ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Want to have lunch before we play?”
“Yeah. That way we can probably play longer. Let’s do that.”
“Since we’re going swimming after, I want something light.”
“Right. It’d suck to feel sick in the pool.”
As we chatted like that, we headed for the restaurant inside the facility. Incidentally, since most schools had already started summer vacation, Tokyo Aqua Land was packed with people. Even after we wrote our names on the waitlist at the restaurant entrance, it took forever to be called, so the pool was probably just as crowded. After a while, we were finally shown to a table, and the three of us all ordered zaru soba.
“By the way, Ryouya-kun, what are you planning to do about that open campus report assignment?”
“Don’t bring up depressing stuff right before we play.”
“Sorry, sorry.”
This summer break, we had the extremely annoying assignment of attending an open campus and writing a report about it. Apparently, this assignment was introduced a few years ago because students from Amaki High had a low attendance rate for open campuses.
The school probably created the assignment to encourage more students to go, but writing the report was a pain, and honestly, I wished they’d just drop it. I felt like complaining to the upperclassmen who slacked off in the past and caused this.
“I’m thinking of going to Okayama University for the open campus.”
“That’s pretty far from Tokyo. It’s in Okayama, right?”
“Why that university, though?”
“Oh, right, I don’t think I told you, but my grandma lives in Okayama. So for me, it’s the next most familiar place after Tokyo.”
I explained that to Reona and Riona, who both looked puzzled at the mention of Okayama. Well, my grandma actually lived in Kurashiki, which was the city right next to Okayama, not Okayama City itself. Incidentally, Okayama University was a comprehensive university with multiple departments and was apparently one of the most popular public universities in the Chūgoku–Shikoku region.
“Ohh, so that’s why.”
“That makes sense.”
“Yeah, and while I’m there for the open campus, I’m also planning to drop by my grandma’s place because it’s been a while since I last visited.”
Since Okayama was pretty far from Tokyo. It wasn’t a place I could visit casually. The last time I went was during Obon last year—so about a year ago.
“So, sorry, but I won’t be able to hang out with you two before or after the open campus.”
“Oh, it’s fine. Riona and I are going with you.”
“No matter where you go, whether through fire or water, Onee-chan and I will follow after you.”
“Wait, wait… I’m planning to stay overnight, you know…”
I raised my voice at Reona and Riona, who were casually assuming they’d tag along. If it were a day trip, that’d be one thing, but staying overnight with the two of them was definitely pushing it.
“Actually, staying overnight sounds even more fun.”
“Still, spending the night together as a boy and girls is kind of…”
“What’s the difference when you’ve done it once or twice?”
Yeah, it didn’t seem like either of them had any intention of backing down. I had a strong feeling that if we kept this up, we’d just go in circles, so I decided to drop the topic for now.
After finishing lunch, we finally got ready to head to the main event of the day—the pool. We bought our tickets at the vending machine, completed the check-in at reception, and made our way to the changing rooms.
“Okay. After I finish changing into my swimsuit, I’ll wait for you two at the pool entrance.”
“Alright. See you soon, Ryouya-kun.”
“We’ll head there right after we change into our swimsuits too.”
After parting ways in front of the changing rooms, I went into the men’s locker room and started changing into the swimsuit I took out of my backpack. The changing room was pretty crowded, so even finding an available locker was a bit of a struggle.
“…Everyone’s got great bodies.”
Seeing the muscular builds of the high school and college guys changing around me, I muttered that under my breath. With my current height of 167 centimeters and weight of 55 kilos, I had a pretty slim build. In fact, I was definitely on the skinny side.
“…Maybe I should start training seriously and build more muscle.”
Since my height was already below average for a Japanese guy, I figured I’d better at least bulk up a bit to look more solid. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do much about my height anymore. The only thing I could was build my muscle up.

Chapter 27: Yeah, as You Can See, We’re Totally Fine
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
As I was showering and heading toward the pool entrance, I realized I didn’t have my goggles.
“I must’ve left them in the locker room. It’s a pain to go back after showering, but I guess I have to.”
Since neither of the girls had arrived at our meeting spot yet, I figured I still had some time. I went back to the locker room and retrieved the goggles from my backpack. As I started walking toward the pool entrance again, I began to hear a heated exchange between a few guys and girls.
“I’ve told you over and over. I’m here with someone. Neither I nor Riona have any intention of hanging out with you.”
“Seriously, stop being so persistent.”
“Aw, come on. Just ditch that guy and come hang out with us. We’ll show you a good time, I promise.”
“Yeah, seriously. A guy who keeps cute girls like you waiting can’t be anything but a loser.”
Apparently, Reona and Riona were being hit on by a pair of guys who looked like university students. With bleached hair and multiple piercings in their earlobes, they had the exact look of typical sleazy playboys. Normally, I would’ve avoided getting involved with guys like that, but it was obvious the girls were uncomfortable, so I decided to step in.
“Excuse me. Could you stop hitting on Reona and Riona?”
“Wait, don’t tell me… This guy is the one you were waiting for?”
“No way. There’s no way it’s this lame-looking guy. He’s probably just some random dude playing the hero.”
“Yeah, no chance someone this pathetic is your boyfriend.”
As soon as they saw me, the two of them started sneering and saying whatever they wanted.
These guys really aren’t worth dealing with.
I took Reona and Riona’s hands and tried to walk past them toward the poolside, but they stepped in our way and blocked our path. I didn’t think they’d actually resort to violence in such a public place, but being bothered this persistently was starting to become a pain.
“You can leave if you want, but don’t try to take those two hotties with you.”
“Wait, hang on. What’s up with this guy’s back?”
“Whoa, seriously? It looks like he’s got some kind of scar or something. Don’t show us gross stuff like that.”
One of the guys had moved behind me and called out when he saw my back, and the other joined in, mocking me. The moment they spoke, I felt a sharp chill, like the temperature around us had suddenly dropped.
“…Hey. What did you just say? I thought I heard you call Ryouya-kun’s scar gross or dirty.”
“B-but we’re just saying what’s true, right?”
“Y-yeah.”
Faced with Reona’s demon-like expression, the two faltered. But even then, they still tried to act tough. That was, until they saw Riona’s face. She looked as expressionless as ever, but her eyes held a darkness so deep and chilling it felt like they could swallow you whole. It was a kind of fear that words couldn’t quite capture. If a small child had seen her at that moment, they probably would’ve burst into tears.
“Ryouya’s scar is something he got while risking his life to protect me and Onee-chan. I don’t care who you are, but if you dare speak ill of that, I will never forgive you.”
The instant Riona spoke those words, both guys began trembling. They looked like helpless prey cornered by predators. For a second, I honestly thought Reona and Riona might go after them. But fortunately, a burly male staff member from the pool, likely alerted by the commotion, arrived before that could happen.
The sleazy pair were promptly escorted away. They looked completely defeated and didn’t even try to resist.
“You two okay?”
“Yeah, as you can see, we’re totally fine.”
“Thanks, Ryouya. It really meant a lot that you tried to help us.”
The two of them had returned to their usual calm, gentle selves, like nothing had happened. It was hard to believe they’d been furious moments ago.
One thing’s for sure: I definitely should never make Reona or Riona mad. Especially Riona.
She gave off such an intense aura that it honestly felt more intimidating than when I faced that random attacker before.
“Well, that was an unexpected mess to start things off, but let’s finally go enjoy the pool together.”
“Yeah, let’s have lots of fun today.”
“I can’t wait to play in the pool.”
The three of us walked side-by-side toward the poolside. Since the earlier scene had drawn quite a bit of attention, it was unlikely that anyone else would try to hit on Reona and Riona again today.
