ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Leaving the classroom in a gloomy mood, we met up with Riona and started heading home.
“Has your class decided what to do for the play, Ryouya?”
“Yeah, we’re doing Snow White. By the way, I’m playing the role of Snow White.”
“You’re Snow White?”
“…Yeah, mostly because of Reona’s scheming.”
“‘Scheming’ sounds so bad. I just nominated you to give you a chance to shine, since you don’t usually get to play the lead, Ryouya-kun.”
“Onee-chan really is kind.”
The way Riona worded it made Reona had done something good, but no matter how I looked at it, she obviously did that for her own selfish reasons. I deeply regretted having fallen asleep during the discussion, but thinking it over, even if I had been awake, I wouldn’t have been able to stop it anyway. Sadly, in a classroom where I had zero presence and Reona was super popular, the difference in influence between us was staggering.
“Ahh, maybe a typhoon will hit and the school festival will get canceled…”
“They’ve prepared a backup day just in case that happens, so everything will be just fine.”
“Yeah, so Ryouya-kun doesn’t have to worry about anything.”
“It’s seriously painful when you give a dead-serious answer to something I said half-jokingly…”
It seemed there was no way for me to escape the play after all. Being forced to cross-dress in front of a huge crowd sounded like torture.
If this ruins my chances of getting married someday, how are they planning to take responsibility for that? Well, not like there’s any girl out there who’d want to have me as her husband anyway, so maybe there’s no need for me to worry about that.
“By the way, tomorrow’s homeroom is going to be pretty important too, so make sure you don’t fall asleep again, okay?”
“Uh… What are we deciding again?”
“Eh? I’m pretty sure it was talked about a lot during homeroom?”
“Sorry, I don’t remember at all, so I was probably asleep then too.”
“Ryouya-kun, you’re just so… Ryouya-kun.”
“Yup, Ryouya is definitely Ryouya.”
Hearing my answer, Reona and Riona both looked exasperated.
Stop using my name like it’s an insult.
“Tomorrow we’re deciding on the athletic events.”
“Oh, that…”
“Why the gloomy face, Ryouya?”
“Stuff happened last year…”
The nightmare from last year resurfaced—when I got forced to participate in the fifteen-hundred-meter race, the most unpopular event that no one wanted to do. It put me in an incredibly depressed mood. Forcing the loner like me to take it was nothing short of demonic. I still remembered seriously debating whether to fake being sick to skip the school festival entirely.
“This year, we’re having you do the three-legged race, so just be ready for that, okay?”
“Wait, isn’t the three-legged race the mixed-gender one? That’s clearly an event meant for the extrovert crowd!”
That was something only the privileged elite with a significant other could truly enjoy.
It wasn’t meant for introverted loners like me. And besides, I couldn’t even imagine there being a girl willing to pair up with me, so it was impossible for me to participate in that event from the start.
“By the way, I’ll be your partner, Ryouya-kun, so nice working with you.”
“Just to make sure… You’re really okay with that? I mean, there are other options too, right?”
“…Hey, what exactly do you mean by that?”
“Ryouya, are you planning to pair up with some other girl?”
“I’d really like you to tell Riona and me exactly who this ‘other girl’ is.”
Reona and Riona closed in on me, their faces completely emotionless. Their eyes were locked on me with such intensity that I genuinely felt like they might kill me depending on how I answered.
What I meant was, couldn’t we pick a different event instead of the three-legged race? But judging by their reaction, they clearly thought I wanted to pair up with another girl besides Reona.
“No, no! What I meant was, aren’t there other event options besides the three-legged race?
I mean, if I’m doing the three-legged race, it’s absolutely gotta be with Reona. No one else.”
Besides, I didn’t have any other girls to partner with anyway, especially after the whole wallet incident before summer break, which had left me pretty much shunned by the rest of the class. There were no other choices.
“Hoo~ So from Ryouya-kun’s perspective, I’m the only one for you, huh?”
“I’m going to remember those words, every single one of them.”
Up until just a moment ago, Reona and Riona had been radiating dark, heavy auras, but now they were suddenly in a great mood. Thanks to that, I somehow managed to get out of the crisis.
I decided not to say anything extra anymore. After all that emotionally exhausting back-and-forth, I was completely drained, but Reona and Riona didn’t let me go home right away. They kept me company for a while longer.

Chapter 97: I’ll Keep That a Surprise for When the Time Comes
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Since everything that needed to be decided in the homeroom about the school festival, which would take place over several days, had been settled, we officially entered the full-fledged preparation period starting today. At our school’s festival, the “cultural division,” equivalent to a cultural festival, would be held over two days, and the “athletic division,” equivalent to a sports festival, would be held over one day, so there was a lot we needed to prepare and practice. Because of that, the preparation period was set to be quite long.
Classes were even shortened to make time for festival preparations, which must have felt like heaven to students who hated studying. That was what I was thinking while doing warm-up exercises on the school grounds.
“Let’s wrap up the warm-up around here and start practicing,”
“Yeah. I can’t drag Reona down and embarrass her, so I’m going to give it my all.”
In the end, it had been decided that we would participate in the three-legged race. Since I didn’t have any other option in the end, I intended to take this race seriously. If it had been an individual event, I probably wouldn’t have planned to try this hard. But since I would be teaming up with Reona to run together, there was no way I could slack off.
I couldn’t allow a situation where we lost badly because of me and Reona got laughed at as the result. When Reona heard what I said, she instantly brightened up.
“Then do your best to make me satisfied.”
“Yeah, since it’s rare for me to get serious, you can look forward to it.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing Ryouya-kun’s serious side.”
While having that conversation, we pressed our bodies together and tied our ankles with a rope.
During the school trip, there had also been moments when I got close to Reona, but she was still just as soft as ever. Man, my heart was pounding like crazy, but I somehow managed to drive away my worldly desires and focus on the task at hand. I had just declared I would give it my all, so there was no way I could afford a screw-up right off the bat.
“Let’s start with the left foot from my side and the right foot from Ryouya-kun’s side,”
“Okay, got it.”
After deciding which foot to start with, we kicked off with a synchronized “One, two!” Since it was our first attempt, we didn’t run very smoothly, but we managed not to fall, so the start wasn’t too bad.
“Looks like a lot of the others are struggling.”
“Yeah, some of them are tripping right from the start, which probably means they didn’t talk things through enough. But even among the ones who did discuss it properly, not everyone’s doing well.”
“Doesn’t that mean we have amazing compatibility?”
Reona grinned as she asked me that. Without giving it much thought, I said what popped into my head.
“We’re doing better than most because our heights are about the same.”
When there was a big height difference, the stride length differed too, so that must be one reason why others were struggling. In fact, the pairs with little height difference seemed to be doing relatively well. Just as I was thinking that far, I finally realized the huge mistake I had made.
When Reona or Riona asked me questions like that, they were usually hoping for a romantic answer. And yet, I had responded with something completely lacking in romance. Despite having made the same mistake countless times before, it seemed I hadn’t learned a thing yet.
“…Just when I thought you said something cool earlier… Now I’m disappointed and sad.”
“Sorry.”
“Looks like Ryouya-kun might need some proper education.”
“Education? What exactly are you planning to do to me…?”
“I’ll keep that a surprise for when the time comes.”
Reona said that with a mischievous smile. No matter how you looked at it, there was no way it was going to be anything good. It might already be too late, but I decided I needed to be extra careful about what I said.
After that, while taking water breaks here and there, we continued practicing for a while, and our coordination started to look pretty good. I felt like if we lost the rhythm after a day, we could easily get it back quickly given how smooth sailing our practice session was.
“…It’s already this late?”
“They say time flies when you’re having fun, and it really does.”
“Yeah, it really does.”
Having learned from my earlier blunder, I answered like that. Whether this response was exactly right, I wasn’t sure, but at least it shouldn’t count as a bad answer.
“So that means Ryouya-kun is having fun doing the three-legged race with me too.”
“Well, I guess you could say that.”
“Ryouya-kun, you’re still as stubborn as ever.”
“That’s just who I am.”
“Yeah, I know.”
Having spent so much dense time with Reona and Riona, it was no wonder they both knew exactly what kind of person I was. While chatting like that, we helped our classmates clean up the equipment we had used, putting it back into the gym storage room.
“Alright, this should be the last one.”
“Yeah, once we put this away, let’s head back quickly.”
“Definitely. It’s still hot, and I’m sweaty. I want to change clothes fast.”
Once we put away the color cones we were carrying into the gym storage, today’s practice would be done. Since the front of the storage was full, we carried them to the back. Then, from the entrance, we heard the heavy door slam shut with a loud bang, followed by the click of a lock turning.
“…Hey, was that just my imagination, or did I just hear the sound of a lock?”
“No, I heard it too.”
“You don’t think… We got locked in, do you?”
“Let’s check just in case.”
Reona and I hurried back to the entrance and tried to open the door, but it didn’t budge an inch. Ah, crap. We were really, seriously locked in.
