- 47: To Plant a Sapling and To Gather as a Cult
As a starry night filled the sky, I looked over by the distance to witness the sight of a slowly healing divine beast.
“…” staring at their mythological nature, one would be amazed to see the very presence of their bodies.
Standing like prideful lions, these half-eagles and half-lions stared at Mina with thankful gazes, and soon enough, they looked to me by the distance and called with a screeching call of a mix between a lion and an eagle.
*Kwaarr*
“…Shay, please come here.” said Mina as she turned to me and gestured me to greet the beast.
As I approached them, I came and bowed my head in respect.
“They wanted to give thanks. They said that because of the coming winter, they came into the forest in search for food.”
“…Coming winter? How much time do we have before winter begins?” I asked in surprise winter was already coming.
*Kwaaarr!*
“I guess in around 60 days…they said that they are grateful for your actions of giving them the hail-mary plants to heal their wounds. It’ll probably take till morning for them to fully heal.” said Mina in an gladdened tone.
“Hmm, should I give something for them to eat?” I asked.
“Well…I just hope this isn’t a bother, but do you have any extra meat stored?” she asked.
“Hmm, a lot of my meats are dried. Since I don’t have a cold storage, its hard to keep them fresh after I had them hunted. ” I explained.
“That could work, please, have it brought here.” she said as she went and tended to their wounds again.
As I left for a few minutes to get the dried meat, I returned witht about a full box of them. Since I was able to hunt a deer just a few days ago, the meat in the box hasn’t fully been dried yet.
The moment I put the box down, the griffins immediately noticed the smell and looked my way as I carried the meats.
*Kwaarr* as the Griffins screeched, it extended its neck and simply went to eat the dried meats with no hesitation.
“Hmm, I’ll go inside and cook us a meal, do you want anything?” I asked.
“No, its okay…I want to be here and tend to their needs.” she said as she looked quite gentle towards the griffins.
Seeing her act this way, I was curious.
“So the Elves worshiped the Griffins?” I asked.
“Not in a sense, griffins were rare…and they were known as the Guardians of the Sky. Whenever us elves meet these Griffins, we always act with a kind gesture due to the fact that these Griffins were Divine Beings…their very existence stands proof of being holy.”
“…but they seem like any other animal to me though?” I asked.
“…My grandfather was one of the many who gained the bond with a griffin, and through this bond, our tribe has been blessed ever since. Food was never scarce, our village was always prospering and the children were happy. But once the Griffin died of old age, everything turned upside down.” in her last words, her tone was rather depressed because of a bad memory….
“…”
“They give in miracles…they simply are divine.” she said.
“So their like Ruby Cows?” I asked.
“Exactly…rare but gold to its luck.” she said.
“I see…”
As I stared at her with an empathetic gaze, I reached out my hand and handed her an item.
“Hmm? What is this?” she asked.
“This is the key that lets you pass through the barrier. I’m giving it to you so that you can decide when the griffins would leave.” I said.
“…thank you.” she said.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m going to be making another one for myself. That way, we both have a key to this place. And also, if you ever need to save another animal, you don’t need to call on me for that.” I said as I turned my back and headed back to the house.
As the night passed, I woke up the next day to find that the griffins had already left.
“Hmm, they sure do leave early.”
As I walked out to the farm, I saw that Mina was out by the river, looking at the water wheel.
“…What are you looking at?” I asked as I went near her.
“This is quite the design. A way to use the water flow from the river to turn the wheel while its filled with water…and as it reaches up top, it fills in to the tank above.” she said, praisingly.
“…Where’s the griffins?” I asked.
“They left quite a while ago.” she said as she looked to me with a smile.
“I’m guessing from that face that they were fine?”
“They were…thank you.”
“No problem. Okay then, now that that problem is dealt with, we can move on with the more pressing matter.” I said.
“Right, the sapling.” she said.
“Do you know where we should plant it?” she asked.
“I do…please grab the sapling and follow me.”
As I went and grabbed the sapling from the basement and followed her. We arrived at the center of my land.
“We’re planting it here?” I asked.
“Well yes. Because what we need for the sapling is a grand space. Putting it in the center would help us out since if this thing grows well enough, it won’t just take a simple space like any other tree would…this tree would represent the Holy Goddess herself, it’ll probably take the whole land.” she said.
“…Right.” being a bit skeptical of her words, I didn’t hesitate to dig up the ground and use my hands to place the sapling down.
As I planted it well, I stared at the sapling and wondered to myself.
‘This might be more than what I could expect…’
And in that wonder, I smiled.
“…” in the silence that came after I planted the sapling, I turned to Mina…only to see her tears fall from her cheeks.
“…Mina.” as I called her name, she could only turn to me and gave me a smile filled with gratitude.
“…to think that in just a few days of meeting you, we were able to give this seed a chance…in all my life, this has never happened before. 400 years…three guardians…and the fact that you….you were able to succeed this much with the plant in only a short matter, it just seems so unbelievable. Its almost unfair to those past guardians…” she said.
“Is it bad?” I asked.
“No…it’s the greatest thing that I have ever accomplished.” she said as she fell to her knees.
“I’m sorry…I couldn’t prepare myself for this…it just seems like a dream…”
“…It’s not a dream and this I just the start of it all…The Goddess has an Enemy, and as her chosen Guardian, I’ll do what I need to do to succeed and to protect.” as I said this, I turned to the plant and simply gazed upon its small growing nature…
‘this is just the start.’

Somewhere far off in a lone island, surrounded by strong storms and typhoons that seems to be unending, a temple was found in that island, a temple filled with a circle of masked people on whom they simply gazed upon the sign of death.
Their religion. Death.
“Let us begin our prayer…” said the man who wore a cow’s skull as a mask and sat as the leader of the circle.
“Oh, eternal darkness, we beseech thee,
Grant us passage to realms unseen.
In the embrace of shadows, we find solace,
As we tread the path to the abyss.
Gather us, O harbinger of the final breath,
Guide our souls to the realm of death.
Through the veil of night, we shall ascend,
To dwell forever in the realms without end.
Death, thou art our sacred deliverance,
Cloak us in thy shroud of reverence.
In the silence of the void, we shall rejoice,
For in death’s embrace, we find our voice.
Grant us wisdom, O God of the unknown,
In thy presence, we are never alone.
Embrace us in thy eternal embrace,
And lead us to the sacred resting place.
As we bow before thee, O death divine,
Grant us peace in thy grand design.
For in the cycle of life and demise,
We find meaning beneath the starlit skies.
Shava…
““Shava…””
In the end of this prayer, the leader brought out the body of a young ruby calf as it was tied with a black knot, he simply brought out his dagger, which he then proceeded to slowly pass on the knife to his compatriot
“Let thy fellow ceremony begin.” said the leader.
And in his call, the compatriot, slits the calf’s head in two with no sense of hesitation.
No cries were heard from the calf, and as its gem slowly drips with blood, the gem falls to the table with lost colors and in it, the compatriot who slits the head of the calf, simply picks up the gem and ingested it in the gorish reason.
“You have done well..” said the leader
“Thank you…” and in response, the young compatriot lifts the calf head into the air and to which he casted a magical spell for which it made the calf’s skin and flesh to rot in seconds.
All that was left was its skull that was fit to use as a mask.
“The Ceremony has ended, now let us begin our initial call for this meeting. Does anyone have anything to say?” asked the leader.
“For a month now, the Hearts Kingdom has been cleansed. The king’s identity has been found to be the count of pestilence and with it, he was defeated.” said a man who wore the mask of a giant snake’s skull.
“That count of pestilence was defeated…to think that such note was made.” asked the leader
“The news has been spread nation wide with the fact that the one’s who defeated it was the Dragon Empire. They have been hailed as the heroes since then.” said the Snake Skull wearing worshipper.
“No mortal is capable of defeating the smell of rot and death…Have you figured out how it was done?”
“No one knows for sure, but it was said that the body has been hidden by the heart’s kingdom and the head has been taken into the Dragon Empire’s guarding…not a single one of our spies are able to retrieve the head nor the body. The security for the demon has been tight.”
”Hmm, we shouldn’t rush this process…that head is valuable and so is the body. We still have a chance to bring out its usefulness in time. But to think that he was defeated…”said the leader in quite the shock.
“it was speculated that Aprecius Khali, the one who survived the torture and has returned to the Dragon Empire after being able to slay the fully demonized mage of the heart’s kingdom was able to bend the success of defeating the count..” said the mn who wore the skull of a goblin.
“Aprecius Khali…Hmm, we should have dealt with him the moment we caught him under our grasp. His blood may have been valuable, but look at what it costed us instead.” angrily spoke the leader.
“Hmm, yes this was a mistake on our part…Still I don’t think it was Aprecius Khali who brought out the death of the count…it just seems impossible for a man of his calibre.” said one of the compatriots.
“Indeed, I don’t believe it to be true as well, What else has happened?” asked the leader.
“Paired with the news of the Count, the princess has returned to the empire. Since the discovery of the Heart’s Kingdom being invaded by the demons, and her return, the security within the empire has tightened, the emperor is not making any excuses of letting a demon pass by. Already, 75 of our spies have been dealt inside the empire.”
“75…that’s quite a number…we should try to avoid the empire for now. Lets focus on the other kingdoms instead.”
“Speaking of other kingdoms, The next king to succeed the crown of the Hearts kingdom has been finally decided.”
“Oh? And who was it that was chosen?”
“Duke Reveral Crowne…the general who organizes the naval power of the kingdom.”
“Hmm, as expected as much.” said the leader.
“After a month of debate, it was finally made through the decisions of its people. With that said, the Kingdom has been in lockdown since then. most of our spies have been dealt with and to it, the kingdom has turned rather difficult to handle.”
“Almost all of our spies?! that seems impossible, how was it possible that our spies were figured out?” asked the leader.
“Aprecius Khali visited the kingdom and he was able to cleanse the kingdom with his magic.”
“Damn it!” hearing the mage’s name made the leader’s blood boil.
“There’s more news about the hearts kingdom, the countess has fled and is missing.”
“Lady Cher Dokrow? Hmm, she was aware of our plans…find her and eliminate her before she spreads our names across the nation.”
“As you wish.” said one of the compatriots.
“And Lastly, this news is one that must be held in high regards. its about the newly chosen Guardian.”
“Guardian? The Guardian of the Holy Seed? Am I hearing you right?” he asked.
“We’ve sent 36 of our highly trained assassins to follow the Elf, the holder of the seed, they reported back to us that they were able to find her in the Flat Bioma.”
“The Flat Bioma? Why is she returning there? Does she not remember the past actions?”
“We received reports that they were planning to attack a couple of nights ago…but ever since then, we haven’t gained back a report of the situation.”
“We believe that they were all taken out.”
“by the Elf? That seems unlikely. Even for her, a dozen of our highly trained assassin’s is hard for her to handle…that could only mean that it was the Guardian who took them…am I correct?” he asked.
“Yes…”
“have you figured out who this new guardian was?”
“No…no records of his name has been set. We haven’t even got a sketch of his face or features…but there were rumors that in a town called Desvey, one person was said to have passed through the flat bioma and has not returned since. It was said that this person had the strength of a giant.”
“A rumor of that kind is not just something we can ignore, Have this rumor be dug upon and send in another group to try and find the 36 assassins?” asked the leader.
“We did, but all we got in return was a sign that they were attacked by wild beast in the flat bioma.”
“Hmm, this seems troubling. Unless we can figure out a way to who it is or what it is that’s interfering with out network of assassin’s, we can’t deal with the guardian head on. We need information.”
“…”
“…”
“So let us be patient. Have our men be sent to all the corners and entrances outside of the flat bioma’s walls and have them wait there until we can finally be certain of this new guardian.
“As you wish.”
“…finally after 20 years, she has chosen yet another champion…but it is her folly once again. Death cannot be escaped…death is eternal. Vendigo must be please to see that he has a new partner in his cell.”
