ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Hey, hey, what’s the meaning of this?”
That voice rang out just as we’d finished filming the video and were getting ready to take a break. I had sensed someone approaching well before that, so I wasn’t surprised. Still, I hadn’t expected to be spoken to.
In Japan, when there was a location overlap, it was customary for the later party to yield to those who arrived first. Even then, verbal exchanges were kept to a bare minimum.
I never imagined someone would throw such provocative words our way.
“Vancet!”
“Ojou-san, what is the meaning of this? Wasn’t it agreed that our team would take over this area?”
The man called Vancet glared at Claire, making no effort to hide his displeasure. At his waist hung that sword.
“That’s your company’s arrangement, isn’t it? It has nothing to do with mine.”
“That’s a harsh way to put it. Your father is above us in the hierarchy, so there’s no need to speak so coldly. Besides…”
He looked at me.
“What’s the idea behind dragging a Japanese S-Rank Awakened into the deep levels?”
I met his gaze and then asked Heaves.
“Who is he?”
“An Awakened under a dungeon raiding contractor affiliated with the Saloon Group. They’re also one of our equipment suppliers.”
“The sword belongs to them?”
“Technically, it belongs to the chairman. It was too expensive for Claire to afford on her own.”
“I see.”
So, because she had no choice but to rely on her father’s assets, she had to steal it using Seraphim. Had it been within the range of her personal assets, she could have claimed ownership of the sword herself—but apparently, that wasn’t the case. As a result, the sword had been confiscated and handed over to them.
Even for a tycoon, a trillion-yen sword was apparently too extravagant for a child’s plaything.
“The man talking to Claire is Vancet. He’s an American A-Rank Awakened.”
“There’s no S-Ranks awakened in that company?”
“Not here. And even if there were, they’d be mage types.”
“Hey!”
While I was getting the details from Heaves, Vancet approached us and pointed his sword at me.
“Just because you’re S-Rank doesn’t mean you can act all high and mighty. You’re just a support type.”
“Is that so?”
“If you get it, then go home already. Being pampered in peaceful Japan suits you better.”
“Japan does have better beer and food, so I wouldn’t mind. But I’m on the job right now, you see. Things don’t always go as one would like.”
Vancet’s voice reached me through the automatic translator in Marisa’s voice, while my replies were translated via the mechanical voice on my phone. Frankly, it was such a bizarre scene, it made it hard for me to stay tense. The juxtaposition between the voice and Vancet’s appearance was so jarring.
“Jiro-san is strong!”
For some reason, Heaves suddenly shouted. Wondering what brought that on, I looked over—only to see their face pale, as if realizing they’d acted on impulse.
“Huh? That voice… Wait, are you Heaves?”
Vancet guessed their name from their voice alone.
“Ugh!”
“Haha! What the hell are you wearing!?”
Vancet burst out laughing.
“I always thought you were a bit soft, but I never imagined you’d dress like that! You even have makeup on! You’re the real deal, huh!”
His party members joined in his laughter.
“You’re way more entertaining than those toys you make!”
“Ugh…”
“What, you trying to flirt with Asians now, you damn sissy? Then why don’t you shake your ass for us too? That might be even more fun. Go on!”
“““Shake that ass! Shake that ass!””
His party shouted in unison, clapping and jeering. The one who couldn’t take it anymore was—Claire…
…or so I thought.
“Guh!”
Before she could speak, my fist slammed into Vancet’s cheek. He flew beautifully through the air and crashed into the cleaned-out magic stone vein, landing flat on the ground.
“Whoops, my bad.”
In the silence that followed, I looked at my fist, then down at him, and said.
“There was a filthy fly buzzing around your mouth, you see. I ended up swatting it away out of reflex.”
As we waited for the mechanical translation to kick in, I turned my eyes toward his party.
“Looks like some were flying around you as well. Shall I swat them for you too?”
The laughter and jeering died down. Still, their fighting spirit hadn’t faded. They were the kind of people who made it as far as the seventieth floor. A little intimidation wasn’t going to rattle them.
“You bastard!”
Vancet immediately got back on his feet.
Good. All according to the plan. It would’ve been a problem if he’d passed out from just that.
“You son of a bleep—bleep—I’ll bleeping kill you!”
The translation function started spitting out nonsense halfway through.
Bleep?
Was that a censorship beep? So the content was deemed unbroadcastable by the automatic translation function.
“If you’re so eager to suffer, I’ll be happy to oblige! Just like the others, you can rot in the dungeon dirt!”
“That kind of threat won’t work on me.”
“You bastard!”
“Jiro-san!”
Before Vancet and his men could move, Mio stepped in front of me.
She had already switched to her combat pickaxe and large shield
“I’ll fight too!”
“Much appreciated.”
“Heaves!”
“Claire?”
“Get on!”
“But…”
“You need to show them the power of your creations!”
“…! Got it!”
Behind me, Claire and Heaves climbed onto Seraphim. If this was how things were going to play out…
“Then, I suppose it’s time to show them how terrifying support types can really be.”
I knew what I had to do.
