Chapter 13: The Hero of [Resurrection] Doesn’t Know His True Strength
“W-What is that…?”
“…The Ixion Kingdom’s army. Honestly, when a flashy tower suddenly appears where the Great Pit used to be, any nation would send troops. Judging by their formation, this looks like a scouting force.”
“Scouting!? Wait—doesn’t that easily top ten thousand men!?”
Shizukuishi gasped.
It was easy to forget, but the Ixion Kingdom was a major power—even rotting from the inside as it was.
Sending out ten thousand soldiers as a mere “scout force” was nothing unusual for them.
“But more importantly… what’s with this room!? Why is the outside view being projected into midair!? Laverne-san!!”
We were inside the lowest floor of the tower, deep in the abyss—yet we could clearly see the scene outside, the Ixion army gathering at the tower’s base.
How the hell were we watching the surface from here, you ask?
Good question. I wanted to know that myself.
When Laverne suddenly called me in this morning, I found the walls of this chamber plastered with what looked like thin stone tablets.
And now those tablets were showing live images of the Ixion army encircling the tower.
Laverne threw back her head and laughed heartily.
“Fuhahaha!! I heard all about ‘surveillance cameras’ and ‘monitors’ from Shizukuishi!! With the combined efforts of the Heroes of [Clairvoyance], [Smithing], [Enchantment], and many others, we made this system a reality!!”
“A collab project!?”
“Indeed!! From this room, we can control every trap in the tower at will!! …Though, of course, I can’t handle it all myself, so a few bored heroes are helping manage things. If the Ixion fools dare to invade the tower, we’ll wipe them out!!”
Just then—
“Seems it won’t be that simple.”
“Eh?”
That came from Imuru, the Hero of [Library], apparently classified as one of Laverne’s “bored heroes.” She pointed at one of the monitors.
On it, the Ixion army was setting something up.
It looked like a gun, but far, far bigger—so massive it had to be pulled by two land-dragons, each stronger than a horse.
A bad feeling twisted in my gut.
We didn’t know what kind of weapon it was… but Shizukuishi clearly did.
“T-That’s… a cannon!? They actually went and built one!?”
“Shizukuishi, what exactly is that?”
“Um, put simply—it’s like a gun, but way bigger and ridiculously more powerful!!”
“Ohh, very easy to understand.”
“Fuhahaha!! And what do they plan to do, lugging something so big and heavy into a dungeon raid!? Fuhahahaha!!”
“No, um, I think maybe…”
As if mocking Laverne’s laughter, the kingdom’s soldiers aimed the massive barrel directly at the tower.
And in that moment, I realized what was coming.
“Haahahahaaa—huh?”
The Ixion army opened fire.
From the start, they had no intention of storming the tower. Their plan was to smash it from the outside.
Laverne’s laughter died instantly, her face stiffening.
She stared at the monitors in silence, her shoulders beginning to tremble.
“Y-You insolent, barbaric nation!! Do you have no respect for the creators of such works!? A dungeon is meant to be challenged head-on, fair and square!! To just destroy it without even trying—!!”
“P-Please calm yourself, Laverne!!”
“Uwaaaahhh!! I worked so hard on the traps and the gimmicks!! I won’t forgive them!! Summon the Hero of [Slaughter]!! Wipe them all out!!”
Imuru had to drag Laverne—bawling and thrashing—out of the monitor room to calm her down.
“…She kind of looks pitiful like that.”
“Well, to be fair, it’s a perfectly reasonable strategy. No one would want to charge headfirst into some giant mystery tower without knowing what’s inside.”
“Um, Elott-san… what if they actually destroy the tower…?”
“Sniffle. That won’t happen, so relax, Shizukuishi.”
Laverne came back right away, wiping her nose on Imuru’s clothes as she spoke.
Ugh. Gross…
“What makes you so sure it won’t happen?”
“Because that tower was a joint project with the Hero of [Castle]. Look closely—it hasn’t taken a single scratch, has it?”
“Oh—you’re right.”
On the monitor, the tower stood tall and unscathed, completely unaffected by the cannon fire.
“Heroic power is the degraded form of the goddess’s power!! No human-made weapon can damage it, not unless they fire a thousand shots!! So, come now—enter the dungeon and face it head-on, as you should!!”
“…A thousand shots, huh.”
“Hmm? What is it, Elott!? Why are you staring at them so intently!?”
“No, just… I’m pretty sure they’ll actually fire that many.”
“…Eh?”
And sure enough, for hours on end, the Ixion army continued to bombard the tower.
The Ixion Kingdom really was a powerful force.
The tower wouldn’t collapse, but at this rate, we’d just sit there taking hit after hit forever.
“Shall we strike back?”
“W-What are you saying, Elott!?”
“If we just hole up down here in the abyss, we’ll never drive the Ixion army away. With me included, we’ve got heroes who grew strong enough to defeat the Wicked Dragon. We shouldn’t have much trouble.”
“W-Well… that’s true, I suppose.”
Besides, the tremors from their cannon blasts were shaking all the way down to the abyss. Honestly, it was getting annoying. At the very least, we needed to take out those cannons.
Silesta suddenly popped her head into the room, clearly siding with me.
“Mister’s right. Sitting here and taking it doesn’t suit me. I’ll go.”
“I’ll go too.”
“You’re the king, mister. Kings wait. I’ll bring you the heads of our enemies instead.”
“N-No, no heads necessary. Just… maybe bring someone else with you—”
“It’s fine.”
Silesta gave a faint smile.
“Fighting against overwhelming numbers is what I’m best at.”
“W-Wait, Silesta!?”
Before I could stop her, Silesta dashed out of the monitor room and headed straight for the surface where the Ixion army was waiting.
On the monitors, her lone figure stood facing the massive army.
Even if she was a hero with incredible power, her stamina wasn’t infinite.
Taking on ten thousand soldiers alone should’ve been impossible.
I was about to call for reinforcements—when I froze.
“…No way.”
The monitors showed a scene I could hardly believe.
Turns out, I didn’t know the first thing about Silesta’s real power.
“W-Wha-Wha-Wha—what the hell is that!?”
“She’s firing off countless slashes, cutting down entire ranks of soldiers at once. Ah—she just sliced that cannon clean in half.”
“Fuhahahaha!! Well done, Silesta!! Exterminate that worthless army that doesn’t appreciate the beauty of true battle!!”
“Ohh, look!! With a single sweep, she’s split hundreds of soldiers into top and bottom halves!!”
Of course, the soldiers weren’t just going to sit there.
Some of the officers quickly pulled their men together, and a squad of a dozen lined up for a coordinated volley.
BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG
Unlike the guns we’d seen during the village attack, these were newer models—faster to reload, stronger, deadlier.
Even Silesta would take damage if they hit.
But she only gave the incoming hail of bullets a glance, then flicked her arm.
A wall of slashing energy rose up, cutting and deflecting every bullet in midair.
“A-Amazing!! Silesta-san is that strong!? I always thought she was just the pervert hanging around Elott-san making dirty remarks!!”
“Shizukuishi, you didn’t know—but Silesta is one of the top three strongest among us!!”
“In that case, we might actually win!! …Hm?”
And then—
Three massive iron boxes rumbled across the battlefield, shaking the ground as they rolled toward Silesta. Each carried its own mounted cannon.
“No way—that’s a tank!?”
Shizukuishi shouted in shock, but the moment barely lasted.
BOOM!!
The cannon fired straight at Silesta.
The shot hit dead-on—
And in an instant, her body was blown apart into pieces of flesh.

[Afterword]
Quick Mob Hero Spotlight
The Hero of [Castle] (gender unknown)
A hero with the power to conjure entire castles out of nothing. They spend all their time holed up in a hidden chamber deeper than even the abyss itself. Extremely shy—if anyone tries to talk to them, they sprint away at full speed. The only one who’s ever managed a normal conversation with them is Elott, and they’ve since opened up only to him. They couldn’t refuse when Laverne begged for help, so they cooperated in creating the tower.
If you thought, “Wait—Silesta got blown into meat chunks!?” then smash those ★s!
