ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After taking a day to rest, I headed to the D-Ministry.
I woke Mimimi up when we arrived at the apartment and had her go into her room by herself. I could have used phasing magic to phase through, but it would be troublesome if she raised any suspicions later. So, I decided to wake her up normally instead. Her panicked reaction was pretty amusing.
That said, if I teased her too much, I had no idea when she might get angry. It wasn’t exactly appropriate behavior for a man estimated to be over 150 years old (officially 35 on record + about 100 years as a final boss + an unknown period as a dungeon monster). I cut my teasing off at an appropriate point.
I arrived at the D-Ministry just before noon. Even though I hadn’t mentioned when I would be coming, Samejima-san and Minister Niitaka showed up immediately.
“How about having lunch together?”
As Minister Niitaka said this, what seemed to be his secretary brought in three stacked meal boxes along with tea for us. When I opened the lid, I found an extremely luxurious grilled eel over a rice box set.
“It’s from a restaurant favored by high-ranking politicians.”
“That must mean it’s quite something.”
“You’ll understand once you taste it.”
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if it was really okay for me to eat something this extravagant, but Samejima-san didn’t seem to have any such reservations.
“Do you eat this often, Samejima-san?”
“Of course not. But isn’t it common for companies to occasionally treat themselves to good meals at the company’s expense?”
“Well, that might be true.”
My memories from working in a company were hazy at best, so I wasn’t entirely sure. Besides, Samejima-san had been employed at the D-Ministry ever since becoming an Awakened, so she wouldn’t know much about the normal corporate norms. Minister Niitaka was probably in the same boat.
“Just because we’re using tax money doesn’t mean we have to live in austerity. The important thing is whether we’re doing our job properly or not.”
Saying that, Minister Niitaka took a bite of his grilled eel, clearly savoring the taste. I decided to eat as well. It was delicious.
“This is really good.”
“The restaurant also serves many other dishes as well. If you like it, I can take you there.”
“I’d look forward to that.”
“By the way, you’ve been making quite a bit of money, haven’t you?”
“Still, changing how you spend money isn’t that easy.”
“Like how you process information, huh? Well, anyway, if you don’t mind, could you tell us your story while we eat?”
“It’s nothing too significant.”
I was just having a little dispute with my former employer. I told them about the battle against the Black Minotaur. My dispute with the goddess and the battle against the Seed of Ruin. By the time I finished recounting everything, we had also finished our grilled eel box set. It was an extra-large portion, with an additional layer of eel hidden between the rice, yet none of us had left a single bite.
“We should have heard that after eating.”
Minister Niitaka let out a sigh as he finished his tea.
“I lost track of the taste halfway through. What a waste.”
“Agreed.”
“Hey, you can’t blame me for that.”
Sure, fighting the Seed of Ruin was nerve-wracking, even for me, but was it really something to be that shocked about?
“I’ve told you about my past and the goddess before, haven’t I?”
“Yeah, you did, but still…”
“By the way, what’s your classification?”
“My classification?”
“As a monster.”
“Ah… if you mean by this world’s ranking system, I’ve never really measured my strength that way.”
“Then, um… if you were fighting Black Minotaurs, how many could you take on at once?”
Samejima-san asked me an odd question.
“Black Minotaurs?”
“Yeah.”
“I could probably handle a hundred of them at once without much trouble.”
“……”
“……”
“Is something wrong?”
“No… I was just thinking that I’m really glad you’re Japanese.”
“I see.”
“By the way, did you hear?”
Now that Minister Niitaka seemed satisfied, Samejima-san spoke up.
“Hear about what?”
“A team of five S-Class Awakened was sent to exterminate a dungeon in Country C that had been left alone for ten years.”
“Hmm…. And let me guess, they encountered Black Minotaurs there?”
“Exactly.”
“Black Minotaurs after ten years? That dungeon must have been managed quite well.”
Or perhaps, like me, it had housed a reincarnated dungeon monster.
“During the dungeon raid in Country C, three S-Class Awakened lost their lives.”
“That’s unfortunate, but Country C is a major power with a large population, so they must have a lot of S-Class Awakened, right?”
“That’s right. Country C officially claims to have one hundred S-Class Awakened even now.”
“That’s impressive. In that case, losing three isn’t much of an issue, is it?”
Japan, including me, only has five.
“Hey… Are you saying all this seriously?”
“Huh? Yes, of course.”
Both of them let out a sigh at the same time.
Why?
“Come to think of it…”
“There’s more?”
For some reason, Minister Niitaka gave me a displeased look.
“When I defeated it, for some reason, a drop item appeared. Do you want to check it?”
“A drop item?”
“What was it?”
“Well, that’s the thing. I don’t know. Want to check it together?”
“Wait. Let’s change locations.”
It seemed they assumed it was something dangerous. Since I had no idea what it was either, I had no grounds to object. I obediently followed them to a storage-like facility next to the training center, which itself was adjacent to another building.
“We’ve built high-pressure containment facilities across various locations for emergency hazardous material disposal. This is one of them.”
“I see.”
“Alright, take it out.”
Minister Niitaka seemed eager to check it himself, but before that, a group of Awakened wielding large shields lined up in front of him. Honestly, they were probably not happy about being used as human shields. Though, that wasn’t really my concern.
“Alright then.”
I took out the mysterious white orb from my item box. And then—
“Huh?”
When I first obtained it, it was a large, hard sphere. But now, as soon as I retrieved it, it slipped through my fingers like a warm liquid and dropped onto the floor.
“Guheh!”
And then… It spoke.
“That’s not a sphere.”
“Indeed.”
Just as Samejima-san said, what emerged wasn’t a sphere. A beautiful woman lay sprawled on the floor, wearing an extremely thin garment—so sheer that her bare skin could be seen through it. I knew this woman.
“Oh my, if it isn’t Goddess-sama.”
“Kyuuu~~”
Goddess Piroane had completely passed out.
