For I Am A Side Character - 22: Cafeteria Incident
My name is Jason Emory, born under the fine and warm embrace of my mother, I was told to live my life as how I see fit. Growing in the world of Atlanta, you come across a variety of challenges that not only burns your soul to move, but it also burns the very will of your needs and ambition.
From seeing how hunters fight in dungeons, I fell in love with the very life that they were living in.
And to it, I spoke what I wanted the very first time I saw a hunter fought…
“…I wanna be like them someday.”
Hearing my words, both my parents were in shock…but yet after it, they simply smiled and allowed me to pursue what I wanted. Normally a parent would have second doubts, but it felt like I was encouraged to do what I wished to do.
They never told me their reason for it, but I felt blessed knowing that I was following my own path.
Through the years, I have carried within me the ambition to become the strongest hunter there was in this world.
I learned everything that I could to gain the proper path of being a hunter.
At one time, I meet a powerful mage who I wanted to hunt with along the dungeons. Her with the fiery blazes of her magic and me with my ambition, I wanted us to form a strong party together. Something that would one day grow into one of the many parties that will compete for the top.
But to my ambition, she rejected my request. I can see why that she would…I mean, she was one of the strongest people my age.
It would take a miracle for even someone our age to harm her body if they fought head to head…she was simply that strong. Probably one of the strongest in the future.
Her name was Jessabelle Morrison.
When I came to realize that we were both going to attend the same academy, I was ecstatic.
I had the chance to finally form something with her…all it would take was a few pushes to convince her otherwise…
But to my shock, after we finished our exams in the academy, I discovered that she was injured…
A scratch on her face was found that day…
And it made me realize…
Apart from her, there were some other capable people in this academy and it only burned my passion even more so.
My ambition only grew from there.
I wanted to meet these strong people, but to it, I never did came to meet them.
But I hoped that one day, we would all come clashing in with one another and form some type of destiny on our paths. It’s a dream that I would one day hope to achieve.
Each time I meet some…feel someone that was strong, a burning flame would always rise within my soul, telling me to simply dash to them and gain some kind of camaraderie…some kind of connection.
On our first day at the academy, I was surprised to find myself being classmates with not just Jessabelle Morrison the rank 2 person of our year but also with Audrey Yagami who was ranked 1st out of all the first years in the academy. The number 1 and number 2 were sitting in the same class as me…and I was simply ecstatic to find this out.
I didn’t even hesitate to approach them in forming some kind of connection with one another, but to it, Audrey Yagami was never interested or even showed any interest in my say, but Jessabelle Morrison however, despite her uptight personality, spoke back to me as if she remembered my existence.
In some way, I succeeded.
To this, I guess the first day was a success.
With that said, I might also meet the other strong people at my next class schedule…which was lunch time.
****
The class ended as it should.
Prof. Morrison gave me a failing grade and Jessica young was able to pass. To it, after we did pass, we made our way to the cafeteria in the academy to have our lunch
We got an hour or so to have our lunch and knowing that the cafeteria was a place that was packed with students from all grades, me and Jessica didn’t waste anytime at picking our meals.
When we arrived at the cafeteria, I was shocked to find that the whole area was already half-way full.
With fourth years students to freshman years lining up to claim their food, it was hard to believe that this school was a private school ith how they handled the students line-up.
“Hmm, looks like the rumors were true after all.” said Jessica.
“What rumors?” I asked.
“…That we should bring our own packed lunches if we want to sit or eat on time in the academy. The cafeteria is to small to host over 2000 students in just an hour of a break.” said Jessica in a rather annoyed expression.
“…Yeah, maybe we should bring our own lunches next time.” I said, agreeing to her statement.
“Well, it doesn’t look like the line’s that long, we’re not gonna waste a lot of time lining up in the food line, might as well line up now so that we can have our lunch minutes later.” she said.
“…right.”
In front of us were a line of about 50 students….if we do this right, maybe about thirty minutes later, we can take our order.
So with that we lined up to the food aisle.
As thirty gruesome minutes passed, we finally got our lunch.
Jessica went with the Sandwich-set while I went with a more filling set, which was the Pasta-set.
As we sat down on one of the many empty tables, we both ha a look at our own plate.
“Hmm, why did you choose pasta?” she asked.
“Well, It looked great…and filling. Plus, I like me some spaghetti.”
“Well, it does look appetizing.” she said as she leaned in to look at my pasta.
“Why did you get a sandwich?” I asked.
“Well…I like sandwiches. Their the staple of what a hunter brings to a dungeon.” she said.
“But we’re not in a dungeon.” I said.
“…Shut up okay, I panicked. A lot of other kids were waiting in line and I had some trouble choosing which one to pick out of the hundreds in the board.” she said, looking regretful in her decision.
“…wanna split our lunch?” I asked, feeling pitiful at her angry face.
“What?”
“You get half of my pasta, I get half of your sandwich.” I said.
“Hmm, I guess…but aren’t you embarrassed about sharing our lunches!?” she asked.
“What? Not really no…” I said as I started to divide my pasta in half using my fork.
I didn’t really understood why she would feel sensitive about this…but its only lunch with a friend. Nothing else really pops up in my head when I’m doing a simple act of friendship.
“F-fine…here.” she said as she then hands me her other half of her sandwich while I piled up my other half of the pasta unto her plate.
In that time, we began to eat our lunch. We also tried to make small conversation with one another.
“I heard that if you put spaghetti in the middle of a bread, you can make a pretty good…but pretty messy sandwich.” I said.
”Ai khan scee that.” she said as she talked with her mouth half-full.
“..Hmm”
As we enjoyed our meal together, all of a sudden, another pair of students joined us on our table.
*thuk*
*thuk*
Both trays of food were placed next to us and to it, when I turned to see who it was, I was shocked to find out the person sitting next to me.
“!?” there he stood with his innocent gaze and a tray filled with a roasted duck leg.
And on the other end was a girl with a blazing personality and a glaring eye towards my way.
“Do you remember me?” asked the girl in her irritated tone.
“…” in that moment, I was only silent and nervous as she sat with bloodlust in front of me.
“…Your Jessabelle Morrison, rank 2 of the entire first years of the academy.” said Jessica as she stopped chewing in their arrival.
“I didn’t asked you.” said Jessabelle as she turned to Jessica with a bully-like expression.
“!…” to it, Jessica was taken aback by her bloodlust…where she then looked to me with worry.
“Its hard to remember seeing as how I don’t see that scar on your face…but looking at you now, well…if it isn’t Jessabelle Morrison.” I said as I tried to act tough in front of her, but to it, her reaction was rather tame.
She sat down and started eating down on her lunch, which by the way was a simple set of meat-stew and rice.
“It looks like you know each other, well if you don’t mind, I’d like to introduce myself as well. Hi, I’m Jason Emory, ranked 3rd in the entire first years.” said Jason as he then raised his hand to shake mine in an attempt to make friendly introduction.
“…” as I stared at his hand, I was reminded of my mission in this world…and it mostly revolves around this person.
What I choose to do will most likely create a path that would set our relationship with one another…
I had to think clamly in this situation…
But as I did, all of a sudden, the Sytem suddenly pops in front of me and granted me a side-mission quest.
[Side Mission #1: Ignore the Protagonist for the entire lunch period.]
[Rewards: 1+ System points.]
[Time Limit: 30 minutes. ]
‘…What!? a side mission?’
To it, seeing this system pop in front of me, I was quite surprised.
But seeing its reward…and the intention behind this system’s sudden mission only made me realize something.
God doesn’t want me to involve myself with the protagonist….or not yet at least.
To ignore his intention to make some sort of kinship is simply how he was written in the book.
A dreamer…
A social butterfly…
He dreams of becoming one of the strongest hunters in the world of Atlanta, so to it, he plans to gather a strong group of friends to tackle many dungeons.
It’s a simple dream…one that perfectly show’s one’s idea for a gathered strength. But to this idea, it lacks something that I can only ever feel in the tip of my tongue.
By it, Jason is a Dreamer…
He holds one of the many powers that could ultimately ruin the enemies that stand before him.
The blue flame given by the angel.
If the system wants me to avoid him, that I will comply…
As he raised his hand for a handshake, I simply turned to stare at him disinterestedly and simply continued to chew on my food.
“…” to this reaction, Jason was quite surprised by my interaction with him.
“…” Jessica was also quite taken aback by my action to ignore Jason in his kind gesture, but to her curious manner, she then slowly started eating again. It seems she was buried under the awkward pressure of this entire situation.
“Our last class for the day is Combat Practice…there, the teachers allow the students to chose another student for a form of duel. We’ll be there…and I”m expecting that you will too.” said Jessabelle as she puts down her fork on top of her empty plate.
“…What do you want from me?” I asked as I turned to her with the same cold gaze I put when I fight in a serious manner.
“…to put you in your place.” she said as she then lightly rubs her cheek. The cheek where I injured her in the entrance exam. As she touched her cheek, her eyes furrowed…and in that moment, her presence suddenly grew and her intense nature doubled as she stared at my direction.
“…” but as she did, all she found was the smirking expression that I gave out.
I couldn’t help but feel excited for what was to come in this test…
She was as straightforward as ever with her blood-filled intentions.
“No thanks…” I said as I smile was formed from my smirk.
In that denial, her grip on her spoon coupled with her magic, simply bent the spoon on impulse…
“Soril!” cried Jessica in fear of what was to come.
In that clear show of intimidation and anger, Jessabelle stood up from her table and she slowly made way out of the cafeteria. Filled with anger and tension.
“…Well, that was something.” said Jason as he tried to ease the awkward tension in the table.
“…”
“Well, I gotta go…sorry for intruding.” said Jason as he too tries to leave the table.
“…”
“…What was wrong with you? Why did you intimidate her?” asked Jessica as she stands to try to find reason in my actions.
“She’s not going to do anything. I rejected her invitation.”
“I don’t think that’s going to stop her.” said Jessica with a furrowed brow.
“Hmm, I don’t know…as long as a teacher is there to monitor the situation, things won’t escalate like how today did.”
“Did you want to fight her?” asked Jessica.
“…Obviously not.” I said.
“But…the way you said it was so irritating. It seemed like you were just as willing to fight her as she did.” said Jessica.
“Really? To be truthful, I was pretty intimidated by her. And my reaction was simply what one would call a nervous tick. I smile pretty badly when I feel excited or horrified.” I said.
“…This is unbelievable.” as she said this, she stands up from her table and she started making her way out, leaving me to my own.
