Chapter 86: Fighting Against the Goblins

“Well then, we’ll leave the entrance of the cave to you two.”

“Yeah. You two, be careful there.”

“Even though they’re only goblins, don’t let your guard down.”

Paula-san and Ilei-san were stationed outside the cave to kill any returning goblins. Even though there were only two of them, they looked so confident. They knew they could handle a group of 10 goblins easily. 

If anything were to happen, they could shout loud enough for us to hear inside the cave and escape to the carriage. Even though the enemy were goblins, we shouldn’t underestimate them. In a harsh world where only male could become a healer, everyone knew better than me that a moment of carelessness could cost us our lives.

“….Stop.”

Elmie, who was leading our way, stopped dead in her tracks. Maybe there were goblins at the end of the road.

The goblin was utilizing the natural formation of the cave and the cave was quite spacious. Elmie moved forward cautiously with a small torch in hand after she defeated the goblin standing guard at the entrance of the nest. The goblins inside still didn’t know we were ambushing them. 

“It seems there’s a large open area ahead. Let’s put out the fire and approach quietly.  We need to take control of the area in one go. Be cautious though. There might be traps set along the passage.”

In most fantasy stories, goblins were depicted as weak creatures with low intelligence. However, the goblins in this world were intelligent enough to set traps. We proceeded cautiously, looking for traps. 

“Gyagyagya!”

“Gyagya!”

We could hear the voices of goblins coming from deeper into the cave. It seemed there were at least several goblins in there. Now that we were close enough to hear their voices, we were also… Fortunate enough to smell their foul stench. It was amazing how goblins could live in a place that reeked horribly like this. 

“Let’s go!”

“Alright! Time to exterminate the enemy of mankind!”

Zap!!

Elmie and Tia-san rushed into the open area at the same time. 

“Gy-gya?!”

“Gyaa!!”

The goblins noticed our arrival, but it was already too late. Elmie and Tia moved swiftly, taking down goblins one after another. 

“HORYAAAA!”

Tia-san swung her large axe, cleaving several goblins in half with a single blow. She handled such a big axe effortlessly, killing every incoming goblin. This was definitely not something I would be able to do no matter how hard I tried. I doubt I could even lift her axe. 

“Too easy!”

 SMACK!!

“Gyaaa?!”

Suddenly, a large hail of ice came flying at Elmie and Tia-san, but Ferris blocked the ice with her large shield. 

“There are several Goblin Mages! Flora, Runes, please take care of it!”

“Leave it to us! Wind Cutter!”

“Alright! Icicle Bullet!”

“GYAGYAAAA!!”

It seemed there were special individuals like Goblin Mages that could use magic among the goblins. Magic attacks pose greater threat than arrows and bows, so Goblin Mages must be defeated first. However, we had Flora and Runes-san with us. The Goblin Mages were torn apart by Flora’s wind magic and Runes-san’s ice magic. 

I wanted to support them with barrier magic, but everyone was moving so fast that I couldn’t find the right timing to help them. In fact, I might just get in the way. Not to mention, everyone could avoid every single attack coming from the goblin. It seemed my healing magic wouldn’t have the chance to shine. Their swift response was to be expected though. Healer like me was rare in this world. A single blow could be fatal in a battle like this, hence why everyone always fought carefully by avoiding or blocking every incoming attack. 

“…Alright, looks like there’s no more goblins around.”

“We’ve defeated all the goblins in this hall.”

The battle ended in less than 5 minutes. None of them sustained any injuries. Jerome-san, who was stationed at the backline with me, also managed to defeat the goblins by throwing knives. 

In the end, I was the only one that didn’t contribute anything to the fight.

Nearly 50 goblin corpses scattered around the open space. Each one more gruesome than the other, but I knew there was no room for sympathy toward the goblins.

“Unfortunately, they’ve been dead for a few days already…”

“I see… I guess there’s nothing we can do about that then…”

Right. In this open space, there were also four human women. However, even from a distance, it was clear to see that they were already dead. If I had seen them up close, I would’ve vomited on the spot. 

“There were a lot of Goblin Mages too. It was a pretty formidable group. Fortunately, we managed to cull the group before they grow any bigger.”

“Exactly what Flora said. There are no men in this area. However, with a group this size, I’m sure they must have kidnapped men. Otherwise, there’s no way their numbers can grow this big. The kidnapped men are probably kept further inside.”

This open space seemed to be the goblins’ living quarter. There were tables and many goblins were sleeping when we launched our surprise attack. 

“They are definitely further inside. I’d like to bury these adventurers in a different place as soon as possible, but rescuing the kidnapped men takes priority now!”

“Yeah, let’s move deeper quickly.”

Just like what Tia-san said, there was only one path leading further ahead from this open space. Given how much of a ruckus we had made during the fight, the goblins further inside must’ve already noticed us. They might be on their way to escape while bringing the kidnapped men along with them. We needed to hurry and catch them.
