ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After finishing our soft serve ice cream, we started moving again and arrived at our destination, the bamboo forest path. The atmosphere was a stark contrast to the bustling main street filled with shopping districts. A calm scene, far removed from the city’s noise, unfolded before us.
“I’ve seen this scenery many times on TV, but it really is nice in person, huh?”
“Yeah, this really feels like the quintessential Japanese landscape.”
“I love this vibe.”
The refreshing breeze swayed the bamboo leaves, and the pleasant sound and gentle dappled sunlight filtering through the trees were simply amazing. According to Reona, this place was once a villa for nobles during the Heian period, which made sense considering the breathtaking view.
However, since this was a popular tourist spot, it was quite crowded, and taking photos without people in the shot was a real challenge. If we wanted to get a nice picture, it might be better to aim for early morning when there are fewer people.
While I was thinking about this, the three of us were walking along the bamboo forest path when Reona, who had been using her phone, suddenly made a clearly exasperated expression.
“…Sorry, one of my friends called me, so please wait for a bit.”
“Take care.”
From her expression, it seemed like she wasn’t too excited about whatever the situation was, but I couldn’t help wondering what it was that made her get called out.
“Ryouya, are you curious about Onee-chan?”
“Well, yeah. When I saw her looking like that, of course I’d get curious.”
“Then let’s follow her secretly.”
“Huh? Is that really okay?”
“It’s fine, we’re one body, so Onee-chan’s words are my words. If I say it’s okay, then it’s okay.”
I felt a bit guilty about the suggestion that felt a bit like stalking, but since Reona had clearly given the green light, I decided to follow her. Keeping a reasonable distance, I followed along with Reona, my heart racing, hoping we wouldn’t be noticed. After a while, Reona stopped, so I watched from a little farther away, and a familiar-looking male student appeared.
Though we hadn’t really spoken much, he was the ace of the basketball club, a tall, handsome guy. Even I knew who he was. Seeing him, I immediately understood what was happening. He was probably going to confess to Reona. The bamboo forest path was known as a popular spot for confessions, so I was sure of it.
Given his impressive looks, I thought he would be a good match for Reona, but at the same time, my chest tightened with a sharp pain. Even though there was no possibility of Reona and I being a couple, I felt an overwhelming sense of frustration.
“Tsurugi-san, thank you for coming despite the sudden call.”
“Someone is waiting for me, let’s get to the point.”
“Then I’ll be direct… Will you go out with me?”
Just as I had predicted, the handsome basketball player confessed to Reona. Any normal girl would probably respond with joy, but Reona was different.
“I’m sorry. I appreciate your feelings, but I can’t do that.”
Reona rejected him outright, without even a hint of hesitation. I couldn’t help but feel confused as to why she rejected him, yet I also felt a strange sense of relief. I really was simple-minded. The rejected basketball player left with a disappointed expression, but he didn’t say anything rude, so he seemed to be a nice guy on the inside as well. But if even such a handsome guy could be rejected, I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of man could date Reona.
“Let’s go back to where we were earlier before Onee-chan notices.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
We left the spot and returned to where we had been earlier. After a while, Reona came back with a completely casual expression, as if nothing had happened. Someone like Reona, having probably been confessed to countless times, was likely used to it by now. Getting confessed to was hard to imagine for a loner like me, but if I were to be confessed to by a girl, I wouldn’t be able to stay calm.
“Sorry for the wait.”
“Welcome back. It’s okay, I wasn’t waiting that long.”
“I was having a nice chat with Ryouya.”
“I see. Well then, shall we get back to sightseeing?”
The three of us resumed walking along the bamboo forest path. Reona and I didn’t bring up the reason she was called away earlier, and in turn, she didn’t mention it either, so we all pretended like the confession had never happened.
However, after watching that confession earlier, I couldn’t help but realize once again that Reona, Ryouya, and I were from different worlds. I couldn’t help but wonder if it was alright for someone like me to stay with the two of them for much longer.

Chapter 82: Ryouya, if You Dare to Do That, We Will Never Forgive You
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
While still feeling all muddled inside, I finished the rest of our stroll around Arashiyama and moved to the hotel where we would be staying for the night. Needless to say, the rooms were separated by gender, so there was no way I would end up sharing a room with Reona or Riona.
At the moment, I had finished dinner and was soaking in the large public bath. Since we had been walking around nonstop since morning, the hot water seeped into my body and felt incredibly good.
“Hey, I heard Maeda from the basketball club confessed to Tsurugi-nee in Arashiyama and got rejected.”
“Seriously? Even he got rejected?”
While I was relaxing, I overheard this conversation between two guys coming from the washing area, which made it uncomfortable to stay here. I had just gotten in, give me a break.
“She’s always been a tough one to crack, and it looks like she still is.”
“Also, isn’t that guy who’s always hanging around the Tsurugi sisters kind of in the way?”
“Yeah, it’s hard to approach them when he’s always there.”
Apparently, that was how people around me saw me. I had gotten used to the usual stares, but hearing them talk about me behind my back like this really stung. The two of them seemed completely unaware that I was here and said whatever they pleased.
I had once asked Reona and Riona if I was bothering them by being with them, and they had told me I wasn’t, but hearing this made me start to think that my very existence was a nuisance to them after all. With the whole confession incident from earlier in the day weighing on me too, I became depressed and found myself wanting to be alone. Before I realized it, I had left the hotel.
Leaving the hotel was technically not allowed, so what I was doing was definitely against the rules, but since I was always alone anyway, I figured no one would even notice I was missing. I would just sneak back in before roll call.
“Man, this place is packed with couples.”
As I walked along the Kamo River, I noticed couples sitting spaced evenly along the riverside. This must be a popular spot for that sort of thing. Without thinking much about it, I just kept walking along the Kamo River, but after getting tired, I decided to sit by the river just like the couples around me.
At times like this, the sound of the river is strangely soothing.
Even though I was just sitting there absentmindedly watching the flow of the river, it was incredibly healing. Natural sounds really must be better for the body than artificial ones. As I sat there for a while, I suddenly felt the presence of someone behind me.
“Huh!?”
When I turned around, there were Reona and Riona standing there. I thought I had left without telling anyone, so how did they know where I was? It was almost as if they had planted a tracking device on me given how they were able to find me so accurately like this.
“Ryouya-kun, we finally found you. We were looking everywhere for you.”
“We got really worried when you disappeared.”
I had expected them to scold me, but there was none of that—instead, they looked genuinely worried. Reona and Riona sat down on either side of me, sandwiching me between them.
“Why did you sneak out of the hotel without telling us?”
“If you’re worried about something, you can tell your onee-chans.”
“I just… I just felt like I really live in a different world from you two.”
Ever since the day I saved them from the random attacker, we had been together all the time, but under normal circumstances, I never would have even had a proper conversation with them. A background character like me and popular girls like Reona and Riona… We were just that different.
“Is that what you were worrying about? You really didn’t have to worry about that.”
“From our perspective, it’s nothing at all.”
“But I can’t help feeling like I’m robbing you two of a lot of opportunities just by being around you two.”
If my presence was a burden to them, then it was only right for me to distance myself. That was the least I could do, even though I, a loner, had fallen for them.
“If being with Ryouya-kun means missing out on some opportunities, then Riona and I don’t need those opportunities.”
“We don’t even think of that as a loss.”
They both said it clearly, without a hint of hesitation. There was no doubt in my mind that they meant it sincerely. Their expressions were so serious that I couldn’t think otherwise.
“So if you’re thinking of leaving us for the sake of our happiness or something, we want you to absolutely stop that.”
“Ryouya, if you dare to do that, we will never forgive you.”
The look in Reona and Riona’s eyes as they said that was filled with a darkness like a black hole. If this were a manga or anime, their eyes would definitely have lost their highlights.
“Well, now that Ryouya-kun’s worries are cleared up, shall we head back to the hotel?”
“If we don’t get back soon, they’ll realize we snuck out.”
“Oh, shoot, you’re right. Roll call is coming up.”
We stood up and started walking back to the hotel. Compared to when I had run out, my heart felt a lot lighter, and I realized just how simple a person I really was.
“…Come to think of it, how did you even know where I was?”
“That’s a maiden’s secret.”
“If you turn back into Ryouka-chan for us, maybe we’ll tell you.”
They dodged the question, but I figured it was best not to push it any further, so even though I was curious, I decided not to ask.

Reona, Ryouya, and I
However, it’s written from the perspective of Ryouya, so it should be Riona as the second name instead.
