ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Several days had passed since I was stabbed while protecting the Tsurugi sisters. I had seriously thought I might die, but luckily enough, it seemed my life wasn’t in danger.
“Well, getting stabbed by a random attacker doesn’t exactly count as good luck though.”
I was told that if the knife had damaged any of my organs, I might not have made it. That honestly gave me chills. Apparently, the culprit had been a drug addict. That would explain the erratic behavior.
“…Still, this is so boring.”
Just to be safe, I was admitted to the hospital for a while, but since I had to stay in my room most of the time, I was insanely bored. On top of that, I didn’t have any friends who’d bother to come visit. The only people I could expect to see were my dad, mom, and my younger sister Mio, who was three years younger than me.
While I was thinking about that and reading a light novel in bed, there was a sudden knock at the door.
“Come in.”
Thinking it was just a nurse, I was surprised to see the two people who walked in. It was none other than the Tsurugi sisters.
“Sorry for barging in like this together. But Riona and I just really wanted to thank you in person, Yagami-kun.”
“You saved us. Thank you so much for helping us back then.”
“You came all the way to visit me? Well, I’m just glad you two are safe.”
Hearing their direct words of gratitude made me flustered, and I couldn’t help but smile as I replied to them.
I mean, what guy wouldn’t be happy to have two beautiful girls visit him in the hospital?
“I’m just relieved to see you’re doing well, Yagami-kun. We’ve been so worried.”
“Both Onee-chan and I couldn’t stop worrying about you.”
“Well yeah, if a classmate died because of you, you’d never be able to sleep at night.”
“Had you died, Onee-chan and I wouldn’t have been able to forgive ourselves.”
The moment she said that, I had the strange illusion that something dark and viscous was seeping out of their bodies—but it was probably just my imagination. In any case, it seemed like they’d been really worried about me.
“I’m just in for observation now, and as you can see, I’m up and about. They said there won’t be any lasting damage on my body either, so don’t worry.”
“I see. I’m glad to hear that.”
“We hated the thought of you suffering because of us.”
After hearing what I said, the two of them clearly looked more at ease. They must have really been concerned about my condition.
“How’d you even know which hospital I was in?”
“Oh. We asked your family.”
“We told them we wanted to thank you directly.”
“I see.”
After that, the three of us chatted. Even though I shared a class with the older Tsurugi sister, I’d barely spoken to her before, so I was pretty nervous at first. But thanks to their relaxed vibe, I found myself talking naturally with them before I knew it.
“Visiting hours are almost over, so we should get going.”
“…It’s over already?”
We only had thirty minutes of visiting time, but it felt more like five. I guess that meant I was really enjoying myself. I felt kind of sad about it. This might be the last time I ever talked to them.
But honestly, the Tsurugi sisters were way out of my league. They were the kind of girls who’d never normally associate with a background character like me. I decided to just treat this as a lucky one-time miracle, like winning the lottery.
Just as I was thinking that, the younger sister reached her hand out to me.
“Hey, mind if I borrow your phone for a sec?”
“I don’t mind, but… What for?”
“I want to register my and Onee-chan’s contact info on your phone.”
“Huh!?”
That was so unexpected I totally forgot I was in a hospital room and ended up raising my voice in shock. If I hadn’t been in a private room, I’d probably have gotten some dirty looks from the other patients.
It seemed I was about to experience something I never thought would happen—a once-in-a-lifetime moment: exchanging contact information with a girl.
“…Yagami-kun, do you not want to?”
“If you don’t mind, we’d like to be added.”
“N-No! That’s not it at all. Here, go ahead. Add it.”
“Thanks.”
I had never intended to say no, but seeing the two of them look so sad hit me with an intense sense of guilt. I unlocked my phone and handed it to the younger Tsurugi sister. She started operating my phone at an incredible speed.
“Okay, I added both me and Onee-chan’s contact to your contacts and LIME.”
When I looked at the returned phone, sure enough, both Reona Tsurugi and Riona Tsurugi were added to my phonebook and to my LIME friend list.
“Thanks. This is my first time ever exchanging contact info with a girl, so I’m kinda happy.”
” Oooh… So Riona and I were your first, huh?”
“We stole your first time.”
The two of them looked visibly happy, a complete change from earlier. For a moment, they even looked a little too excited, but it was probably just my imagination again. Still, if they were exchanging contact info with me, maybe they planned to keep in touch?
“We’ll come visit again after school tomorrow, so look forward to it.”
“See you tomorrow.”
With that, the two of them left my hospital room. I sat frozen for a while, unable to process what had just happened, then finally started to wrap my head around it.
“…So exchanging contact info with a girl isn’t just an urban legend after all.”
Until now, the only female contacts in my phone were my mom and my little sister, Mio. And now, two unbelievably gorgeous girls—the Tsurugi sisters—had been added to my contact list. It was so unreal, I even started to wonder if I was dreaming. But when I pinched my cheek and it hurt, I figured this wasn’t a dream after all.
Still buzzing from excitement, I picked up the light novel I’d been reading earlier. From the outside, I probably looked like I was in a seriously good mood. I kept reading for a while, but then a notification sound made me glance at my screen—and something felt off.
“Huh? My phone’s battery has dropped this much already…?”
I had charged my phone to over ninety percent earlier, but now it was down to about fifty. I hadn’t touched my phone at all since the girls added their contacts, so why did the battery drain this fast?
“..Maybe the battery’s just getting old. I have been using this phone for a while now. Might be time for an upgrade.”
After considering the possibilities and not coming up with anything else, that was the only plausible conclusion I could come up with.
