ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After a little while, the fifth period ended without issue, and we entered the break time. Once sixth period PE was over, the day’s classes would be done, so I felt a little more at ease.
PE had continued with volleyball, just like last week, but the moment I tried to toss the ball during a practice match, I jammed my finger badly.
Maybe it was because I’d been too caught up in my thoughts to focus on the game. I headed for the infirmary, but at the entrance, I ran into a familiar face.
“Ryouya, what happened?”
“Actually, I was playing volleyball in PE and totally jammed my finger. What about you, Riona?”
“I pricked my finger with a needle during sewing in home economy class, so I came to get disinfectant and a bandage.”
As she said that, Riona showed me her index finger. It was indeed slightly red. I never pictured Riona making mistakes like that, so honestly, it was a bit surprising. We went inside for the time being, but no one was there.
“Looks like the school nurse isn’t in.”
“Maybe they had to go somewhere for something.”
“Who knows when they’ll be back, so let’s just treat ourselves.”
For now, I rummaged through the shelves and pulled out some athletic tape and a wound care pad.
“Ryouya, give me your finger. I’ll tape it for you.”
“Nah, it’s fine. I can do it myself.”
“I want to do it for you, Ryouya. Am I not allowed to do that?”
She looked me in the eyes, and I couldn’t bring myself to say no, so I let her tape it for me. As Riona wrapped the tape around my finger, I asked her something that had been on my mind.
“I always thought you were the type to handle everything perfectly, but even you can make mistakes, huh?”
“I’m actually kind of a klutz.”
“Huh, really? That’s pretty surprising.”
“Onee-chan is better at that kind of stuff.”
While we were talking like that, she finished taping my finger. She was so efficient that I wondered if she was used to this.
“Alright, now it’s your turn, Ryouya.”
“Yeah, though I’m just sticking a pad on your finger.”
I gently took Riona’s hand and placed the wound care pad on her index finger. Holding her slender, pale finger like that made me feel kind of weird, but I kept that to myself.
“Since we’re here, want to lie down on the bed and rest a bit?”
“That’d be overdoing it for just a jammed finger, so I’ll pass.”
“If we got into bed together like this, it’d become a memory we’d never forget for the rest of our life.”
“Wait, wait! No way! That’s definitely not okay!”
Riona said something outrageous, and I instinctively snapped back at her. A guy and a girl getting into bed together in the school infirmary was something straight out of an erotic manga—there was no way that would happen in real life.
“Thanks for the great reaction.”
“…You just toyed with my fragile male heart.”
“I’d feel bad sneaking ahead of Onee-chan like that.”
Riona spoke with her usual cool expression, but for a moment, she looked like a mischievous child who had just pulled off a prank. After that exchange, I parted ways with Riona and returned to the gym.
Class was almost over, so it was cleanup time. I helped out a bit, then changed clothes in the locker room and headed back to the classroom. The moment I stepped inside, I realized something was off. The atmosphere was strange. A lot of classmates were clearly directing their hostility at me, but I had no idea why.
“Yagami, did you steal it?”
“…Huh?”
“I’m asking if you stole my wallet.”
The one confronting me with a harsh tone was one of the more extroverted girls in class, Misuzu Shirogane. She seemed extremely agitated, and her expression clearly showed anger.
“Hold on, I don’t get why I’m being suspected here…”
“Everyone is saying you’re suspicious. How do you explain that?”
“What exactly are they basing that on?”
When I voiced that question, someone else in the class spoke up.
“Yagami was the only one not in PE, right? He probably took it then.”
“He pretended to go to the infirmary, but he must’ve stolen it instead.”
I see, the fact that I stepped out of the gym during PE made me look suspicious. But I had an alibi—I was with Riona in the infirmary at the time. I explained that, but it didn’t seem to clear the doubts of my classmates at all.
Sadly, I had so little trust in this class that no one believed me. At first, it was just vague suspicion, but now the atmosphere was starting to shift toward assuming I was the culprit.
Honestly, this was a really bad turn of events. Of course, I wasn’t the one who did it, so no matter how much they investigated, they wouldn’t find any evidence—but that alone wouldn’t be enough to prove my innocence. Until now, only a few people had been suspicious, but from here on out, it looked like the entire class started treating me like a criminal.

Chapter 23: See? I Told You So
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Just when I thought all hope was lost, Reona—who hadn’t been seen until now—finally returned to the classroom.
“Huh? Why’s everyone so gloomy? Did something happen?”
“Reona, listen to this. Yagami stole my wallet!”
“What? Ryouya-kun did? I just can’t believe he’d do something like that.”
After hearing Shirogane-san’s accusation, Reona responded with that. Then Shirogane-san, still visibly agitated, began speaking again.
“But based on circumstantial evidence, it can only be Yagami!”
“…I have a question though. Misuzu, are you sure your wallet was actually stolen? Isn’t there a chance you just put it somewhere different than usual?”
“There’s no way that… Wait!?”
With a look of disbelief on her face, Shirogane-san started rummaging through her belongings. The moment she opened her handbag, she froze.
“…It’s here.”
“See? I told you so.”
Immediately, Shirogane-san looked deeply embarrassed. Thanks to Reona, the misunderstanding about me was cleared up, and it seemed my innocence had been proven. I thought this would be the end of it—until Reona kept talking.
“Why did everyone just decide Ryouya-kun was the culprit and try to run with that idea in the first place?”
Reona radiated an overwhelming aura of intimidation throughout the classroom, and not a single classmate dared to speak. It was like a group of frogs being stared down by a snake.
“If no one’s going to answer, then I’ll do it for you. You all just didn’t like that Ryouya-kun was getting along with me and Riona, right?”
At those words, some of the classmates visibly contorted their faces in discomfort. No doubt, she had hit the nail on the head.
“Since we’re here, let me just say this. The reason Riona and I became close with Ryouya-kun is because he risked his life to save us from a random attacker who almost killed us.”
“What?! Seriously!?”
That outburst triggered a wave of murmuring among the class, but Reona ignored them and continued speaking.
“That’s why Riona and I are incredibly grateful to Ryouya-kun and if any of you try to publicly shame him again like you did today… I promise you’ll be in for a world of pain.”
As she said that, Reona emitted an almost demonic pressure from her body. She looked like a wrathful warrior. Needless to say, that day’s closing homeroom felt like a funeral, and the homeroom teacher—who had no idea what was going on—was visibly perplexed by the situation in the classroom.
◇◇◇
The weekend flew by, and finally, the final exams were upon us. Over Saturday and Sunday, I had Reona and Riona drilling me with study sessions, but I still felt uneasy. Maybe that was why I woke up earlier than usual.
“…It’s only five. I should try to sleep a bit more.”
I checked the time on the digital clock next to my bed and started drifting off again. But not long after, I woke up feeling strangely cramped.
“Why does my bed feel smaller than usual…?”
Still half-asleep, my brain wasn’t working properly, but I noticed two large lumps under the covers.
“…No way.”
Nervously pulling the blanket back, I found exactly what I expected—Reona and Riona, both asleep. They had once again snuck into my room like it was nothing. If the genders were reversed, I could probably be arrested for this.
“Hey, wake up.”
“Morning, Ryouya-kun.”
“…Is it morning already?”
When I called out to them, the two lifted their upper bodies just slightly. They were incredibly relaxed for people who had just woken up—on my bed.
“So why exactly are you two sleeping under my blanket?”
“Oh, we came to wake you up, but you looked so comfy sleeping that it made us sleepy too.”
“So Onee-chan and I decided to join you.”
“You’re kidding me, right? This is way too ridiculous.”
I muttered that to myself as I looked at the carefree Reona and the still-drowsy Riona. As the two slowly sat up in bed, I suddenly panicked.
“Wait, hold on! Why are you both in your underwear!?”
“Well, sleeping in our uniforms would wrinkle them.”
“And that would’ve looked sloppy, so we took them off.”
“Just… Please, put on some clothes already!”
The shock sobered me up instantly. Seriously, how could they be so casual about standing around in their underwear in front of a guy? Then again, I remembered how they barged in naked during the last sleepover, so maybe this was nothing new after all. A little while later, we headed off to school. Since it was the first day of finals, we left home a bit earlier than usual, so we’d likely get there with time to spare.
“Once this is over, summer vacation’s right around the corner. Gotta hang in there.”
“Yeah. I just need to make sure I don’t get any failing grades.”
“You won’t. I taught you, after all. There’s no way you’re going to fall, Ryouya.”
“Yeah, you’ll be fine.”
While chatting like that, we arrived at school. I used the time before morning homeroom to do one last review. By the way, the classroom was a bit tense because of the upcoming test, but otherwise, it felt normal. There was one big difference, though.
“No one’s even making eye contact with me… Yeah, this has gotta be because of what happened last Friday.”
It was obvious. My classmates were going out of their way to avoid me. I had become the living embodiment of ‘don’t poke the sleeping god.’
“Whatever. I was a loner to begin with, so it’s fine.”
I muttered to myself and kept quietly reviewing until homeroom started, and the homeroom teacher walked into the room.
“Good morning, everyone. As you all know, today’s the first day of finals. Do your best and don’t give up until the end. Now, a few announcements…”
With that, the teacher began going over a few notices. Then we moved to our assigned seats based on student numbers and waited for the test to begin. As soon as the chime rang signaling the start, I focused and began solving the problems. Fifty minutes passed in the blink of an eye. I was about to head to the bathroom before the next test when Reona came up to me.
“Ryouya-kun, how was physics?”
“Pretty good, actually. A lot of the questions were similar to the ones Riona taught me, so I felt pretty confident.”
At least for physics, I was sure I’d avoided failing. As I thought about that, Reona beamed happily.
“That’s great. Keep up the good work on the rest of them, okay?”
Saying that, Reona returned to her group of friends. In the end, I did manage to avoid failing the finals, but I wouldn’t find that out until later.
