We continued making our way around the food stalls. We were enjoying the festival and by the time we realized it, time passed within the blink of an eye and it was about time for the fireworks. The organizer of this festival would be launching the fireworks soon, so we laid out a sheet on the grass and sat down on it.
Since the girls had bought tickets for a reserved area in advance, it looked like we’d have a great view of the fireworks. Just as the pre-show announcements ended and the start time of the fireworks festival arrived, a single firework shot up into the night sky. That first one kicked off a barrage of fireworks, one after another, filling the sky with colorful blooms.
“Fireworks really are the best.”
“Yeah. Maybe because it’s been a while since I last saw one, I’m actually feeling kinda moved.”
“This is what a Japanese summer is all about.”
As we watched the bursts of color scatter across the sky and fade away, the three of us chatted like that. Fireworks really were something that made your heart race no matter how old you got.
“They’re really beautiful.”
“By the way, Ryouya-kun, which do you think is more beautiful—us or the fireworks?”
“Whoa?! What kind of question is that out of nowhere!?”
“I want to hear your answer, Ryouya.”
Why did she have to ask something like that out of the blue?
I panicked, but both Reona and Riona were looking at me with eyes full of expectation, so I had no choice but to answer.
“…Reona and Riona, I guess.”
“I see. So to Ryouya-kun, Riona and I are more beautiful than the fireworks.”
“I’ll never forget those words.”
It had taken me a lot of thought to come up with that answer, but now I was starting to feel like I’d picked the wrong one. No, if I had said “fireworks,” they probably would’ve gotten upset anyway, so that wasn’t the right answer either.
In other words, this was one of those questions where there was no right answer.
It seemed like the two of them were going to tease me about this for a while. As the three of us kept watching the fireworks together, before I knew it, an hour and a half had passed.
“Time really flew by, huh?.”
“Yeah, it barely feels like thirty minutes have passed.”
“It was my first time at the Kisarazu fireworks festival, but it was really fun.”
Feeling satisfied, we chatted like that while folding up the sheet we had spread on the grass. Since the crowd was full with people all leaving at once, it looked like it would be better to wait a bit before trying to move. So what I was thinking, but then Reona, who had been looking at her phone, suddenly raised her voice.
“Something kind of bad happened…”
“What is it all of a sudden?”
“Look at this.”
Reona showed me her phone screen, which displayed the status of the Uchibō Line, the train we were planning to take home. Apparently, there had been a personal injury accident, and the line had come to a halt. There was no estimate for when service would resume. It could be a while before the train could run again.
“…Seriously? That’s a real pain.”
“Yeah, with the trains stopped, the buses are probably going to be packed too, and we might not even be able to get on one.”
“If we try to go back by taxi, it’ll cost at least over twenty thousand yen.”
“That’s pretty expensive. Even if we split it between the three of us, that’s still a painful expense on our wallet.”
By train, it would only cost about two thousand yen per person, so even for all three of us combined, a taxi would be more than triple that.
“Relying on a bus we might not even get on is too risky… I guess our only choice is to take a taxi.”
“Oh! I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we just stay somewhere overnight and head home tomorrow?”
“Now that sounds like a great plan.”
“No, no, no. Think about it normally. That’s totally not okay at all!”
Riona agreed instantly with Reona’s suggestion, but there was no way I could go along with that so easily.
“Wait, did I say we’d all stay in the same room?”
“Wait, Ryouya? Were you planning to stay in the same room as us?”
“Th-That’s not what I meant…”
I had totally assumed it’d be one room, so I was at a loss for words.
I’d gotten so used to dealing with their unpredictable behavior that my sense of normal had clearly become warped. Yeah, under normal circumstances, it wouldn’t make sense at all for guys and girls who weren’t even dating to share a room.
“Well, anything other than staying with Ryouya-kun is out of the question.”
“Onee-chan and I are really kind after all. We’d never leave Ryouya out.”
Reona and Riona were just being their usual selves.
Please stop messing with a poor virgin’s heart like this.
“Wait a minute. Wouldn’t staying overnight somewhere actually be more expensive? I doubt there are any cheap places with rooms still available.”
“Oh, don’t worry. If we go to a love hotel, it won’t be too pricey.”
“Yeah, it’s around five thousand yen for all three of us to stay there.”
“That’s the last kind of place we should be staying at!”
Why the hell would that even cross their minds!? I couldn’t understand their thought process at all. No, actually… It wasn’t even a maybe—Reona and Riona definitely had a few screws loose in their heads.
“Then I’ll use the command I won earlier. Tonight, the three of us are staying at a love hotel.”
“I believe in you, Ryouya-kun. You’re not the kind of guy who’d break a promise.”
“…Fine.”
There was no way I could refuse under that kind of pressure, so I had no choice but to give in. Well, this would be the third time I’d stayed over wit the two of them, so maybe it’d be okay.
