Chapter 23 Let’s interact with people of the same generation (?)
It’s been almost a month since I arrived in this town. I’ve been gradually learning the local script and making progress in my study of [Glyph Magic].
Today, a significant number of customers came during lunch, and the dining hall was bustling. It’s during these incredibly busy times that strange characters tend to show up.
“Is it you? The Takuto the Liar.'”
…Who is this guy? Talking to a stranger, and during such a busy time. I’ll just ignore him.
“Hey! Why are you ignoring me?”
“I’m not a ‘liar’; I’m someone else.”
…Well, that’s a lie, but still. Everyone tells a few lies now and then in life. But it’s not something to argue about with a person you’ve never met before.
“Excuse me, you’re in the way of incoming customers, so move aside.”
“Huh? Oh, sorry…”
This guy surprisingly complied.
But I continued to ignore him.
I paid no attention to him and carried on with my serving duties. It seems he couldn’t handle the stares of the other customers and left.
If you don’t have the guts to pick a fight properly, then don’t start one. Despite my childlike appearance, don’t think you can outdo me mentally when it comes to being a mature adult. I may not have much physical strength, though!
“What’s the deal with that Mitoka guy?”
“Do you know him?”
“He’s an apprentice at a woodworking workshop near my place. Around the same age as you… was he eighteen?”
“I’m nineteen, Lombard-san.”
Lombard’s wooden tableware shop is, I believe, at number six on Orange Street in the southwest. In this town, businesses don’t often have unique names. Just mentioning a name wouldn’t help locate it because you’d still need to know where it is. This dining hall is simply known as “Dining Hall Number Three on South Blue Street.” Quite an efficiency-focused approach.
About an hour later, I finally got a breather. There were still some customers having their meals, but it felt like we’d passed the peak. Then, that Mitoka guy came in again. Did he wait outside or something?
“Is it you? ‘Takuto the Liar.'”
Quite the tough customer, aren’t you?
“Mitoka! Give it a rest.”
“Oh… Lombard-san? Why are you still here?”
“Because one should savor their meal.”
That’s right, people in this town have a habit of leisurely enjoying their meals. Especially during lunch, some take almost three hours to savor their food, dessert, and tea.
“Why am I called a ‘liar’? If you can explain it properly, I might listen.”
“You…! Calling someone you’ve just met a liar…”
“Then go home.”
“Listen to me!”
“I have no interest in listening to someone who baselessly calls a stranger a liar.”
He was still trying to assert himself.
“I really dislike people who make baseless accusations without any evidence.”
“Did you lie to Ganzel-san?”
…Ganzel… Who’s that again? Oh! The doctor from that medical incident!
“Is someone named Ganzel saying that?”
“That’s right! He’s claiming you to be an Enchantment magician even though you can’t use magic, causing trouble!”
“I’ve never met that person in my life.”
“Huh…?”
“I don’t know this Ganzel person, I’ve never met or talked to them.”
“…You’re lying.”
“And I’ve never once told anyone that I’m an Enchantment magician.”
“You’re lying!”
“If you never intended to believe me from the start, why did you approach me in the first place?”
“Ganzel-san is a good person! He’s kind to people like us…”
“For me, he’s a bad person who spreads false rumors about me without ever having met me.”
“…Do you really have never met him?”
“You don’t have to believe me. But if you keep spreading falsehoods, I might have to resort to a little intimidation. I won’t forgive you or that person.”
“Takuto, you’re getting pretty heated.”
“It’s a matter of honor. I need to make sure he doesn’t recognize me as the liar here.”
“But, Lombard-san…”
“I don’t know what Ganzel said, but Takuto isn’t a liar.”
…Thank you, Lombard-san.
Truth be told, I got a bit too worked up and lost my way there.
Upon hearing Lombard’s words, Mitoka fell silent.
Perhaps Ganzel is a good person to Mitoka, but for me, he’s become the top-ranked person on my ‘Absolutely Do Not Want to Get Involved With’ list.
Mitoka left without saying anything more, but he kept glaring at me the entire time.
He’s definitely going to bother me again…
“…Have things settled down?”
“I’m sorry, Miarella.”
“It’s okay. It would’ve been strange if you just stayed quiet after hearing something like that.”
Miarella must’ve been watching over us like it was just a children’s squabble.
“But Takuto, you didn’t consider punching him, did you? I would’ve decked him.”
“Come on, Delphi. Stop it. Takuto would never resort to violence!”
“Hahaha… You’re right; my physical strength is pretty much nonexistent.”
“It’s fine that way! Brawling isn’t the solution; we’re not adventurers, after all!”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
Adventurers do tend to solve things with their fists…
“Well, if he hadn’t left, I might have decked him myself.”
…Miarella?
And so, my first interaction (if you can call it that) with someone of my own age came to an end.
Someone of my own age… Well, I’m not even sure if that’s accurate.
It doesn’t seem like we’ll be building a good relationship in the future, either.
Well, in other words…
It was a major failure.
Chapter 23.5 Lombard and Delphy
“Good grief, that Ganzell…”
“It’s more wrong to let someone like him be a doctor.”
“Yeah… I agree with that.”
“Sorry, Lombard. Did I remind you about your son?”
“…There isn’t a day I don’t remember, Delphy.”
“That’s right.”
“Rumor has it that he’s become a lot more serious since then.”
“Indeed, he actively examines children without parents.”
“He’s probably badmouthing Takuto to those kids.”
“What’s he thinking, badmouthing a child he’s never even met?”
“Yeah… It’s likely that not just Mitoka but other kids are also being influenced.”
“While I doubt he’d go so far as to lie to kids just to harm Takuto…”
“…We don’t know what else he’s doing to the children.”
“He probably tells them whatever suits his agenda.”
“At any rate, leaving it alone wouldn’t be a good idea. It could affect the children’s futures.”
“The children…?”
“It’s not just Takuto. All the kids who are involved with that guy.”
“Lombard, you’re not… planning anything, are you?”
“Don’t worry, Delphy. I have no intentions of seeking revenge.”
“Yeah, you’re right. Sorry, your expression just seemed… well, never mind.”
“He’s… someone who shouldn’t be a doctor. That much is certain.”
