The Most Beautiful Girl In High School Finds Taking First Place In Tests To Be A Piece Of Cake.
At Dusk.
I was walking with Hatsune-san from my house to the station.
We passed through a residential area and emerged onto the main street.
“Thank you for spending time with Mayuki today,” I said.
“No, it’s more that meeting Mayuki-chan and going to your room was my main goal, so I’m quite satisfied,” she replied, a smile brightening her face as she added, “Plus, I got Mayuki-chan’s contact information.”
“If you’re satisfied, that’s great, but… you didn’t get distracted from your own studies while helping Mayuki, did you?” I asked.
“I’m more than prepared for my own test studies!” she exclaimed.
“As expected from you, Hatsune-san… a top student like you is on a different level,” I acknowledged.
Lately, I felt like I had managed to create more time for studying, and my concentration had improved, especially since I had been holding back on various things.
“Fuufuuu~, I’m flattered, but I intend to maintain my position as the top student next time as well,” she said, a hint of pride in her voice.
As we chatted, we passed by a park near the station. A certain sight caught my eye.
A small girl, likely no older than a kindergartener, was trying to cross the street alone at a crosswalk that lacked a traffic signal, positioned at the entrance of the park.
This street had quite a bit of vehicular traffic.
Even now, a medium-sized truck was barreling toward the crosswalk without slowing down.
“This is bad…!”
From the height of the truck’s driver, it likely couldn’t see the small girl.
Despite her being mere steps away from the crosswalk, there was no sign it intended to stop.
If things continued as they were, a tragic accident would occur.
There was nearly twenty meters between the girl and me.
The truck had already passed right next to me.
(This isn’t the time to worry about appearances…!)
With Hatsune-san right beside me, and there might be others watching, but that was the least of my concerns.
I unleashed the superhuman physical abilities I had gained in another world and instantly moved in front of the girl.
I scooped her up and retreated to the sidewalk.
Just then, the truck sped by, right where the girl had been moments ago.
“Phew… Are you okay?” I asked as I set the girl down on the sidewalk, crouching down to speak with her.
“Yeah…”
The girl nodded while looking at me with a hint of caution.
“Hey, Yakumo-kun. I thought I saw a girl almost getting hit by a truck, and then you suddenly disappeared. When I noticed, you were on the sidewalk with her. Did you, like, save her in an instant?”
Hatsune-san arrived a bit late, her expression filled with curiosity as she observed me and the girl.
“Uh, something like that,” I replied.
“It wouldn’t be possible unless you moved faster than the truck, right?”
“Well, I’ve been training. Plus, the truck might have been slowing down more than I thought,” I said, struggling to justify myself.
“Hmm?”
Hatsune-san looked down at me, still crouched, with a skeptical expression. But she quickly turned her gaze back to the girl.
“Anyway, right now it’s more important to focus on this girl than on you, Yakumo-kun. Are your dad or mom with you?”
Hatsune-san crouched down to meet the girl’s eye level and spoke gently.
“My dad and mom got lost…”
“I see, that sounds troublesome.”
Hatsune-san chuckled softly. It seemed this little girl was indeed lost.
“What should we do, Yakumo-kun?” she asked.
“For now, let’s try to find this girl’s parents in the park,” I suggested.
As I said this, I had already spotted a pair who looked like the girl’s parents.
I had used one of my cheat skills, clairvoyance, to see them. Since the girl had appeared to come from the park, I activated the skill to find a couple in their early thirties searching the area.
It seemed she had wandered outside while playing in the park, losing sight of her parents.
Anyway, Hatsune-san and I decided to take the girl with us toward the park.
“Can you tell us your name?” I asked.
“Shizuku.”
“Got it, Shizuku-chan. So, let’s go together and find your dad and mom.”
Hatsune-san said this and extended her hand to the girl.
“…Okay.”
The girl timidly took Hatsune-san’s hand.
“Alright, let’s find this girl’s parents before it gets dark…”
Just as I was about to say that, the girl reached out her free hand toward me.
“Onii-chan, hold this hand.”
It seemed she wanted us to hold hands. So, with the girl between us, Hatsune-san and I took each other’s hands and headed toward the park.

Since I had identified the location of the girl’s parents using my clairvoyance skill, I casually walked in that direction, and we were able to reunite quickly.
“Thank you so much…!”
The girl’s parents expressed their overwhelming gratitude.
The girl herself started crying as soon as she was reunited with her parents. Now, she seemed a bit calmer, being held by her father.
“No, I’m just glad you were able to reunite safely.”
“Yes, yes. I’m glad too, Shizuku-chan.”
Both Hatsune-san and I replied in turn.
After exchanging a few more casual words, we parted ways with the family.
***
“After seeing that girl and her parents, I can’t help but think that family is really nice.”
As we walked back toward the station, Hatsune-san suddenly said this. Although she was smiling, there was a hint of loneliness in her expression.
Seeing her profile like that reminded me of something I had been curious about for a while. I wondered if it would feel out of place to ask now.
“Speaking of family… why are you living alone, Hatsune-san?”
“Oh, you’re curious about that? I thought you were deliberately avoiding the topic.”
In response to my relatively probing question, Hatsune-san still wore a smile.
“It used to be that way, but I really want to know more about the person I like.”
“Is that so?”
Hatsune-san continued to smile as she spoke.
“Of course, if you don’t want to share, you can just ignore the question.”
“Well, it’s not that I don’t want to tell you… Oh, I know! If you beat me on the test, I’ll tell you.”
“Beat you on the test… does that mean I have to get first place?”
“Well, that seems to be the case.”
“That might be a bit tough.”
“In that case, let’s lower the bar a bit. You just have to be in the top 50.”
Honestly, even that isn’t easy, but it’s a more realistic goal than getting first place.
It seems like Hatsune-san doesn’t have a story she absolutely doesn’t want to share.
“Got it. I’ll accept those terms.”
“In exchange, if I score full marks in every subject, I want to know about you, Yakumo-kun.”
“I see… that’s how it is.”
It seems I’ve fallen into Hatsune-san’s negotiation strategy. She started with an unreasonable condition, then followed up with a slightly more relaxed one.
What do they call this kind of tactic again?
Moreover, she added another condition after I agreed to her initial one.
“By the way, what do you want to know about me, Hatsune-san?”
“I want to know the secret behind your strength. You did something amazing when you helped that girl earlier, right?”
The secret behind my strength.
In other words, the fact that I had been to another world and gained cheat skills there.
Hatsune-san is interested in the secret I’ve never shared with anyone.
“Well… I guess it’s only natural to be curious.”
“Yeah, I’m curious.”
She answered immediately.
“It’s not weird for me to want to know more about you because I like you, Yakumo-kun.”
“Yeah. I don’t plan on turning you down, but… are you sure you want the condition to be full marks in every subject?”
Honestly, I might be okay with sharing my secret with Hatsune-san.
It’s partly because I haven’t been able to hide it from the start, but more than that,
I want to know more about Hatsune-san, and I want her to know about me too.
That’s why I thought it might not be necessary to set such a strict condition like scoring full marks in every subject.
“If I only need to get first place, that would be too easy, right? It wouldn’t be fun if I didn’t have a challenge like getting full marks in every subject.”
Hatsune-san said this and smiled confidently.
Given that attitude, it seems that for her, achieving full marks in every subject feels like “a bit difficult but not unrealistic.”
“If that’s the case… if you get full marks in every subject, I’ll tell you about myself.”
I could have shared my secret unconditionally.
But having conditions for both of us would prevent Hatsune-san from feeling overly concerned.
“That’s settled then. Fuufufuu~~, having a little reward or goal makes me look forward to the test.”
While we were talking, we arrived at the station.
“Thanks for walking me home, Yakumo-kun. I had a great time today.”
“Oh, yeah. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Hatsune-san.”
Hatsune-san waved goodbye as she passed through the ticket gate.
