I became the boyfriend of the school's madonna, who had turned down numerous confessions, but somehow, without realizing it, I wasn't just playing a role anymore - Chapter 123
Episode 123: Love Is Blind
“Misaki wouldn’t confuse fiction with reality, right?”
She’s not the type to get into otaku culture, and I’ve never seen her read manga or watch anime when she’s with me.
She’s usually either playing with Kokoa or being affectionate towards me.
“Well, that may be true, but in general, childhood friends are the losing heroines.”
“Huh? Well… is that how it usually goes?”
I’m not really sure what’s considered “general”.
But if Suzumine-san says so, then I guess it must be true.
“Anyway, I get that I need to do something about Misaki, and I realize now that I have to stop her before it gets out of hand.”
Otherwise, I can see myself facing a nightmare when summer break ends—or worse, rumors spreading that aren’t even true.
“Oh, and one more warning.”
“Warning…?”
Why does that sound so ominous?
“This might actually be the main point. You realize that Misaki is acting overly giddy, don’t you?”
“Well, yeah, I mean, we’re together every day…”
“Since I know how excited she is, I think you can guess, but she’s probably like that at home too. And while it wasn’t as bad, Misora-san was the same way when she first started dating her late husband.”
“……”
I understood exactly what Suzumine-san was getting at, and a cold sweat ran down my back.
Just as Sasagawa-sensei saw some of herself in Misaki, it seems current Misaki resembles how Misora-san used to be.
In other words, anyone who knew Sasagawa-sensei back then could probably tell that Misaki has a boyfriend now.
“The issue is, Misaki’s dad became overly opposed to her dating after what happened with Misora-san. I’m guessing Misaki’s been telling him she’s going to visit either Misora-san’s place or mine, but in reality, she’s going to your house—and there’s a good chance he’s already noticed.”
Her warning gave me a headache.
The fact that Suzumine-san was calling me meant that Misaki had been allowed to carry on so far, but now the situation was becoming critical.
“Misaki hasn’t mentioned anything about being confronted…”
If her dad is that strict about her dating, even if he was letting things slide, I would’ve expected him to at least make some comments.
And if that were the case, Misaki would probably show some signs of being worried…
“You know the saying, “love is blind,” right?”
Suzumine-san gave a wry laugh as she replied.
I guess what she meant was that Misaki is so caught up in her feelings that she isn’t noticing what’s happening around her.
Even if her dad has said something, it seems she hasn’t realized it.
I messed up… I should’ve paid more attention to her situation.
“Do you think he’ll confront her about it?”
“Tomorrow’s Saturday, and her dad’s off work.”
“I see… Well, I would’ve appreciated it if you’d told me a bit sooner…”
“I’m just an outsider, you know.”
Although she’s Misaki’s childhood friend and closest confidante, she’s not directly involved in what’s going on between Misaki and me.
So, she had been keeping her distance until the last possible moment.
“There might also be a bit of payback involved.”
“…Payback? For what?”
“It doesn’t feel great to have someone treat you with such open suspicion.”
I see… Misaki must’ve been fiercely guarding me from Suzumine-san.
She really is like a loyal dog…
She’s such a kind and thoughtful girl, though…
“Sorry if she made you uncomfortable.”
Since she’s my girlfriend, it’s my responsibility to apologize if she’s caused any trouble.
With that thought in mind, I offered my apology, but Suzumine-san just chuckled softly.
“It’s fine, we’re childhood friends, after all.
I wasn’t sure if she meant her or me, but her voice had become gentler, so it seemed she wasn’t upset.
“Thanks for the warning, too.”
“Hehe… well, if it helped repay a little debt, then I’m glad.”
“What are you talking about…?”
“Nothing, goodnight.”
With that, Suzumine-san hung up, sounding quite pleased with herself.
It was clear she had deliberately avoided my question, probably not wanting me to press further.
Although her words lingered in my mind, I had to focus on the immediate problem at hand.
“—Time to act fast…”
If Misaki’s father is waiting for the right moment, then it’s better to disrupt his timing and take control of the situation ourselves.
With that in mind, I quickly reached out to Misaki.
