Chapter 2: There’s No Way I Could Just Leave Riona Behind and Run, Right?

After that, I left the shopping mall and began heading home. It seemed I had stayed longer than I thought. The sky was already dyed with the colors of evening.

Since the shopping mall was located right in front of the station, the area was pretty crowded. It was filled with people who looked like they were either just getting out of club activities or coming back from work. Once I got home, I figured I’d lie down on my bed and read the light novel I just bought.

Weekend homework could easily be done on Sunday, so I’d push it off until then. I thought to myself while standing at the crosswalk waiting for the signal when a loud scream suddenly erupted nearby.

“Kyahhhh!!”

I turned toward the direction of the voice and saw a man, dressed entirely in black with his hood up, who looked a little older than me. He was slashing a woman’s arm with a knife. Whether he was drunk or high on some dangerous drug, I couldn’t tell, but he was clearly not acting normal. The woman’s scream acted like a trigger, and in an instant, chaos erupted.

The place fell into a complete panic, and I had no idea when I might be attacked too. If I didn’t escape quickly, there was even a chance I could be killed by this guy.

“D-Don’t come any closer!?”

But then, I heard a familiar voice nearby. Even though my life was in danger, I instinctively stopped in my tracks.

When I turned toward the voice, I saw none other than Riona Tsurugi, the girl whose pencil case I had picked up earlier, along with her older sister, Reona Tsurugi. It seemed like the two of them had also gotten caught up in this mess.

“R-Riona, get up, quickly!?”

“…Sorry, my legs gave out and I don’t think I can stand. Forget about me, just run away, Onee-chan.”

“There’s no way I could leave you behind and run!”

It looked like the younger sister had frozen up and couldn’t move. And to make matters worse, the man didn’t miss that. Still acting strangely, he locked onto the two sisters as his next targets. While they were being targeted, I could have run away. In a situation like this, even if I abandoned them, I doubted anyone would blame me.

“Someone, please… Help Riona…”

But I heard that faint, very frail voice coming to my ears. There was no way I could bring myself to choose the option of abandoning them. If I wasn’t careful, today could end up being the day I died—but if I ran away here, I knew I’d regret it for the rest of my life.

Even if I ended up dying, saving two beautiful girls would be an epic way to go out. With that thought in mind, I hurled my entire body sideways and tackled the man just as he was about to swing his knife down.

“…Good, I made it in time, somehow.”

The two of them looked at me like I was some kind of savior, but it was way too soon to be relieved. The man still hadn’t said a single word, but after being knocked down, he was clearly enraged. Once he regained his balance, he charged straight at me.

I barely managed to dodge his wild swings and used my bag as a shield to block him, but I wasn’t going to last much longer. Still, it looked like I’d bought enough time. Police officers, having responded to the emergency call, finally arrived on the scene.

“This is the police! Drop your weapon immediately and don’t resist!”

Everyone must have thought that would finally calm him down. But unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Realizing things had turned against him, the man suddenly shifted his target again. This time, toward the Tsurugi sisters, with the younger one still sitting frozen on the ground.

This is bad.

Acting purely on instinct, I threw myself between them and the man. In that moment, a searing pain shot through my back.

“GGAHHHAAAA!?”

The pain of being stabbed in the back with a knife was far beyond anything I could’ve imagined. 

Ah… This might really be it for me.  But if I could save the two of them in exchange for my life, I guess that’s not a bad deal in the end. If there’s a next life, I want to be reincarnated into a fantasy world with swords and magic, where I can abuse my cheat skills and live a harem life surrounded by girls.

That was the stupid thought running through my mind as my consciousness began to fade.
