Chapter 31 – This Uneasiness in My Heart
What in the world is going on with Sakurada?
A little part of me worried about it, but as the week changed, I almost forgot all about it. That is, until a normal weekday morning.
I was teaching English in class 2-B like any other day when the door suddenly opened and two men in suits walked in.
“Huh?”
I stopped writing a sentence on the board, my hand freezing in place.
Who are they? I wondered for a second, but I recognized one of them right away.
It was Miyashita-san, the bodyguard who’d followed me on that ‘forced date’ with Sakurada a while back. He looked tough, but he was a super polite guy who had left a great impression on me.
The other guy was a complete stranger. He was in a suit, probably in his late 50s or early 60s, with a smug look on his face and a well-fed physique.
It’s not right to judge someone by their looks, but this guy gave off a bad vibe as he stood in the back of the classroom, staring at the students.
I was completely dumbfounded by the unexpected visit when Miyashita-san walked up to me.
“Sensei, it’s been a while. I’m Miyashita.”
“Oh, hello… but what brings you here?”
“Congressman Mifune is here to inspect Seiou Private Academy today. We’ve already been granted permission by the academy. We won’t interrupt your class at all, so please continue as if we’re not here.”
Miyashita said this and gave me a deep bow, hunching his broad shoulders in a way that seemed impossible for a guy his size.
He’s as humble as ever…
I couldn’t really say no, so I just told him, “Please, feel free to look around,” and went back to teaching.
I tried to ignore them, but having two guys in suits in a room full of girls was just plain weird. Even worse, the older guy kept staring at Sakurada, and she seemed to notice, looking really uncomfortable.
What’s with this “inspection” anyway? I couldn’t wrap my head around why a national politician would come all the way out to this school for rich girls.
And hey… I feel like I’ve seen this Mifune guy somewhere before…
I kept looking at the creepy old man staring at Sakurada when it suddenly clicked.
“Ah!”
The sound just slipped out, and the students all looked at me with puzzled faces.
“Huh? Oh, sorry… Don’t mind it…”
I said, apologizing, but I was certain.
This Mifune guy is the man from the photo I saw in Sakurada’s room. It was in a fancy frame, like a marriage photo, so it was stuck in my mind.
Could it be… was it really a marriage photo…? I considered it for a second, but with that huge age gap, I thought there was no way it’d be a marriage arrangement.
So why the heck is he here in the middle of the mountains?
I couldn’t figure out why this guy was here. All I knew was that Sakurada wasn’t happy about him being here.
I’m sorry, Miyashita-san, but I wish you would both leave right now…
Just as I was thinking that, Sakurada raised her hand.
“Sensei.”
“Hmm? Sakurada… What is it?”
“Sensei, I’d like to step outside for a smoke.” (T/N: Huh? What?!)
“What?! Hey, Sakurada!”
Wait, what is she saying? Did I just hear her say something about smoking…?
No, that can’t be right. It must be a mistake.
“Sensei, did you not hear me? I’m going outside to smoke.”
I hadn’t misheard. She just got up and walked out of the classroom, leaving me and the other students completely stunned.
What’s going on…?
The classroom was in a frenzy. Miyashita-san was the first one to rush out after her.
Seeing him go snapped me back to reality. Something is seriously wrong.
“Sorry, I’ll be gone for a bit. Please hand out these quizzes and get started on them.”
I said, handing the papers to a student in the front row before running out of the classroom myself.
I feel bad for leaving the class, but I can’t just ignore a student who just said she’s going out for a smoke.
I chased after Sakurada and Miyashita-san.
When I got to the stair landing, I saw Miyashita-san grabbing Sakurada’s arm.
“Momo-sama, what are you thinking?!”
“Let go of me! I’m going to…!”
“You’ve never smoked a cigarette in your life! I understand you want to make a bad impression on Congressman Mifune, but all you’re doing is making things worse for yourself!”
“Let go of me!”
I rushed over to them.
“Sakurada, what’s going on?”
She looked at me with a sad expression and then quickly turned away.
“I just said it, didn’t I? I’m going to smoke.”
“I don’t believe you’d be the type of student to smoke.”
“That just shows how little you know about me, Sensei. I’m a bad girl who secretly smokes.”
This is going nowhere. So I turned to Miyashita-san instead.
“Miyashita-san, what’s happening?”
He looked at me for a moment and then quickly looked away.
“Hosokawa-sensei, this is a family matter for the Sakurada family. I appreciate your concern, but please don’t get involved.”
“……”
Huh, a “family matter”…?
“Miyashita-san, I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m her homeroom teacher. Can you please tell me what’s wrong?”
I asked again. Miyashita-san looked like he was struggling, but he quickly looked away and said in a small voice, “I… I can’t do that…”
Then, Sakurada spoke up.
“Sensei, this has nothing to do with you. Please go back to the classroom.”
“But…”
“This isn’t a problem you can solve. Please just go back to the classroom.”
“……”
Neither Miyashita-san nor Sakurada seemed to be willing to tell me what was going on.
I am worried about Sakurada, but when both of them told me to stay out of it, there’s not much I can do. Plus, Miyashita-san probably knows her better than I do .
I guess I have no choice but to back off.
“F-fine… But remember that you’re still my student. Don’t you ever forget that.”
I said this, holding back my frustration.
Miyashita-san just bowed his head.
“I thank you for your understanding, Hosokawa-sensei. I will do everything in my power for Momo-sama, so please place your trust in me.”
“Yeah…”
With a heavy heart, I turned my back on them and went back to the classroom.
