Chapter 33 – Unbearable Injustice
Miyama-sensei was dead serious. I couldn’t imagine her making such a twisted joke, and my blood ran cold.
“M-mistress? How old do you think Sakurada is compared to that old man…?”
“Men with that kind of ambition never lose their desires, no matter how old they get. It’s not public knowledge, but it’s not unusual for a politician his age to have one or two mistresses.”
“One or two mistresses? This is the Reiwa era! Society wouldn’t tolerate that…”
“Society won’t tolerate it if it becomes public. But if the public doesn’t know, then it’s not a problem. The girls at his second home are just maids, after all. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors.”
“……”
I was speechless.
I have never been in a situation where that word fit so perfectly.
Anger? Fear? Contempt? I can’t pinpoint the exact emotion swirling in my head, and I can’t even find the words to express it.
But I can’t end the conversation there. I have to force the words out.
“So, Sakurada is just going to be an outlet for that old man’s lust?”
“Congressman Mifune is known for being a womanizer. But in this case, it’s more likely that Minister Sakurada offered her up to Congressman Mifune as a gift. She’s a cute girl, so she’s apparently well-known among the politicians.”
“What?! Her own father offered his daughter as a mistress to that old man?! That’s impossible!”
I couldn’t control my emotions. My voice rose, and Miyama-sensei covered her ears.
“Ryuuki-kun, your voice is too loud… And you’re a little scary right now…”
Her words snapped me back to reality.
“S-sorry… I…I just…”
“I think it’s a disgusting situation, too. But when you consider her background, it’s easy to imagine her father treating her like a pawn.”
“Her background…?”
“Huh? You really don’t know?”
Miyama-sensei’s eyes widened in surprise.
Huh? What about her background…? Wasn’t Sakurada born and raised as a member of the Sakurada family?
“Do you remember an idol named Anzu Yuzuki?”
Anzu Yuzuki…? I vaguely remembered the name. Oh, yeah… I used to see her on TV when I was a kid…
“Ah! I remember!”
A shocking memory came back to me.
“Sakurada looks like that idol! She really does!”
That’s right. I had thought the same thing when I was staring at Sakurada’s face on the roof that day.
I thought her face looked a lot like an idol I used to watch as a kid.
I had completely forgotten the idol’s name because I wasn’t a fan, but now I remembered. A chill I had never felt before ran down my spine.
Miyama-sensei stared at me and voiced the worst-case scenario that had just popped into my head.
“She suddenly retired from the entertainment industry the year before Sakurada-san was born. After that, Sakurada-san was born as a child of the Sakurada family. Minister Sakurada insists she’s the child of him and his wife, but no one believes that.”
“So, that means…”
“Do I need to spell it out for you?”
“…No, I think I get it now.”
It was so far from my world that I couldn’t accept it as reality.
“As the news said, Minister Sakurada is aiming for the party leadership election next year. Gaining the support of the Mifune faction would be a huge advantage for him.”
“……”
“The world of politics isn’t so simple that you can just ask for support and get it. Of course, if Minister Sakurada becomes the party leader, several ministers from the Mifune faction will be appointed to positions. But other candidates want the support of the Mifune faction, too. So, Minister Sakurada probably offered up his young, beautiful daughter as a gift.”
“That’s unbelievable… It can’t be true…”
This world is so messed up.
I couldn’t help but feel that naive anger.
How can something like this happen? What did Sakurada even do to deserve this?
This is modern Japan! How can a girl’s feelings be trampled on like this?!
Unconsciously, I stood up. I didn’t know what I was going to do. But I couldn’t just sit there and do nothing after hearing all of this.
I found myself walking toward the door, still in my clothes… but then…
“Ryuuki-kun, where are you going?”
Miyama-sensei said, grabbing my arm. Her grip was so strong that her nails were digging into my wrist as she glared at me.
“Where? I can’t just go on with my life as a teacher when one of my students is going through something like this.”
At the very least, I can’t just do nothing.
“Even so, there’s nothing you can do.”
“Even if there isn’t, I have to try…”
“Then what are you going to do?”
“I’ll… I’ll go to the Sakurada family and try to talk them out of it.”
“It’s pointless.”
“How do you know if you don’t try?”
“It’s pointless. They won’t even listen to you. Do you really think anyone would admit to Congressman Mifune having a mistress? Even if you leaked it to the reporters, no one would publish a story about it. And Ryuuki-kun, if you do that, you’ll lose your job as a teacher, you know?”
Lose my job…?
That’s fine by me.
The teacher I dreamed of becoming wouldn’t just stand by while a student’s dignity was being crushed.
I tried to pull my arm away, realizing Miyama-sensei let me go easily, but then she slapped my cheek hard.
“What was that for?!”
“Ryuuki-kun, snap out of it. Losing your job is still the best-case scenario. You could get thrown in jail, or something even more tragic could happen.”
She then wrapped her hands around mine.
“Ryuuki-kun, I’m just as mad about what’s happening to Sakurada-san as you are. But I can’t let your life be ruined because of her. Ryuuki-kun, you have to value yourself more.”
“……”
What am I supposed to do…?
I can’t process the helpless feeling inside me, but I know I can’t cause any more trouble for Miyama-sensei. And I also know that acting on my emotions wouldn’t make things better.
“I-I’m sorry…”
I apologized to her and slowly sat back down on the sofa, biting my lip.
