ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“By the way, which open campuses did you go to?”
“Sahoda University, Aoyama University, and Heisei Academy University—those three.”
“All three schools were super stylish and had a great atmosphere, so it was a lot of fun.”
Yeah, every single one of those was a highly popular and competitive university. Once again, I was reminded that Reona and Riona lived in a completely different world from mine. As I silently sank into the deprecative thoughts, Riona spoke up.
“I’ll make sure you get into the university you want to go to, Ryouya, so just leave it to me.”
“I’ll support you with everything I’ve got too, so don’t worry.”
The two of them said that to me. I already knew how capable Riona was from the last final exams, so having her help was like having a hundred allies.
“So let’s all go to the same university together.”
“I want to spend all four years of college with you and Onee-chan, Ryouya.”
“…Wait, are you serious?”
I couldn’t help but blurt that out when the two of them suddenly said something like that.
“Hey Riona, did I say something weird?”
“I don’t think you said anything strange, Onee-chan.”
Reona and Riona both looked at me with puzzled expressions. It seemed they genuinely didn’t understand why I raised my voice.
“It just surprised me to hear you say we’d keep spending time together even after getting into college.”
“It’s weird that something so obvious would surprise you, Ryouya.”
“Are you still half-asleep or something?”
They looked completely serious—not joking or lying in the slightest. Which meant… Reona and Riona were seriously planning to go to the same university as me. I had a bunch of questions I wanted to ask, but just then, the shuttle bus arrived at the campus, so we got off the bus.
“The campus is bigger than I expected.”
“…Yeah, it’s a comprehensive university with everything on one campus.”
“For now, let’s head to the reception desk.”
Even though I was still feeling unsettled about what had just happened, I followed them toward the reception area.
“Hey. That girl’s seriously cute, isn’t she?”
“Totally. I’d love to spend my college life with someone like that.”
“They’re both really beautiful… Do you think they might be models or celebrities?”
“I could totally believe that.”
Just walking through campus, I could hear people saying things like that all over the place. Just like on the bus, we were drawing a lot of attention. Needless to say, a Background Character B like me was bound to receive death stares by walking beside them. They stared at me like I had murdered someone.
After checking in, we headed to the multipurpose hall to listen to the university overview.
“I can hear all kinds of different dialects around us.”
“Okayama University isn’t just popular in the Chugoku region after all. So this university also draws people from nearby places like Shikoku and the Kansai region.”
“I kind of envy them. We only speak standard Japanese.”
“Yeah, Kansai dialect sounds so cool.”
Born and raised in Tokyo, I didn’t have any kind of dialect. My mom, who was originally from Okayama Prefecture, apparently spoke in Okayama dialect as a kid, but since she went to college in Tokyo and has lived here ever since, she spoke in standard Japanese now.
After listening to the university’s presentation for nearly an hour, we started heading toward the mock classrooms. I was in the Economics Department, while Reona and Riona were in the Foreign Languages Department.
“Okay, Riona and I will go this way, so let’s meet up after the mock class.”
“Yeah, I’ll message you when I’m done.”
“See you later, Ryouya.”
We split up partway and headed to our respective mock class locations. The campus was pretty huge, so just moving between classes looked like it’d be a pain. I hadn’t even gotten accepted yet, and I was already thinking stuff like that.
◇◇◇
After meeting back up following the mock classes, we joined a campus tour and a one-on-one counseling session. Then, we were now eating lunch. The cafeteria had a bunch of options, and though we weren’t sure where to eat, we figured we might as well try the place labeled “popular” in the open campus guide.
“How was your mock class, Ryouya?”
“The Economics Department one was about stock investments, so it was actually pretty interesting.”
The mock class took place in a lecture hall that could probably fit hundreds of students. The atmosphere felt completely different from the small classrooms we were used to in high school. It felt really new and exciting. Though I imagined that sense of novelty would probably disappear pretty quickly once I actually became an actual college student.
“Our Foreign Languages Department mock class was entirely in English. The technical terms were really tough, and I didn’t understand a lot of it. But Riona seemed to understand everything.”
“I watch a lot of movies in English, so I could understand what they were talking about.”
Even Reona, who was a quarter and could handle everyday conversations in English with no problem, found the lecture difficult. It was clear to see that there was no way I’d survive something like that.
“But seriously, I was shocked at how many people were trying to exchange contact info with us right on our very first meeting.”
“It’s a pain having to turn everyone down every time. I wish they’d stop already.”
“Both me and Onee-chan are kind of troubled by it.”
During the campus tour and the counseling sessions, Reona and Riona were constantly being approached by high school students and university students who were acting as guides. Just in the past few hours, they’d already been asked for their contact info more times than you could count on one hand. And even though I—a guy—was with them, no one seemed to care at all. They probably didn’t even register someone like me in their line of sight.
“Man… If I were taller and ridiculously handsome, I wonder if girls would ask me to exchange my contact information with them too.”
Seeing how incredibly popular the two of them were, I couldn’t help but feel jealous and muttered that without thinking. If I were, like, 180 centimeters tall and absurdly good-looking, I bet swapping contact info with girls would be a breeze.
As I indulged in fantasies of a world where I was way cooler than I am now, I noticed the happy expressions completely disappear from Reona and Riona’s faces.
“…Ryouya, do you want to exchange contact info with girls?”
“What exactly do you plan to do with their contact info, Ryouya-kun…?”
“Are you thinking of doing something you can’t even tell me and Onee-chan?”
“If that’s the case, I don’t think we can let it slide.”
Their tone was the same as always, but their eyes weren’t smiling at all. I felt this overwhelming pressure like I was about to get eaten alive, and hurriedly opened my mouth.
“N-No, it was just a joke! I mean, even if I did exchange contact info with a girl, I wouldn’t even know what to talk about.”
“I see. Then that’s good then.”
“Had Ryouya-kun made that kind of mistake, I would’ve given you a severe punishment.”
Hearing what I said, the two of them returned to their usual mood. I wasn’t entirely sure what just happened, but I had a feeling I’d nearly stepped on a massive landmine. Better keep my mouth shut from now on.
After lunch, we continued participating in various programs at the open campus. Reona and Riona kept getting hit on constantly, but they brushed all of them off.
Please… Stop looking at me like I had murdered someone.
