Chapter Two: Clearly Not Your Average Corporate Gig
The next day, I made my way to the address that was given to me by Suzuka-san, whilst relying on my smartphone’s map to navigate the streets. Located in a narrow, labyrinthine alley just off a station in Tokyo, stood a dilapidated multi-tenant building of an unknown age, marked as my destination.
With its signboard displaying “3F (Ltd.) Comprehensive Hero Dispatch Service,” albeit it was a bit cracked and faded in a few places, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had stumbled into trouble.
Though the appointment was said to be available for any time, I had phoned in advance to inform them of my visit at a courteous hour, around 10:00 AM, presuming their morning business would be settled by then.
Arriving thirty minutes early due to nerves, I pondered my predicament. Would arriving too early leave a bad impression? Nonetheless, the young woman who answered the phone had a lovely voice… perhaps they also have secretaries or the like, making it a workplace abundant with young women.
“Um… excuse me… could you move aside, please?”
Startled by the sudden voice, I turned to find a woman in office attire, slightly older than myself, with her black hair tied up and thick, black-framed glasses, standing apologetically.
“Oh! Uh, sorry! I was in the way, wasn’t I?”
As I nodded in apology to the woman, she suddenly seemed to realize something and clapped her hands as if in revelation. Her gesture, incongruent with her delicate appearance, carried a hint of humor.
Could she be someone from the company? The signboard in the multi-tenant building only displayed the company name for the exam venue, and she was dressed in office-like attire after all. Despite her somewhat clunky glasses, she was quite a beautiful girl.
“Are you Shoma Hiiragi, the person scheduled for today’s recruitment test?”
Caught off guard by being addressed by the woman I had just met, I stumbled over my words.
“Uh-um, yeah! That’s me!”
I screwed up. Big time. Pre-exam blunders, it’s game over. Thank you and goodnight.
Messing up the first interaction before the exam even began made me feel like collapsing into dust.
“Hehe, you’re quite amusing. Although it’s a bit early, the president is here, so shall we start the recruitment test?”
The woman smiled warmly at me and led me up the crumbling stairs of the multi-tenant building.
“So, you’re the student who wants to join our company, huh? Well, since you’re here, have some tea. We don’t stick to very formal interviews here.”
Led by the beautiful lady with glasses, I found myself in the office of the test venue. Before I knew it, the recruitment test had already begun. There was no written exam, it was just a one-on-one interview with the president.
The president, sporting slicked-back silver hair, oversized sunglasses, visible scars from their forehead to lip, and a deep bass voice that could proclaim “muscles are justice,” seemed anything but your typical white-collar worker.
The interview was conducted in the reception area due to the cramped office space, and I couldn’t refuse the tea the beautiful secretary had made, so I nervously clinked the cup with trembling hands.
Oh man… this is bad, really bad. He’s definitely involved in some sort of shady business. Even if it’s not something like the yakuza, it’s definitely something sketchy. My hands won’t stop shaking from the fear of my life being in danger.
“President, you have quite an intimidating presence, so smile, smile.”
Encouraged by the office lady, who hugged the tray to her chest, I felt like she was cheering on a hitman or a top-notch special forces soldier. Though the man referred to as the president obliged with a smile, all I could feel was a sense of terror as if he were asking, “What color is your blood?”
I should have declined… This is scary… This must be what they call a true intimidating interview…
“Oh, sorry about that. These days, even if we advertise our job openings at employment offices or universities, we don’t get any response from them. I was on the verge of giving up on hiring anyone this year. Thank you for applying.”
If the president is like this, I wouldn’t choose this company unless I was really desperate.
“R-really? I’m honored to hear that.”
“Well then, let’s start by explaining our company’s overview and business operations. Our company was founded…”
“President! Your stories tend to get lengthy, so let me take over.”
“But Eskaia, if you do that, I won’t have any work to do.”
Huh? Eskaia? Wasn’t the office lady Japanese?
“If President Claude talks too much, the applicant might withdraw, so allow me to take over.”
“Ngh…”
So the president’s name is Claude… Maybe this company is a foreign-affiliated dispatch agency? It feels all too mysterious…

Regardless of whether it’s the mafia or the yakuza, the president seems like someone shady. I pray for Shoma, good luck enduring this pressure-filled interview! 🤣
