While we were caught up in everything, two hours had already passed before we realized it. Since everyone was satisfied, we left the karaoke room.
“Hey, there’s a movie theater nearby. Let’s watch something together, the four of us?”
“Oh, I actually have a movie I wanted to see!”
“What’s it called?”
Since it was something Mio wanted to watch, it had to be a trendy romance film. It was probably the kind of movie someone like me—an introverted otaku—would never choose to see.
“It’s called Love Triangle.”
“Oh, I know that one. It’s been a hot topic in my class too.”
“I was curious about it as well.”
I didn’t recognize the title at all, but it seemed like Reona and Riona were familiar with it. For now, we paid the bill, left the karaoke place, and headed straight into the nearby theater. Apparently, the movie was about to start soon, so really, our timing couldn’t be better.
After buying our tickets from the automated machine, we lined up at the concession stand to grab some drinks. Then we headed into the theater and settled into our reserved seats.
“As expected, there are a lot of couples around us.”
“People like you, Onii-chan, would never come see this kind of movie anyway.”
“When you say it like that, it sounds like I’ll never get a girlfriend.”
“Do you actually think you will?”
“…Yeah, no. Not happening.”
–Sadly, I couldn’t see a future where someone like me doesn’t go through life with his age being equal to the number of years without a girlfriend. The more I thought about it, the more the couples around us started to annoy me. Honestly, I was in the mood to see every happy couple on the planet spontaneously combust.
“It’s okay. Poor, unsold Ryouya-kun can be adopted by me and Riona.”
“If we add Mio-chan in too, it’ll be perfect.”
“Hey, don’t talk like I’m going to be alone and ignored by everyone for the rest of my life.”
Also, don’t casually drag Mio into your nonsense.
At this rate, it wouldn’t be surprising if they really made her part of the Tsurugi family. After a while of watching trailers and commercials, the theater darkened and the movie began.
The first part of the film followed a plain high school girl protagonist as she somehow caught the interest of a pair of handsome twin transfer students, leading to a love triangle. In the middle, both twins aggressively pursued her at the same time, causing her a great deal of inner turmoil. After much agonizing, she ultimately chose the older twin, which led to a rift between the brothers. Though they reconciled in the final act and the movie ended on a so-called happy note, it didn’t feel satisfying to me.
Sure, I knew opinions would vary depending on the viewer, but personally, I sympathized more with the younger brother character, so the fact that he wasn’t chosen left me feeling a bit frustrated.
“I didn’t really like how it ended.”
“Yeah. It didn’t feel like a true happy ending.”
Apparently, Reona and Riona felt the same way I did.
“It seems like opinions are really split on that part. Even among my friends who saw it, their reactions were totally divided.”
“Yeah, I can see that happening.”
“For twins like us, maybe it’s because of our DNA or something, but we tend to want the same things, so this movie didn’t feel like something entirely unrelated to us at all.”
“The movie is giving a total twin-sibling vibes.”
As we walked toward the exit, we continued chatting about the movie. It seemed that Reona and Riona, being twins, had picked up on even more emotional nuances than I had.
“By the way, Reona, Riona. What do you two do when you both want the same thing but there’s only one?”
“If it’s something we can split, we divide it in half. If not, we just share it.”
“Yeah. That’s how we’ve always done it.”
“Huh, so you don’t fight? Mio and I used to argue about stuff like that all the time.”
I raised my voice a little in surprise after hearing their answer—mostly out of curiosity. I would’ve thought yearning for the same thing would definitely lead to arguments.
“Actually, when we were kids, we fought about it a lot.”
“Yeah. Mama would always get mad at us.”
“Really? I didn’t expect that.”
“That’s kind of surprising.”
I always imagined them as being close since they were little, so I couldn’t picture them fighting at all.
“But we eventually realized that if we were busy fighting, someone else could come in and take what we both wanted anyway.”
“Yeah, and since we’re identical twins, we started to think of ourselves as basically the same person.”
“What’s mine is hers, and what’s hers is mine. Once we reached that conclusion, we stopped fighting.”
I see, so that’s one way to look at it. It’s a perspective unique to identical twins—definitely different from the dynamic Mio and I have as ordinary siblings.
“That’s why if it were me and Riona in that movie, it wouldn’t have turned out like that.”
“Huh? Wait, don’t tell me…”
“We would both date the same person.”
Reona and Riona said something outrageous with completely serious expressions. They were clearly 100% serious about it. Which meant that whoever ended up dating either Reona or Riona would have to be in an openly acknowledged three-way relationship.
