I am the caretaker of Runa, the Dragon Queen.

“… Hah~.”

“Well, it’s just a normal consideration since you’re going to be the queen’s husband. It’s known that there are forces that target dragon handlers, not just dragons. So they will also be by your side considering that.”

“… I understand.”

“Of course, we’ll still be alone together to lovey-dovey as usual, okay?”

Ah, I won’t back down on that.

Lena and Kia looked dissatisfied with Runa’s words, but when Runa noticed that, she stomped the ground a little harder, causing it to shake as if a fissure had opened up.

Just that was enough to make Lena and Kia shrink back, and it was clear how terrifying Runa was to them, even as dragons.

“Lena, Kia. Can I count on you again?”

As I conveyed my message, they immediately smiled and looked up. They leaped towards me, pushing Runa aside, and since I couldn’t withstand being approached by two dragons, I was pushed down as a result.

“It’s like having two princess knights protecting the queen’s husband. While not as strong as me, Lena and Kia are particularly strong among the dragons.”

Indeed, I thought, as I stroked the heads of the two dragons.

And so, little by little, the changes surrounding Runa and me began to take shape… and finally, the day of our wedding arrived.
