ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
It had been six days since Reona and Riona came over to stay, and now it was right before the end-of-term exams. The actual exams would begin on Monday next week, and the atmosphere in the classroom was more tense than usual.
Ever since we had gone out to play at Tokyo Inclusion Square last Saturday, Riona had been helping me study, and I was scheduled to spend most of the upcoming weekend—starting tomorrow—with her as well. Thanks to Riona tutoring me over the past several days, I had made up for most of the time I lost during my hospital stay. If I kept up this pace, I was pretty sure I could avoid failing.
“If you hadn’t been here, Riona, I definitely would’ve lost part of my summer break. Seriously, thank you.”
“It’s nice being praised by Ryouya, huh?”
“I’m happy I could help Ryouya.”
Hearing what Reona and I said, Riona responded with a faintly pleased expression. People often assumed Riona was expressionless, but in reality, she just had a harder time showing her emotions than most people. Lately, I had started to understand her expressions a little better. Not that it needed saying, but Reona, being her identical twin, could apparently read Riona’s expressions perfectly.
“Oh, right! Let’s have a little celebration after the exams are over!”
“I’m with you, Onee-chan.”
“Isn’t it a bit too early to talk about celebration, though?”
I interjected at the overly eager suggestion from Reona and Riona—even though the exams hadn’t even started yet. Reona then opened her mouth with an excited expression on her face.
“If there’s something fun waiting afterward, won’t that make you even more motivated?”
“Hmm.. True. You’ve got a point.”
It was definitely true that having something to look forward to after the exams could help boost our motivation. Well, there was the risk that scoring a failing grade would ruin everything, but still.
“Alright then, it’s decided! We can talk about the details later.”
“Okay, got it.”
“That works for me.”
“Now I’m already looking forward to it!”
Hearing Riona and me agree, Reona nodded in satisfaction. Then, the three of us stood up from the steps we were sitting on and started heading back to the classroom.
“I’m going to hit the bathroom before going back.”
“Got it. We’ll head back first.”
“See you later, Ryouya.”
To be honest, I didn’t really need to go to the bathroom. I just wanted to avoid walking into the classroom with Reona, because there was a good chance our classmates would start whispering about us. Actually, even if I didn’t go in with Reona, they’d probably still whisper. Either way, I had been attracting way too much attention over the past few days.
The more I got along with Reona and Riona, the more unwanted attention I drew. But I didn’t think either of them meant any harm, so I couldn’t bring myself to treat them coldly. If things kept going like this, something was bound to happen, and I really wanted to do something about it—but I couldn’t come up with a good solution. While I was lost in thought and purposely delaying my return to the classroom, a new problem arose.
“Huh? Where’s my English textbook…?”
After finishing in the bathroom and returning to class, I was getting ready for the post-lunch English lesson—but no matter where I looked, I couldn’t find my textbook.
“…Did I forget it?”
Now that I thought about it, I had taken it out of my backpack last night to do some prep, so I might’ve left it at home. Realizing that, I started to panic. This was bad. I didn’t have any friends who would lend me their textbook, being a loner and all. Hence why I had always been extra careful about this kind of thing, but it looked like I finally screwed up. Without a textbook, I wouldn’t be able to follow the lesson at all.
“This is bad… What do I do…?”
I considered coming clean to the teacher about forgetting my book, but that would probably hurt my participation grade. I was already at a disadvantage because of my hospital stay, and I didn’t want to make things worse. As I sat there, panicking alone, Reona spoke up.
“Hey, Ryouya-kun. You look kind of troubled.. Did something happen?”
“…Actually, I think I forgot my English textbook.”
“Do you have anyone you could borrow it from, by any chance?”
“As if a loner like me has someone who’d lend me their book.”
I answered Reona’s question like that. Saying it out loud made me feel incredibly pathetic, but it was the truth, and I had no choice but to accept it.
“I see. Then, how about I go borrow one from Riona for you? Her class had English this morning, so I’m sure she has her textbook.”
“Wait, seriously!? I’m in deep trouble here, so can I really ask you to do that?”
“Sure! Just wait here for a bit. I’ll head over to Riona’s class and grab it real quick.”
Leaving those words behind, Reona rushed out of the classroom. In my current situation, she was nothing short of a goddess. Of course, our classmates saw that whole exchange, and a few of them looked visibly annoyed at me. Well, it wasn’t surprising—there were always people who didn’t like seeing Reona and me get along.
Still, I was lucky it was just the English textbook I forgot. If it had been my gym clothes for the sixth period, that would’ve been a total disaster. Even though Riona and I were about the same height, there’s no way I could borrow something like that from her.
The gym teacher was the strict, nitpicky type, so if I’d told him I forgot my gym clothes, I’d probably get chewed out in front of everyone. As I was thinking about that, Reona returned to the classroom with a textbook in hand.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. I borrowed it from Riona. She said it’s fine as long as you return it after school.”
“Thank you. Seriously, you saved me.”
“No problem! Be sure to thank Riona later too, okay?”
With a smile, Reona handed me the textbook and then went back to her seat. Right after that, the bell rang, and class began. Riona’s textbook had all sorts of colorful highlights that made it really easy to read.
So this is the secret to her staying at the top of the grade, huh?
Even so, I doubted I could get first place even if I copied her methods exactly, which only proved how much of Riona’s success came from her own innate talent as well.
