After that, we made our way to the main shrine and got in line to pray. Apparently, the “Enkiri Enmusubi Stone” we saw earlier was something you were supposed to visit and make a wish at after paying your respects at the main shrine. There, you would sever the ties you wanted to cut and bind the ones you wanted to form.
“It’s pretty crowded here too, huh.”
“Everyone was lining up at the Enkiri Enmusubi Stone too, so it looks like it’ll take a while before our turn.”
“Yeah, this is what everyone came for after all.”
We chatted like that while waiting for our turn. If it was already like this on a weekday, there was no doubt that the line would be insanely long on the weekend—just like the lines for amusement park rides.
“Speaking of which, once the school trip is over, we’ll have to start getting ready for the school festival, huh?”
“Yeah. It’s next month, so I guess we’ll jump straight into preparations. Since second-years are in charge of the play, it’ll probably be mostly practice and making props.”
“…Just thinking about it is already making me feel depressed.”
The Amaki High School festival was like a combination of a cultural festival and a sports festival held at other schools. Two days were dedicated to the cultural side, and the last day was for the athletic events.
All six grades of the middle and high school divisions were divided into teams to compete against each other, making it a major school event. But for loners like me, it was nothing but a painful and troublesome ordeal. The only ones who could truly enjoy the festival as part of their youth were the students from the upper social tiers within the school.
I vaguely remembered grumbling about the same thing the last time this topic came up. As I was recalling that, Reona spoke up with a bright smile.
“I’m counting on you to deliver a stellar performance, Ryouya-kun.”
“No, no. No matter how you look at it, I’m definitely backstage crew type. Or maybe just a background extra with no lines.”
“We’re going to have you participate as a main character this year so you can actually enjoy the school festival, Ryouya.”
“What!? Seriously!?”
Depending on the play, being a main character would mean memorizing a ton of lines and practicing a lot. Plus, I’d have to coordinate with everyone else. Honestly, it sounded like an absolute nightmare.
“Don’t worry! Riona and I will totally back you up, so let’s do our best together.”
“This year’s school festival will be an unforgettable memory for sure.”
“…Yeah, I guess I’ll give it my best shot… moderately.”
I wasn’t remotely excited about it, but with Reona and Riona being so fired up, there was no way I could say I didn’t want to do it.
While we chatted about the school festival, the line moved forward, and finally, it was our turn. As usual, I had no idea about the proper etiquette for shrine visits, so I just did it roughly, figuring that sincerity was what mattered most in the end.
“Alright, next let’s write on the katashiro.”
“I’m seriously having a hard time figuring out what to write.”
“Onee-chan and I already decided on what to write.”
Each of us grabbed a katashiro, a substitute talisman, and started writing. On the katashiro, you were supposed to write the ties you wanted to sever and the ones you wanted to form. After thinking it over, I decided to write about wanting to get rid of my bad habit of overthinking everything negatively.
“Looks like Ryouya-kun and Riona are finished too, so let’s head over to the Enkiri Enmusubi Stone we’ve all been waiting for.”
“What did you two write?”
“Onee-chan and I both wrote about cutting off Ryouya’s bad ties.”
The two of them showed me their katashiro. Reona had written that she wanted to sever all ties connecting to any obstacles around Ryouya Yagami. Riona had written that she wanted to cut all ties, past, present, and future, between Ryouya Yagami and anyone unworthy of him.
Yeah… That was way more intense than I expected. Honestly, with stuff like that written about me, I could only imagine my isolation getting even worse.
Thinking that, I got in line for the Enkiri Enmusubi Stone. Just like at the main shrine earlier, there was a pretty long line, so we passed the time with more chatting.
“Alright, I’ll go first.”
“Okay, good luck.”
“I’ll be watching Ryouya’s brave moment closely.”
Holding the katashiro, I passed through the hole from the front of the stone to the back, and then again from the back to the front. Passing through from the front cut off bad ties, and going back through from the rear was supposed to bind good ties. Finally, you pasted the katashiro onto the stone to complete the prayer.
By the way, the hole was just barely big enough for an adult to squeeze through, so it was pretty tight. Even for someone small like me, it felt like a tight fit. Bigger people must have had a tough time with it. Reona went through next without any problem, but when it was Riona’s turn, something unexpected happened. Her skirt got caught on something and almost flipped up dramatically.
“Whoa, that was a close one.”
“Riona, that was dangerous.”
“…Thanks, Ryouya.”
I somehow managed to stop a public disaster just in time, preventing her panties from being flashed to everyone. Just like what Reona sometimes said, Riona’s clumsy side seemed to be alive and well. Seeing that unexpected side of usually cool and composed Riona gave me a little secret moment of “gap moe,” but I kept that to myself. After all, if I said anything out loud, the two of them would absolutely tease me to death.
