Thank you very much for applying for this position despite your busy schedule. After some careful consideration, we’re unfortunately unable to meet your expectations in employing you.
We deeply appreciate the fact that you chose our company among various others, and we sincerely hope for even greater success for Hiiragi-san in the distant future.

“Again!! Why do I always receive these types of emails?! Japan is currently facing a labor shortage, you know?!”
While eating some cheap curry at the university cafeteria, I groaned as I read the email I received on my smartphone.
To have applied to over 150 different companies and not receive a single job offer from even one of them… the so-called seller’s market that the news talks about is fake news…
My phone buzzed again, which indicated another email was being received. But yet again, it turned out to be another “Good luck sort of email” from a different company.
I tossed my phone onto the cafeteria table and glared enviously at the students carefreely enjoying their university life.
Until last year, I was just like them, indulging in all my hobbies—playing games, reading light novels, going to comic markets, working part-time—and enjoying my student life. But while they were having fun, they were also thinking seriously about their future careers. Those traitors.
The conversation of my classmates’ playmates who were sitting at the edge of my vision had caught my ears.
“Did you get any job offers yet?”
“Yeah, I got one in my preferred industry, but it’s not exactly a mid-sized company. I got some from a few others as well. If you’re not aiming for the big ones, there’s still plenty of openings, right? By the way, what are you gonna do?”
“I passed the civil service exam and will be a police officer. Since there are no decent job prospects at this F-ranked university, I put in a lot of effort, attended cram school, and managed to barely slip through. I’ve already received my acceptance notice, so I’ll be working as a policeman at the local station starting next year.”
“Seriously? Being a local civil servant is pretty stable. I envy you.”
“Oh, by the way, you know that guy Shouma? Looks like he got another ‘good luck email.’ I saw him groaning again earlier. Why can’t he land a job in this super-seller’s job market?”
“He’s applied to over 150 companies, didn’t he? It’s unbelievable to not get a single offer at this time of the year. His graduation ceremony is next week too; looks like he’s decided on becoming a job-hunting dropout instead.”
Damn, they’re just saying whatever they want about me… I want a job offer too, you know! It’s already the end of March, and most companies have probably finished their hiring process. I’m feeling pretty anxious about my chances.
As March, the month just before graduation, was approaching and the different companies finished their winter recruitment exams one after another, I was still in a situation where I hadn’t gotten a single victory in this job-hunting battle that I started way back in June. As a result, I was pretty worn out mentally and physically. Although I lived with my parents and commuted to university by myself, my mother wasn’t very approving of letting me become a job-hunting dropout. Plus, I had to repay the several million yen of various interest-bearing scholarship loans I had taken out when I just entered university, so I had to secure a job. By the way, my father is a non-career national civil servant with only a high school diploma, and it seems he earns more than the average salary economically, but when I said I wanted to go to university, he was very much against it. Still, thanks to my mother persuading my father, and with the background of wanting to attend this Seiko University, if I become a job-hunting dropout, I’ll likely receive some harsh words from my mother and my father as well.
Aah! I should have been serious about job hunting during my third year… It was stupid of me to waste such an important time playing around, wasn’t it?
Feeling uncomfortable under the sympathetic gazes of my classmates, I decided to ignore them and focus on finishing the curry in front of me. At that moment, my phone, which I had thrown onto the table, vibrated again, indicating another email being received.
With a prayer-like feeling, I tapped on my phone and looked at the text displayed on the screen.
Another good luck mail is heeeeeeeere!!! It’s hopeless. This was my last chance, the operating company of the part-time job… I’m finished… I’m so burned out… I can’t get a job… Am I someone who’s not needed by anyone after all…?
Heartbroken by the “good luck email” from the company I had hoped for as a last, last resort, I finished eating the cheap curry with a tasteless tongue.
Leaving the cafeteria in despair, I headed to the familiar job placement office. It was crowded with various third-year students who had already begun preparing for next year’s recruitment exams. Among them, Ryoka-san, a university staff member at the job placement office, spotted me and beckoned me over, so I headed towards the window.
“Haah, with that face, it looks like it didn’t work out yet again.”
As we sat facing each other in the reception space next to the window, Ryoka-san sighed heavily and looked exasperated.
Ryoka-san, a staff member of the job placement office, is a beautiful older sister in her late twenties, and she was also the most caring adult who always listened to my job-hunting concerns. She was quite straightforward and sisterly. She always encouraged me and sent me off on my job search happily.
With a somewhat boyish and straightforward personality, beautifully tied-up hair, and lovely eyes, she was popular among the male students, but she was also a strong woman who would make a laughingstock out of any student who declared, “I won’t deal with any kids.” However, to me, who continued to fail in my job-hunting spree, she was a gentle sister who would listen to my complaints, take me out for drinks on nights when my exams didn’t go very well, and, unlike how she was at work, she’d take care of me by feeding me various dishes and listening to my grievances. She was a person who would let me rely on her like an older sister.
“It didn’t work out… I’m done. I’m finished. Ryoka-san’s support ended in vain, and I finished with a total defeat. After graduation, I’ll probably just continue working part-time…”
“Well, you’re the only student this year who hasn’t found a job yet. Phew, I’ve been working in the job placement office for a few years, but you’re a rare case of someone who somehow just keeps failing. You’ve got your graduation qualifications, you’re working a part-time job, and you’re even answering your final exams. What’s going wrong? Did you mess up in the interviews?”
I didn’t mess up at all! I’ve been responding to everything exactly as it was written in the manual! I’ve read that book so many times I could recite it in my sleep!
“I’m doing everything fine. Ugh, I’ll be scolded by my mom and dad… not being able to get a job… my life’s over…”
With the university graduation ceremony approaching this weekend and me having already completed my graduation requirements and submitted my thesis, the only option left for me was to graduate while still being a job-hunting dropout.
“You… haah, Hiiragi-kun… It can’t be helped… are you okay with any industry? There’s a company with a very suspicious job listing that I didn’t recommend to anyone because it seemed sketchy. But given the timing…”
“Y-Yes. I can’t be picky at this point. As long as it’s a company that gives me the title of a ‘regular employee,’ I don’t care about the industry.”
Ryoka-san, scratching her cheek nervously, seemed to radiate an aura of brightness to me at that moment, like a goddess descending from heaven itself. Knowing the existence of such a grateful company conducting a job interview at this time made me feel like a ray of hope had pierced through the darkness of despair.
Seriously… is this the beginning of a miraculous comeback in this job-hunting battle? There’s some luck in leftovers, they say. I’ll do my best to impress this company and win!
“I-Is that so? I checked out the job listing on the giant bulletin board since the job listing came in. There are rumors that this company has had several missing persons cases, you know? Even so, are you still going to apply to them?”
Missing people cases, seriously…? Even if I get a job here, will I be sent to a dangerous workplace…? But the only options left for me are to either continue working part-time or to get hired at this company.
“I’m serious. I can’t end my journey like this.”
“A-Alright. Wait here, let me try contacting them.”
After a while, Ryoka-san came back with the news that she had managed to schedule an appointment with the company in question. And so, I ended up taking the recruitment exam for “(Company) Comprehensive Hero Dispatch Service.”
Author’s notes:
While I was writing this, I was researching while thinking about how the job-hunting battle for university students this year seems to be even more of a short-term decisive battle. In Japan, new graduate recruitment tends to be at the top of the career ladder (career advancement is difficult, isn’t it? It may just be that I lack the ability, though lol), so I wonder if the students in job hunting are starting to receive job offers in their desired industries by now? I hope they don’t end up like Shoma-kun. Leaving that aside, I’ll start the new serialization. (;´Д`) Ahii
