- Chapter 25: Saturday At Sunset.
Saturday At Sunset.
In the evening, on the way home from the station to Yomogi’s house
The shadows of Yomogi and me, carrying Nazuna on my back, stretched side by side in the orange light of dusk.
“She’s not heavy right, if she is, you can give her to me.”
After waking up from her nap, Nazuna-chan was so excited that it was as if her batteries were fully charged, and on the way home, she fell asleep as if her batteries were dead, again.
The stuffed giraffe that I bought for Nazuna-chan and she adored so much on the way home was now being held by Yomogi.
“Not at all. I was exercising a lot for a ball game a while ago. I can carry her.”
“I only got to see the final, but it was cool.”
“Thank you. What did you play?”
“…Table tennis.”
“…Oh, yes. Table tennis.”
Soccer and basketball for the boys, and volleyball and table tennis for the girls, as I remembered.
Table tennis is a ball game, too.
I wanted to win the first round and then… lose on purpose so I could go cheer on my team.
“I would have rather watched you playing table tennis, though.”
Yomogi, who played the ball back and forth with no expression on her face, must have felt a lot of pressure from her opponent.
As we were talking about this, we arrived at the front door of her house.
Yomogi picked up Nazuna who was sleeping on my back at the entrance.
“Thank you for today.”
“Yeah, I had a good time, and I’m guessing… Nazuna-chan had a good time too?”
“Yeah, she was having so much fun. It’s not often I see her having that much fun.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
I smiled.
“Same for me, I also had a lot of fun.”
And then Yomogi smiled, too.
“So I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah, see you.”
I left before dark, so it was still early.
I thought about stopping somewhere, but then I remembered the lunchtime conversation I had with Yomogi.
“I love you.”
When she said that to me.
I could not even think or move my body as if I was in chains.
Would I be in love with… someone else?
When this idea became a reality with her confession, something inside of me whispered,
Will… she cheat on me again?
Yomogi, who should have been unaware of my inner thoughts, seemed to have more to say and began to speak slowly.
Every word of what she was saying was conveyed to me.
“But…
I know you can’t think about that kind of thing yet, Umi.
That’s why, I’m waiting until you are ready to move on.
And then, I want you to talk to me. I want you to think about me.
If there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know, okay?”
Saying this, Yomogi smiled.
I think I’m starting to get my thoughts together a little bit.
Tomorrow, I will talk to Ayaka and come up with my own answer.
I made up my mind and took out my phone to call Ayaka, and a call came in.
Marin?
“Hello, Marin? what’s wrong?”
“Brother! Come to the general hospital in front of the station right away!”
