The Most Beautiful Girl In High School Made A Female Friend.
After the homeroom ended.
The class representative, sitting in front of me, turned around.
“Well then, shall we go, you two? It seems the other person has something to do and will be a little late.”
“Got it,” I replied.
As I was answering, I felt someone tugging at the sleeve of my uniform from beside me.
“Are you saying the class representative is coming with us to the shopping mall…?”
Initial thoughts raced through my mind.
“Yeah, and it looks like others will join us too.”
“We won’t be alone…”
Initial glances turned toward me with an almost resentful expression.
***
We arrived at a family restaurant inside the shopping mall by the station.
It seemed to be one of the popular spots for high school students in the area to hang out with friends after school.
As an introverted loner, it was obviously my first time here.
I was with Hatsune-san, the class representative, and another boy.
We sat at a table for four in the family restaurant.
“I’m Shiina Kyouya. Since we’re in the same class, you probably know my face and name, but it’s nice to meet you,” Shiina introduced himself from across the table.
He was a classmate brought by the class representative.
A central figure in the class’s extroverted group, he was also a handsome, intelligent guy serving as a student council member.
“…Nice to meet you,” he said.
“Y-yeah, nice to meet you,” I added awkwardly.
Hatsune-san and I, sitting next to each other, exchanged stiff greetings.
At first, Hatsune seemed somewhat dissatisfied that we weren’t alone together.
But since it was her first chance to hang out with classmates after school, she ended up joining us, yearning for that youthful experience.
“Actually, I have a sort of inseparable bond with Shiina-kun. That’s why I brought him here today,” the class representative said, sitting next to Shiina.
“Inseparable bond?”
“More like childhood friends,” Shiina answered my question.
“It doesn’t matter either way. We’ve known each other since elementary school,” he explained.
“I see.”
I didn’t know the details, but it seemed they had been good friends for a long time.
“More importantly, Shiina-kun, you’re supposed to participate in soccer too, but why are you skipping practice on the first day?”
“I didn’t skip; I had student council duties. I didn’t think everyone else was doing nothing…”
Shiina explained his situation when questioned by the class representative.
“Hmmm… Well, I guess that can’t be helped.”
“Though I understand not feeling like practicing, it’s a great opportunity for a sports festival, so it’s more fun and memorable if you try your best, like Ueno-kun,” Shiina said with a bright smile, seeming to empathize with me.
But my motivation for wanting to do well in the sports festival wasn’t such a dazzling one.
As expected of an extrovert… our thought processes are so different.
“As expected of Shiina-kun, you really understand,” the class representative agreed with him, nodding.
She was also on the extroverted side.
“That’s why I’d like you to encourage those participating in soccer, aside from Ueno-kun, to practice,” she said.
“Got it, leave it to me,” Shiina readily agreed to the class representative’s request.
“This guy has surprisingly good popularity, so if he reaches out, everyone else will come together,” she added.
The class representative looked at me with a proud expression.
“That’s great; it really helps.”
As I replied, I was thinking about something else.
To win against Kawasaki and the others in the soccer club, my classmates’ cooperation was essential, but forcing them to participate felt wrong.
I had experienced being forcibly invited to practice when I was an introverted person who had no motivation for the sports festival, and it had been quite annoying.
(Being forced to put in effort for an event that offers nothing in return is just painful…)
Ah, but wait.
If I put it another way, if there’s something to be gained, would I be more motivated…?
Since I’m asking for cooperation, I should also provide my classmates with enjoyment and a sense of achievement.
The cheat skills I obtained in this different world aren’t just for my use.
There are various ways to do this.
“Alright, it’s settled then. But Ueno-kun, why do you want to win so badly?” Shiina asked.
“That’s a bit complicated,” I replied.
“Complicated?”
Facing my vague answer, Shiina expressed his curiosity.
“Uh… well…”
“It’s not polite to pry further when the person involved has said it’s complicated. You really lack delicacy, Shiina-kun,” the class representative interjected.
“That’s true… Sorry, Ueno-kun,” Shiina said.
“No, it’s fine.”
As I struggled to answer, the class representative offered help.
I bowed my head slightly in gratitude, and the class representative smiled in return.
I didn’t mention the challenge from Kawasaki in this setting because I didn’t want Hatsune-san to hear about it.
It wouldn’t be a pleasant topic for her.
So, it would be better to settle everything where Hatsune-san wouldn’t know.
Glancing over at Hatsune-san, I saw her sipping juice through a straw, looking back at me with a puzzled expression.
“Well, regardless of the circumstances, let’s do our best in the sports festival!” Shiina renewed his enthusiasm.
With the conversation winding down, the class representative turned her attention to Hatsune-san.
“Now that we’ve covered the sports festival topic, let’s get to the main issue.”
“The main issue…?”
Hatsune-san looked at her with a confused expression.
“Ichigaya-san, didn’t you think, ‘Honestly, I didn’t need to be here for this conversation’?”
“To be honest, yes.”
“However, there’s a reason I invited Ichigaya-san here today.”
“I see…?”
“Yes. The reason is simply that I wanted to become friends with you, Ichigaya-san.”
“You want to be friends with me?”
Hatsune-san seemed a bit surprised by this response.
“Yes! Since we’re in the same class and sit close to each other, let’s talk more!”
“Uh, um…”
The girl known as the solitary beauty in our class, Ichigaya Hatsune, was just an introverted person.
Thus, she was showing her social awkwardness and confusion.
Since she could talk to me normally, it felt like an unusual sight.
As I watched from the side, Hatsune-san cast a glance toward me as if seeking help.
“Since it’s a good opportunity, why not give it a try?”
“Yeah…!”
Hatsune-san’s expression softened.
“Well then… nice to meet you,Class rep.”
“Yes.”
In front of the still awkward-looking Hatsune-san, the class representative responded in a gentle voice.
“Now, as a senior in romance, let’s hear all about your conversations with Ueno-kun!”
“Eh, what?”
Are they really going to talk about that with me right next to them…?
Isn’t that something usually discussed only among girls?
“Looks like Asuha is interested in romance.”
Shiina, the class representative’s childhood friend, also reacted.
Since everyone calls her the class representative, it’s easy to forget that her name is Senkawa Asuha.
“Thanks to someone being oblivious, I feel like I have to work hard.”
The class representative retorted with a slightly sharp tone.
Ah, I see.
I vaguely understood the relationship between the two of them.
They’re childhood friends, both good-looking and outgoing, in a relationship that’s more than friends but less than lovers… probably.
“Now, let’s leave this guy alone and have a chat, Ichigaya-san!”
While I was lost in my thoughts, the class representative was already engaging Hatsune-san in conversation.
***
After that, Hatsune-san and the class representative were fully engaged in conversation and had warmed up to each other.
“Wow, that was really helpful. Thank you, Ichigaya-san.”
“I had fun talking too.”
Even outside the family restaurant, the two continued chatting.
“Oh, right. Since we’re at it, let’s exchange LINE contacts!”
“Eh, sure…!”
The two took out their smartphones and exchanged their LINE information.
“Look, Shiina-kun! I got the contact of Ichigaya-san, who is famous for being the cutest girl in our school!”
“That’s a bit of an exaggeration, class rep…”
In front of the class representative, who was proudly showing her smartphone, Hatsune-san smiled wryly.
“I get that you’re happy, but it’s almost time for cram school.”
“Oh, is it already that time?”
When Shiina pointed it out, the class representative looked at the time displayed on her smartphone.
“Well then, Ichigaya-san, Ueno-kun, take your time! See you tomorrow!”
“Let’s start practicing from tomorrow!”
With those words, the class representative and Shiina walked away from us.
Now, it was just me and Hatsune-san.
“How was it?”
“Well… I was happy to make a friend who’s a girl.”
“That’s good to hear.”
I thought it was worth having Hatsune-san come along.
“But still, being alone with you is the best.”
“O-oh, really…?”
I felt a mix of happiness and a bit of embarrassment, along with another thought.
I wanted to spend more time alone with her.
“Hatsune-san, do you still have time after this?”
“Of course!”
Hatsune-san wore the brightest smile of the day.
