- 46: Harvesting the Fruits and Getting some unexpected Guest.
As early as the day did start, I went on with my original chore, which was to pick and harvest the fruits and vegetables in my garden.
The first thing on my mind was the fruits.
From the apples to oranges and even the berries, I didn’t waste any time picking the ripe looking fruits dangling on the tree.
As I worked, by the distance, Mina could be seen simply looking over at the porch to my direction.
“Hmm…” as I stared back at her, she somewhat stared back at my notice and soon she decided to come by the garden.
“…Good Morning.” I cheerfully said as I picked a ripe apple from the tree.
“Good morning…” she said in a more somber tone.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I was wondering about what you said…about the cultist.”
“…Yeah? And what?”
“You were able to take on 36 of them…how?” she asked as she looked rather nervous about my actions.
“Well…I was pretty good with a knife back in my past life, and I had magic to aid me in the fight.”
“…So you were an assassin in your past life?” she asked.
“Not really, I’m more of a thief, and a good one at that.”
“…”
“Well, also if your wondering about the sapling, I still haven’t decided on where to plant it yet. If you want, you can help me decide where to plant that thing.” I said as I continued on picking out the apples.
“Where is it now?” she asked as she then went and reached out for an apple.
“…Its in the basement, hidden.” I said as I stared at her staring at the apple.
“…Hmm, okay. I’ll find a place.” she said as she then drops the apple into the basket.
“Also, if your wondering about the security of this place, don’t worry about it, I changed the characteristics of the barrier I put around area. Its more of a dome now compared to before when it was just a electric shield standing up. And the electricity is more intense now compared to before. So if a person does make it across, they’ll be burned up before they could take another step.” I said confidently.
“…Hmm, yes I noticed it. A barrier of such mechanism must have been quite difficult to make, how were you able to craft it?” as she asked this an uncertain and quite shocking expression was put on her face. A expression of pure curiosity.
“Eh?” and seeing her ask about it made me feel a shiver down to my spine. The only truth that came from this question was the [All Known Book], yet remembering back to when I did mention the book to the goddess, it ended up nearly killing me in its retribution. So telling the truth wasn’t an option for me…I became nervous.
“I mean, I know my fair shares of magic knowledge…you created a barrier that’s essentially a pure safe of security. In my first encounter with it, I knew this place was protected…and when you created it into a dome, it became even more safer. So I’m curious, did your past life involved you being a master at some unknown magic? Because even at my age, I have never seen this kind of spell before.” she said impressively so.
“…Y-yes.” the only thing I could do at that moment was lie…lie at the skin of my teeth.
“Impressive, so in your past life, was the world advanced in the prospects of magic?” she asked, quite curiously.
“Well, in a way…I guess it was pretty advance.” I said as I thought of the accomplishments of man in a sense that they were advanced in a scientific matter.
“…I see, the universe is so broad that even outside of the world of Atlas, there are those that are just as similar as this world…yet even more so advanced. The thought of it is just amazing to me…” she said as she looked rather impressed by it.
“…” and I can only look at her as a cold sweat drips down from my face and unto the ground.
“W-well anyway, should we look for a place to plant the sapling?” I asked as I tried to change the subject.
“But It seems like your still busy with picking your harvest, maybe we can do it after this job.” she said as she continued picking on the apples.
As we worked with the harvest, each new fruit she came upon, she would come and ask me its name and flavor.
“You know, all of the fruits that’s in this garden really is a new sight for me, like this thing, this red looking fruit, what is it called?” she asked.
“That’s an apple, its one of the most common fruits found back on my world.”
“An Apple? Hmm, its sweet…juicy…and a bit tarty…” she said as she smiled looking at the fruit, remembering the flavors she ate yesterday.
“Yeah, because of how it was, in my world, we even use it as a baked ingredient. A pie for example.” I said as lifted the basket filled with apples and placed it on the cart.
“Hmm, that seems rather fascinating.”
It was by this moment, that we had finished picking the apples and we moved on to the oranges.
“I would like to taste that kind of pie…” she said, excitingly so.
“Okay, we also have this thing. Can you guess what its name is?” I asked as I picked an orange.
“Well…it’s the color orange and it looks similar to that of one of the most rancid fruits found at the forest…we called that fruit, the Rance Fruit, because of how rotten it tasted and smelled.” she said jokingly.
“…well, you said it the first time. We called this fruit, the orange. Here, taste it.” I said as I tossed her the orange.
“Hmm, that’s a bit ironic.” as she teared the fruit up in half, she tried smelling it first.
*sniff* *sniff* “Hnn, its very fragrant, almost leathery like…”
“Don’t try to eat the skin, just peel it off and eat the inside, but not the seeds.” I said as I tried leading her on how to eat the orange.
“Okay.” as she opened her mouth, she got a taste of the orange. With her first bite of it, some of the juices spilled from her mouth.
“Ohh..its very tangy and sweet!” she said as she then continues devour all of its slices.
“Hmm, is it good?” I asked.
“Yeah! Its so juicy, you might even be able to make a juice out of this.” she said.
“Well, we did back at my past life. Some even made juices of them in jugs, its big enough to last a person a whole week.” I said.
“ Hmm, and what about this one?” she asked as she pointed to the grape vines.
“Does that remind you of anything?” I asked.
“Well…it does remind me of the fruits that people used in making wine…but the color is a bit different. We elves used to make wine out of this but the fruits came out of tall hanging trees. The one you have is made from low hanging vines.”
“This is called a grape.” I said as I showed her a plump looking table grape.
“…Huh? Wait, are there two kinds of grapes?” she asked as she then notices a weird small and bluer looking grape.”
“Oh, that thing is different. This on my hand is a table grape, one that usually meant for eating on the table as a snack, while this one, the bluer and more smaller grape is called a wine grape, this thing is what we used in making wine, or alcohol. In a way, I guess some of the fruits in this world was similar ot that of my old world.” I said as I picked out the wine grape.
“Hmm…so are you planning on making wine?” she asked.
“Well, yeah.” I said as I placed these grapes down on the basket.
“Since I was brought here as a second chance, a lot of things has happened. But the one thing I missed was the food…the taste of home. Since I planned to become a farmer, the goddess gifted me with the sack that contained all of the seeds I needed…so now, my goal in life is to bring the flavors of my old world into this world.”
“Hmm, that’s a grand dream…” she said as she looked to me with a smile.
As we continued on harvesting the fruits, the sun finally set and by the end, we were able to harvest enough where I planned to bring to Desvey Town. In total we harvested 6 basket full of fruits. Those fruits being, the Apple, the Orange, the Banana, the Table Grapes, the Mangoes and the Strawberries. All kinds of fruits that seemed good enough to sell.
“…What are you going to do with them?” she asked.
“I plan to deliver it to Desvey town and have it be introduce to the Chief. I’m hoping that they would like it.
“Hmm, these kinds of fruits are one of a kind. Their valuable because of how rare they are. Do you know the value that these things bring?” she said.
“I already have a plan for that.” she said.
“Oh? And what are you planning to do?”
“Just sell it at the market I guess, that should be good enough seeing as how I’m not a merchant, I’m a farmer.”
“That’s not really an excuse. These things are worth a fortune.” she said.
“…Right, well if the time comes, I’ll handle the price.” I said as I then went and placed the cart back into the front of the house.
As I did, Mina went into the field to search for a place to plant the sapling. While I was driving the cart with the horse, I came upon the Capatora who was simply hanging around at my porch like it was its own house.
“Hmm.” as I placed the cart down, I grabbed a few table grapes off of the basket and gave it to the Capatora [Capybara], and in no time at all, this cute rodent went and simply ate the grape with no hesitation at all.
“aww.…this cute bastard.” I said as I then went and tried to place a blanket over the fruits.
By now, with my experience as a farmer, one of the ways to preserve the fruits and vegetables was through a cold storage. A freezer. But at the moment, I don’t have that yet…so I planned to find a way to create that same sort of mechanism.
So with said, I asked the All-Known Book.
“AK, how do I create a freezing environment as a storage for my harvest?”
[ANALYZING…ANALYSIS COMPLETE! ONE OF THE WAYS THAT A PERSON CAN CREATE A COLD STORAGE IS THROUGH THE USE OF THE ICE ELEMENT. PROCURING AN ICE ELEMENT CRYSTAL IS HARD AND CAN ONLY BE FOUND AT THE PEAK OF SOME SNOWY MOUNTAINS. THERE IS ONE NEARBY THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO. ONCE YOU OBTAIN THIS ICE ELEMENTAL CRYSTAL, PLEASE PROCEED ON FOLLOWING THE BLUEPRINTS IN CREATING THE COLD STORAGE.]
As the All-known book showed me a map regarding the location of the Elemental Ice crystal, it also showed me a file of a detailed instruction on how to create a big freezer.
“Hmm, this is a bit far…but it’ll probably just take me a day to make it there if I rode on my iron stead.”
As I said this, I suddenly noticed Mina coming back to the farm. She was running at a furious pace and to it, she screamed.
“Shay! Please, come here, quickly!” she said as she then runs back to where she came from.
And in response, I followed her back.
Running at a hurrying pace, I finally came to a stop within the edge of one of the barriers.
“!?” in front of me, two beast were found laying on the floor, as they were filled with scarring injuries and bleeding out like faucets. Their heavy breaths could be heard, a sign of tiring animal, a beast about to die.
This beast was one that I could only recall as something implausible…a fantasy…
These beasts in front of me were Gryffons.
“…What the-”
“Please save them! These Gryffons are a holy to the Elven race…we musn’t let them perish!”
She said.
And in quick action, I quickly brought out my key and opened a path to the gryffons.
As I checked their conditions, I noticed that they were to injured ot move from their place, so I had to quickly act on my instinct and leave to get some medicine from the house.
“Stay here, I’ll go and get some medicine.” I said as I ran back to the farm.
As I ran back, I had to ask the All-Known book what was needed to help those Gryffons.
And its answer was what I predicted.
[ANALYZING…ANALYSIS COMPLETE…THE ONLY FORM OF MEDICINE THAT CAN GIVE THE GRYFFONS A HIGH CHANCE OF SURVIVAL IS THE HAIL MARY PLANTS. FEED EACH GRYFFON 10 LEAVES OF THE HAIL MARY PLANTS AND IN TIME, THE PLANTS WILL DO ITS WONDERS ON THE GRYFFONS.]
And in my action, I made my way to the garden where I planted those Hail Mary Plants. As I ran back immediately, I saw that Mina was now fighting ten gigantic spiders out in the forest.
‘What the-’
But as I saw it happen, I then immediately went and pulled the Gryffons into the barrier’s property. Since I couldn’t heal them while they were injured on the spot and with the constant fear that those Giant Spiders would attack us, I had to prioritize their safety.
So I pulled them in.
Having to reinforced my body with mana, I carried them one by one…
And to my reaction, these gryffons were heavy.
“GhK!” heavy enough that when I tried to carry one, it was like pushing on the great eden wall with just one hand.
Slowly but surely, I was able to put the gryffons into the barrier and once I did, I called out to Mina to tell her that they were in.
“Mina! Come on!”
As she noticed my call, she turned to me and saw that the Gryffons were inside, so in action, she did one last attack to the Giant Spiders using a very toxic poison gas. Once she threw it at them, she rushed back in and I immediately closed the barrier once again.
Not before long, the spiders came and tried to attack us, but they only meet the barrier and were shocked in place.
“!!”
The spiders felt the danger from the barrier and soon gave up on their meal.
“…Okay, lets get started.” as I said this, I pulled the Hail-Mary leaves from my pocket and simply presented it to the gryffons.
“…Is that a hail-mary plant?” she asked as she saw me feed it to the gryffons.
“Yeah, I’m growing a few in the farm. You probably didn’t saw them because of how they become transparent during the day.” I said as I successfully fed one of the gryffons 10 hail-mary plants.
“I can’t believe it, I’ve never heard of a man capable of growing this plant. Even Vendigo said that only blessed people were able to successfully raise them…”
“Well anyway, we should stay here for a while and watch over the gryffons as they heal.” I said as I finished feeding the gryffons, the hail mary plant.
“R-right.” it was clear to me that Mina was just as shocked as one would normally be. Either way, today was a very eventful day.
