Chapter 04: The Hero of [Resurrection] and the Abyss Temple
“At laaast, we found it!!”
After spending an entire day devouring book after book from Imuru’s [Library], we finally discovered one that described the “Great Pit.”
At first glance, it looked like nothing more than an ancient, worn-out tome.
“That book looks really old, miss.”
“Roughly four thousand years old, from the mythic age when the goddess herself was said to still walk the earth.”
“S-Seriously, something that old…?”
Imuru flipped the book open and jabbed her finger at one particular passage.
“Here it is!!”
“…Mister, can you read it?”
“No, the script’s way too ancient. I can’t make out a single word…”
“Hah, honestly. Both Elott and Silesta are seriously lacking in their studies.”
“…Miss. Which do you want ripped off—your right boob, or your left boob?”
Silesta delivered the line with such a deadpan face that I couldn’t even tell if she was joking—and that was terrifying.
Imuru flinched hard, her shoulders jerking, before quickly changing the subject by reciting the text aloud.
“It says, ‘The great goddess sealed the wicked dragon deep underground, within the abyss that connects to the Great Pit, and bestowed trials upon her beloved children. Those who overcome these trials shall be rewarded with immeasurable riches, the proof of a mighty king, and the hand of a beautiful celestial princess.’”
“The Great Pit… the abyss… yeah, that lines up.”
“But miss, what exactly is this wicked dragon?”
“Most likely the dragon described in this other record here.”
As she said this, Imuru pulled out another book—probably one she’d stumbled across while searching for the main text.
On one page, drawn in that peculiar ancient style, was the image of a dragon.
“This was written in the same mythic age. Here’s a passage about the ‘Wicked Dragon.’ Apparently, it was said to be a dragon with nine heads.”
“Sounds strong. I wanna fight it.”
“Silesta, you’re a total battle junkie!!”
“Anyway, putting dragons aside, I don’t see any clues about escaping.”
“Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong.”
“Huh?”
Imuru reopened the first book and pointed to the line:
“Those who overcome the trials shall be rewarded with immeasurable riches, the proof of a mighty king, and the hand of a beautiful celestial princess.”
As I tilted my head, not sure what that was supposed to mean, Imuru grinned smugly.
“If it says rewards are given, then there must be a way back to the surface. Otherwise, what kind of sick goddess would it be? Clear the trial, only to be told to live in the abyss forever? That’d make her a total evil god!!”
“T-That makes sense!!”
In other words—somewhere in this abyss, there had to be a path back to the surface.
We hadn’t found it yet, but knowing it existed was already a huge step forward.
“The most likely possibility is that somewhere in the abyss lies the ‘Wicked Dragon.’ If we defeat it, we may be able to return to the surface.”
“Then our first step is finding this ‘Wicked Dragon’!!”
“Mister, mister.”
At that moment, Silesta tugged on my hand, giving it a little pull.
“…What is it?”
“I think I’ve already seen the place where that ‘Wicked Dragon’ might be.”
“Eh!?”
“Silesta!! Tell us everything!!”
“You remember how, after you resurrected me and then passed out, I killed the nearby monsters to kill time and keep things safe?”
“Ah, right. You mentioned that. And it was then…?”
“Yeah. I found a temple-like place. Looked exactly like where a dragon would be hiding.”
“That’s a huge discovery, Silesta!! Let’s investigate at once!!”
Guided by Silesta, we made our way to the place she had found.
It turned out to be near the very center of the abyss.
Dimly lit and easy to miss until we got close, it was a strange temple shaped almost like an hourglass.
And the moment we laid eyes on it, both Imuru and I froze in our tracks.
“…Impossible.”
“…Impossible (it is)!!”
Our voices overlapped in perfect sync.
Even though we were still quite a distance away, we could already feel it.
Silesta, however, just tilted her head in confusion—the only one unfazed.
“Mister, miss, what do you mean by ‘impossible’?”
“…Silesta, you don’t feel anything?”
“Hmm? Not really. Nothing special.”
“Ahh, that explains it. Silesta’s just too strong, so she can endure it.”
“I agree. But for me and Imuru, we can’t even get close to that temple.”
The closer we had gotten, the more we’d felt it.
A presence so vile it made the Demon Lord seem like a child in comparison.
An overwhelming malice that clawed at the soul itself, awakening primal fear.
Cold sweat ran down my back. My entire body trembled.
Neither Imuru nor I could take another step. We had no choice but to give up on investigating.
Silesta, however, insisted on trying. She walked right up to the massive temple doors—only to stop, hesitate, and quickly retreat.
Then she said just one thing:
“Yeah… no way.”
And with that, we returned to our base to discuss what to do next.
“That presence—it really was the ‘Wicked Dragon,’ right?”
“My guess? It’s deliberately leaking its aura, filtering out anyone without the strength to face it.”
“I’d say Silesta’s theory is correct.”
Imuru slumped her shoulders.
“As long as that thing is there, investigating the temple is impossible. We’ll have to give up and search for another way—”
“…No. We will investigate the temple.”
“Eh!? Elott, that’s insane!! You’d need at least a hundred heroes on Silesta’s level!!”
“That’s fine. Then I’ll just resurrect a hundred heroes on Silesta’s level.”
“!?”
So far, we hadn’t found a single clue for escaping the abyss other than the temple.
That meant putting all our effort into conquering it.
Of course, that didn’t mean ignoring other possibilities.
Not every hero I resurrected would have combat-oriented powers like Silesta.
Some, like Imuru, would have abilities not suited for battle but still useful in other ways.
Those kinds of heroes could help investigate the abyss itself.
“For now, let’s just start resurrecting heroes one after another and ask for their cooperation.”
“Okay, mister. I’ll go look for a nice skeleton.”
“That phrase—‘a nice skeleton’—is the weirdest power word I’ve ever heard!!”
A few minutes later—
“Mister, mister! I found a skeleton that looks really strong.”
“A skeleton that looks strong?”
With her usual blank face but a proud little hmph through her nose, Silesta returned.
Curious, I followed her—and sure enough, there it was: an undeniably “strong-looking” skeleton sprawled on the ground.
Compared to a normal human’s, its bones were about three times larger.
“This thing must’ve been at least five meters tall.”
“I’ve read that long ago, there were elf and dwarf heroes as well. This might be the remains of a giant hero.”
“G-Giant!? I thought that was just a myth…”
“Hmm? Giants absolutely existed. From what I know, though, there were only a handful—and by now they might already be extinct.”
The knowledge Imuru and I had was a few centuries out of sync.
So it wasn’t strange if there were things she knew that I didn’t.
Maybe the very existence of giants as a race had simply been forgotten in modern times.
“If this really is a giant, then it should possess tremendous combat strength!!”
“Mister, go ahead and do it.”
“Alright, here goes.”
I cast [Resurrection] on the enormous skeleton.
In the next instant, the corpse glowed brilliantly and reshaped into the form of a living human.
“““H-Holy crap, everything about her is huge!!”””
The girl had the golden eyes that marked her as a hero, and her long pastel-blue hair stood out.
Her skin was pale, her waist slim, her thighs plump, her butt full and shapely.
And of course, her height was over five meters tall.
That part we already knew.
The real “problem”… was that her breasts were scaled up proportionally too.
“Eh? H-Huh? What… what happened to me…?”
“Leave it to me!! I’ll summarize the situation neatly!!” Imuru declared.
But before she could, the girl suddenly cried out—
“Ah! Behind you!! Watch out!!”
I spun around to see a massive centipede monster, its jaws clattering as it lunged straight for me.
It must have tunneled through the ground to sneak up.
And at this distance, there was no dodging it.
My [Resurrection] couldn’t fix missing parts—if my head got bitten clean off, that would be the end…
“Eiih!!”
In the next moment, the giant girl grabbed the centipede’s head with one hand and—squish—crushed it flat.
Uh… wow. That was insane.
“W-Wait!! It’s still not dead!?”
Even with its head smashed, insects could still move.
And monsters were no exception. The centipede coiled around the girl’s body in a final struggle.
But she didn’t hesitate—she tore it apart like paper.
RIP! RIP! RIP!!!
Foul-smelling green fluids splattered everywhere, filling the air with a stomach-churning stench.
“Ah—f-finally, it’s dead…! Um, are you alright!?”
“Y-Yes. Thanks to you.”
“Ehehe… I’m glad you’re not hurt. So, um, what’s the situation right now—hyaaun!!”
She slipped on the monster’s slimy remains and toppled forward—straight into me.
I couldn’t dodge in time and ended up pinned beneath her.
…With her enormous boobs completely crushing me.
“Ghuuugh!?”
“Elott!?”
“Mister!!”
“Hwah, oh no!! I-I just killed someone with my boobs!!”
“D-Don’t worry… I-I’m not dead…”
The giant girl scrambled upright, flustered, then dropped into a formal kneel and started slamming her forehead against the ground over and over.
“I’m so sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!! I-I’ve always been clumsy—tripping even when there’s nothing there!! I really, really am sorry!!”
“P-Please don’t worry about it… I’m Elott, also a hero.”
“Eh? You’re a hero too? Ah, it’s true—your eyes are golden!!”
I quickly explained everything to her, from my resurrection power to our goal of escaping the abyss, and asked for her cooperation.
The giant girl nodded with almost comical enthusiasm.
“I-I can’t forgive them!! Those people are terrible!! Destroying Elott’s hometown, using you up, and then just throwing you away!? I don’t know how much I can help, but please let me fight by your side!!”
“Thank you!! Um, may I ask your name?”
“Ah—s-sorry, I forgot to introduce myself!! My name is Tiara!!”
Tiara, huh. A cute name.
“Also, my hero ability is [Gigantification]—I can make my body up to ten times bigger!!”
“Eh? Ten times? Then right now, are you using [Gigantification]?”
“N-No, not at all! I’m a giant, so this is just my normal size.”
Tiara stood about five meters tall.
Which meant if she used her skill, she could grow up to fifty meters.
The taller she got, the more muscle mass she’d gain, and the stronger she’d become.
Simple. And terrifyingly strong.
…If you ignored her clumsy side, she could easily be stronger than Silesta.
“U-Um, excuse me.”
“Yes? What is it?”
“Well, it’s really embarrassing to say, but… do you have anything I could use to cover myself!?”
…Crap. We really were out of cloth.
