- Chapter 75: The Former Introvert's Patience Drags On.
The Former Introvert’s Patience Drags On.
The next day, we dove into our summer vacation homework from the morning.
With Mayuki keeping a light watch while studying for entrance exams, Hatsune-san and I concentrated on finishing our assignments. By evening, we had completed all our homework.
Later, as we shared dinner with Hatsune-san at the Ueno household, it was already dark outside.
“Thank you for everything! Your cooking was delicious, Mother!”
Currently, at the entrance, my mother and sister were seeing Hatsune-san off as she prepared to head home.
“Fufuu~, you’re quite the charmer. And Hatsune-san, thank you for taking care of Yakumo and Mayuki.”
My mother seemed in a good mood after being praised.
“Yakumo, don’t let Hatsune-san get away!”
“Could you not say that so openly in front of her…?”
It was kind of embarrassing.
“Don’t worry; I have no intention of letting Yakumo-kun slip away!”
“Oh my, it seems like the day when I gain another daughter isn’t too far off!”
Hatsune-san and my mother were completely in sync.
Wait a minute.
Am I being gradually cornered here?
“Hatsune-san, please don’t go yet… I’ll miss you once the training camp is over.”
Next to me, Mayuki was snuggling up to Hatsune-san, seeking comfort.
“There, there, Mayuki-chan, you’re so cute… But I agree; I’ll miss you too.”
In the end, nothing happened between Hatsune-san and me during the training camp.
It’s tough to take things further with family around, and that’s part of the reason we chose this location for the camp.
We managed to finish all our summer homework in one go, which was the goal.
Still, I felt a bit unsatisfied.
“Hatsune-san, why not stay over again tonight?”
“I want to, but… hmm.”
Hatsune-san made a contemplative sound in response to Mayuki’s pouting.
As I watched them both with a lingering sense of frustration, Hatsune-san met my gaze.
“…I guess you feel the same, Yakumo-kun.”
“What do you mean, Hatsune-san?”
Mayuki tilted her head, looking at Hatsune-san, who had murmured something under her breath.
“I’m sorry, Mayuki-chan, but I think I’ll head home because I have something I want to do.”
“Eh?”
“Sorry, Mayuki-chan, let’s play together next time?”
“…It’s a promise.”
“Yeah, a promise.”
Hatsune-san reassured Mayuki, who finally released her grip.
“Well then, I should be going now. Yakumo-kun… you’ll walk me home, right?”
“…Of course.”
I accepted Hatsune-san’s invitation.
On the way from the Ueno household to the nearest station, Hatsune-san and I walked side by side.
“Hmm, that was a really productive training camp. I had fun spending time with Mayuki-chan, and we got a lot of studying done. Now I can enjoy the last few days of summer vacation without any worries.”
That’s right. Like Hatsune-san said, we still had a few days of summer break left.
“We might even have time to go out somewhere. I should start planning.”
“Going out sounds fun, but, you know…”
“Huh?”
There was something odd about the way Hatsune-san was acting.
“It’s still so hot, so… how about we just stay inside, in a cool room, the two of us?”
“I see…”
Being alone in a room with Hatsune-san… She didn’t say it outright, but I could tell what she was suggesting.
“…Yeah, that could work.”
“In that case, Yakumo-kun… you still have some time today, right?”
Hatsune-san gently squeezed my hand. It seemed like we’d both been feeling the same way during the camp.
“Of course I—”
Just as I was about to nod, my phone buzzed with a notification. It was a message from Diona. I paused and pulled out my phone to check it.
‘We’ve found the person you were looking for. Come alone.’
The person I had asked Diona to find was none other than Hatsune-san’s parents. But from the tone of the message, it didn’t seem like this was going to be a straightforward reunion.
“Come alone,” it said. I had a feeling this wasn’t something I should share with Hatsune-san, at least not yet.
“Sorry, something urgent just came up.”
“Oh, really? Well… that can’t be helped, then.”
Hatsune-san’s disappointment was pretty clear in her voice and expression.

After escorting Hatsune-san to the station, I headed to a nearby park.
There, sitting on a shadowy bench, was Diona, the witch from another world and an informant.
“Yo, Yakumo, it’s been a while.”
“Yeah, for Diona, this sure took some time.”
“What, already throwing jabs as soon as we meet?”
“I didn’t mean it that way. I’m just bracing myself for whatever troublesome situation you’ve dug up.”
Diona, who traverses between worlds, knows not only the secret information of nations and corporations but also deeply personal details no one else could possibly know. Despite being such a powerful, supernatural entity, it took her over a month to locate just two people. That delay was unusual, to say the least.
“Let’s get to the point. As I told you, I’ve found the whereabouts and condition of Hatsune-san Ichigaya’s parents.”
“Where are they now?”
“You need to save the other world again.”
Her response was vague and didn’t quite answer my question.
“That’s quite a leap in the conversation.”
“Hatsune-san Ichigaya’s parents have been sealed and used as a source of magical energy by the Dragon King Volcanius.”
A name I hadn’t heard before.
“So, he’s the new big bad in that world, huh? I thought I’d already taken care of all the top-level threats.”
“He’s a newcomer who’s been rapidly gaining power. The reason it took me so long to find them was because he cleverly concealed the location of the humans he’s using as his magical source.”
Diona spoke with bitterness. For something to elude her for this long, the Dragon King must be no ordinary foe.
“…It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve talked about other-worldly fantasy stuff like this.”
Since that day on the school rooftop when I first spoke to Hatsune-san, so much has happened. Still, it’s only been a few months since I returned to this world from the other one. Over there, I’ve dealt with countless threats—Demon Kings, giant dragons, undead armies—and eventually brought peace to that world. Even though time flows differently between the worlds, having another threat emerge so soon feels far too fast.
“So, do you get the gist of the situation?”
“To save Hatsune-san’s parents, I have to take down this Dragon King, right?”
In other words, I’m being asked to save that world once again.
“I got it. I’ll go. Back to the other world.”
“I’m surprised at how quickly you answered. I thought you hated being used for someone else’s gain.”
It’s true. I might once again end up fighting for the convenience of Diona or the people of the other world. But—
“This time, it’s for Hatsune-san. There’s no reason for me to hesitate.”
“Well, that makes things easier for me.”
The way she said that… maybe Diona’s getting some kind of reward for sending me back to the other world.
“So, how long do you think it’ll take to bring Hatsune-san’s parents back?”
“That’s up to you. But don’t worry, like last time, I’ll adjust things. You won’t come back to find that years have passed in this world.”
“I still don’t fully understand how that works.”
Most likely, after spending some time in the other world, I’ll return here, only a few days or weeks later. But in that case, what about Hatsune-san’s parents? It’s been eight years since they disappeared from this world. How much time will have passed for them by the time they return?
“Well, don’t think too hard about it. Just do what you need to do, and everything will work out.”
Diona brushed off my concerns like they were nothing. Honestly, I still don’t know what she really is. Not that she’d tell me if I asked.
“Alright, let’s go now. The sooner I deal with this, the better.”
“I’m all for it, but… don’t you need to explain things to your girlfriend or family?”
Unlike last time, I’m choosing to go to the other world on my own. So, I do have time to say my goodbyes or let them know. But how do I explain it? I’ll need a good excuse for being gone for a few days. Maybe something like, “I’m going on a journey of self-discovery for a while.”
They’ll probably see through it right away, though.
“Alright, I’ve sent the message.”
My family still doesn’t know the real reason I disappeared during spring break.
That’s why they’ve been overly protective since. Hatsune-san knows I came back from another world, but saying something like “I’m off to defeat the Dragon King” would only worry her more. No matter what I say, they’re going to be concerned—I get that, and I feel bad about it. But that’s not a reason to avoid saving Hatsune-san’s parents.
“One last piece of advice… once you go and return, there likely won’t be a ‘next time.’”
Diona’s words carried an ominous tone.
“Well, as long as I can make it back, that’s good enough,” I replied, but a thought crossed my mind.
I had planned to wait until after finishing my summer homework… but it looks like this will take a little longer than expected.
August 28th.
Ueno Yakumo went missing for the second time since spring break.
