Chapter 13: Failure Happens to Everyone
Continuing our exploration of the magic realm in search of our quest targets, we encountered and exterminated various vermin such as a Rushbee, Poison Ant, Giant Bat, Sleep Sheep, Confusion Rabbit, and Stone Snake, while also copying their skills to acquire “Paralysis Resistance,” “Poison Resistance,” “Darkness Resistance,” “Sleep Resistance,” “Confusion Resistance,” and “Petrification Resistance.”
Come to think of it, there are still some skills I haven’t tried yet. Might as well try them all now. I called up the skill list and tapped on “Skill Creation.” When prompted to select the skills I wanted to integrate, I tried throwing various unique ones together, but it seemed there was a pattern to what could be combined, and I couldn’t quite “create” anything yet.
As I walked ahead, following Eskaia’s lead in the search for vermin, something flashed in my mind.
Could it be possible to integrate resistance skills? Let’s try it immediately. I threw in “Paralysis Resistance,” “Poison Resistance,” “Darkness Resistance,” “Sleep Resistance,” “Confusion Resistance,” and “Petrification Resistance” together…

“Paralysis Resistance,” “Poison Resistance,” “Darkness Resistance,” “Sleep Resistance,” “Confusion Resistance,” “Petrification Resistance”

“Status Abnormality Nullification”
> Integrate? Y/N

Alright, I was able to integrate resistance-related skills just as I thought. Choosing YES caused a significant decrease in my recovered MP, but since my level had also increased, it seemed I didn’t faint. This integration skill is useful for tidying up the skill list. Very handy indeed.
“Shoma-kun? What are you doing?”
“Oh, I was just experimenting with integrating copied skills, and I succeeded just now. Take a look. This shining ‘Status Abnormality Nullification’ skill.”
Eskaia, looking at the displayed status, widened her eyes in astonishment.

“Um, uh… Shoma-kun… You just hunted down some low-level vermin, right…? Why is your HP over 20,000 and your MP over 60,000…? And there are skills I don’t really recognize and some that seem a bit familiar…”
Eskaia, tapping her temple as she thought, struck a perfect pose just like a painting.
Hmm, as expected of an elf. Even her thinking poses is elegant… Eskaia-san is truly remarkable.
“Oh, there’s nothing more I can teach you… Looks like I’ll be out of a job in just one day… I thought I had finally found the ideal hero too…”
“No, no, I’m still clueless about everything related to this job, so I’ll still need your guidance. Please don’t leave.”
“Really? Well, if you insist… But now, I’ve become the witness to the first battle of a legendary hero…”
“Haha, no, I’m not that strong yet, and besides, I don’t know if I can handle the tasks without your support.”
As Eskaia sat down on the ground and began to write “の” (no) with her finger, I couldn’t help but find her a bit cute, but I refrained from saying anything as I thought it might further dampen her spirits. Though I tried to comfort her for a while, her mood didn’t seem to improve at all. At that moment, the sound of trees snapping in the depths of the forest caught our attention.
The display automatically unfolded, warning us in red letters that the quest target, the “Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra,” was approaching.
“Eskaia-san, the quest target ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra’ is coming!! Stand up!”
“Huh!? I heard you say the quest target is the ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra,’ but… what quest are we on!? I don’t understand. Shouldn’t the target be the E-rank vermin, Thorned Tusk Mammoth?”
“Huh? No, the quest target is the ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra.'”
“Huh?? But we accepted a vermin extermination request, didn’t we?”
“Yeah, exactly. I chose the top ‘Emergency Vermin Extermination Request’ as instructed, but…”
Eskaia’s complexion turned pale in an instant. She hurriedly unfolded her display to make a call, but it seemed the connection couldn’t be established due to the influence of the magic realm.
Oh no, it seems like I messed up somehow. Maybe the ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra’ is actually a really strong vermin…
Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
With a roar echoing in my stomach, a huge dragon with multiple heads emerged from the trees, knocking down those same trees as it approached.

That’s strong… I can tell that with just one glance… I feel like I won’t be able to do much damage by using my basic sword abilities.
I could see one of the heads inhaling something, so I pushed Eskaia, who was absorbed in trying to make a call out of the way.
“Hey! What are you doing? I’m not that cheap of a woman to be pushed like this!”
Eskaia, who was pushed down, was blushing and flustered. It’s not like I feel that way about you, but given the current situation, it’s not the time to argue, so I immediately got up and activated the registered “Ice Brid Storm,” targeting the head of the “Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra.”
Chunks of fist-sized ice appeared around me, swirling like a blizzard, hitting the heads of the dragon within the area, freezing some of them.
Got it. Let’s start copying the skills now.
As the “Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra,” had some of its heads frozen, it continued to breathe fire vigorously with its remaining heads, I successfully copied its skills by touching it quickly.

I’ll acquire all these skills. Although my MP halved with that decision, my HP increased to 60,000. My burns and cuts on my body also began to heal over time thanks to these abilities.
“Hey, watch out, Shoma!”
As I heard Eskaia’s voice, I realized that one of the heads of the dragon was about to bite off my hand. Although I didn’t feel any pain with my resistances, I felt uneasy about losing my hand.
Oops… I let my guard down. My hand’s gone. Is this the scenario where I’ll get scolded by my mom?
However, the lost hand immediately started to regenerate from the severed section.
Ugh, it’s disgusting. What happened to my body? Is it due to the regeneration effect?
“Shoma, move!”
Reacting to Eskaia’s voice, I used “Cutting Wind Blast” again. Thousands of blades of vacuum sliced through the dragon’s heads, cutting some of them off. I continued to cast different magics on the “Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra,” mindful of my cooldowns, until I ran out of MP.
Using “Quickness” multiple times from the list of magic, I increased my agility to the maximum and activated the “Multiple Attacks” skill.
“This should be it.”
Drawing my sword from my waist, I raced up the dragon’s body at a high speed. Then, with the lightning-fast strikes of my sword, I minced the “Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra” into tiny pieces within a second.
The shredded pieces of the dragon emitted a bright light and disappeared.

“Aaaah… Solo… Solo… He defeated the ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra’ on his own… It’s a lie… It has to be a lie… And his arm grew back too…”
Eskaia, who had collapsed on the ground, looked at me with a dazed expression.
Come to think of it, she did say the ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra’ was an S-rank vermin. My arm was bitten off, but I didn’t think it was such a formidable opponent… Is this what it’s like to be a hero…
“Are you alright? Eskaia-san? Hey?”
“Aaaah… Shoma-kun… Shoma-kun defeated the ‘Multi-headed Fire Dragon Hydra’…? “
“Huh? Oh, yeah. Um, I struggled a bit. Thanks to that, my level went up again. I’m in my twenties now. Was it really that strong?”
“Aaaah… I became the witness to the first battle of the legendary hero… Oh no… What should I do… It’s terrible… I’m… in the hands of this person…”
Eskaia’s legs seemed to have given out, and she couldn’t stand up at all. So, I decided to carry her back to the village we teleported from.
Ah, she’s light… I wonder if the villagers will think I’m bullying her if she cries into my back like this… But her crying face is really lovely too.
And so, having completed my first request, I decided to return to the Great Temple from the village.
Eskaia’s breasts were unexpectedly substantial. I thought she was slender, but they pressed against my back quite thoroughly. It’s a perk of the job, isn’t it? (Shoma Hiiragi)
I wonder if I’ll be fired as the education instructor… He’s already much stronger than I am… Ugh… (Eskaia)
