ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
It had been about ten days since I was hospitalized, and I was finally able to be discharged. I was heading back to school for the first time in a while, but even though I hadn’t been gone for two full weeks, it felt like I had been gone forever.
“I wonder if I’ll be okay in class…”
The school I attended, Amaki High, was reasonably competitive, and the classes moved fast, so I was seriously worried whether I could keep up with the class. Considering my grades were already slightly below average to begin with, missing nearly two weeks of school was pretty dangerous for me. If I wasn’t careful, I could be headed straight for failing grades.
As I walked the usual path to school while thinking about that, I spotted a familiar pair coming out of a nearby café. They were holding plastic cups with drinks inside, so they had probably stopped there before school.
“Ah, it’s Ryouya-kun. Good morning.”
“Good morning, Ryouya.”
“Good morning, Tsurugi-san… Both of you.”
I greeted them like that, but both of them made obvious displeased faces.
“I told you already, you can just call me and Riona without honorifics.”
“Ryouya, I demand a greeting do-over.”
“Sorry, sorry. Good morning, Reona and Riona. Better now?”
“Yeah. I will forgive you now.”
“Onee-chan and I are satisfied.”
Reona and Riona said that gleefully. Since they had come to visit me every single day after their first visit at the hospital, we’d become quite close by now. Hence why Reona had started calling me “Ryouya-kun,” and Riona just “Ryouya.” They had both asked me to call them without honorifics too, but I still felt uncomfortable and embarrassed, so I hadn’t gotten used to it yet.
To be honest, calling girls by their first names, and without honorifics at that, was something I felt terribly hesitant to do. But since they insisted so strongly like that, I just couldn’t say no to them.
“Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever run into you two on the way to school before. What’s up today?”
“Ah, I just felt like trying StellaBucks’ new seasonal drink this morning, so Riona and I made a little detour.”
“That’s why we’re still hanging around here this late, which is rare for us.”
I see. Unlike me, who always barely made it to school on time, Reona and Riona probably usually left early and arrived with time to spare. That would explain why I’d never run into them on the way before.
“Oh right, Ryouya-kun, today’s your first day back at school, right? Congratulations on getting discharged.”
“Thanks. I was out for a while, so I’m really not looking forward to everything I’ve got to catch up on. It’s super depressing.”
“Yeah, classes definitely moved forward while you were gone.”
“Exactly! That’s why I’m terrified of the final exams in July.”
The three of us were chatting while standing still, when I suddenly remembered that I’d been summoned to the staff room by my homeroom teacher. If we kept talking like this, I might be late, so I needed to wrap up the conversation soon.
“…I’ve been called in by the teacher this morning, so I’ll head off ahead of you.”
I said that to Reona and Riona and started to leave. Honestly, I wanted to go to school with them, but me—a Background Character B—walking to school alongside two main-character-tier girls at the top of the school caste… Yeah, no.
“I see. Then we’d better hurry.”
“Let’s get going.”
Apparently, Reona and Riona fully intended to walk to school with me. Realizing that I hadn’t been clear enough, I tried again.
“If we go together, people might get the wrong idea, right? So I think it’s better if we go separately.”
“We don’t mind if people misunderstand.”
“It doesn’t bother us at all. Or… Do you not want to go to school together with us, Ryouya?”
“I-it’s not that I don’t want to…”
“Then there’s no problem, is there?”
I tried to resist, but I couldn’t win against them. All I could do was nod. So the three of us started walking to school together, but the stares from people around us were palpable. I couldn’t relax at all.
In contrast, Reona and Riona looked totally unfazed. Well, I guess pretty girls like them were probably used to people staring at them.
“Ryouya, it’s your first day back in a while. Are you happy to be back at school?”
“Hmm, not really. I mean, classes have probably progressed a lot, and honestly I just feel super depressed. Plus, I’m a loner, so it’s not like there’s anyone waiting for me to return to school.”
If Reona or Riona had been out for a week and came back to school, everyone would welcome them with open arms. But for someone like me, who had no friends in class, the most I’d get is a “Oh right, you were gone.”
“Don’t worry. Riona and I will support you with that stuff.”
“No, no, it’s fine. I’ve got it covered.”
If Reona or Riona, who I had no prior connection with, suddenly started interacting with me at school, it would totally make me stand out in a bad way. As I was thinking about that, I noticed something odd about the two of them.
“What do you mean ‘you’ve got it covered’? Don’t tell me you’re planning to let some other girl take care of you?”
“I’m afraid we can’t agree to that.”
“W-why are you even bringing other girls into this!? I don’t even have guy friends, let alone a close girl friend!”
Feeling a pressure I couldn’t quite describe, I blurted that out, and instantly, the ominous aura around them vanished.
“Right? I mean, until recently, you didn’t have a single contact in your phone outside of your family.”
“Yeah, Ryouya’s a loner, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
“…Can you please not inflict serious emotional damage on me so nonchalantly like that?”
When someone actually said it out loud, I was forced to face the truth, and the fact hit me hard. After that, we kept up a bit of small talk as we continued on our way to school.
