- Chapter 19: Overdose
Kuzuryu and Arisu, exploring inside a cave by the seaside. Their steps are heavy.
“I thought I was used to the smell of decay, but breathing this air makes me realize I’m not at all.”
“Yes, it’s so bad I feel like vomiting despite myself.”
Both wear masks to mitigate the stench as they walk through the cave, but the foul odor is hardly reduced. As a result, their pace is quite slow. Then, they begin to see their objective.
“Ah, finally arrived.”
“This is the well we’ve been looking for…”
They see a well filled with a large number of corpses, which is evident at first glance.
“Most are completely decayed… disgusting. I can’t understand the criminal’s motive.”
“Neither can I. But, there must be some reason they’re collecting these bodies…”
Kuzuryu touches one of the corpses overflowing from the well.
“You can actually touch them? I couldn’t.”
“I’m not touching them because I want to.”
He examines the corpses thoroughly. The bodies spilling from the well aren’t entirely consumed by decay; they still retain human form. Then, as he lifts the fourth corpse.
“Hmm? There’s something here…”
He finds a small piece of paper in the chest pocket of the shirt the corpse is wearing.
“What is that?”
Arisu looks at the paper with curiosity.
“It’s a business card. Probably belongs to this corpse. Let’s take it back and check the identity.”
“A business card? But now that you mention it, there’s nothing on these bodies that could identify them.”
“Well, they’re probably intentionally removed by them. So, this card must be overlooked, right? Anyway, this could be a lead.”
Kuzuryu puts the business card in a small preservation bag and stands up.
“There’s nothing else that seems to be a clue. Let’s start preparing.”
“You mentioned it before. We came here to prepare for welcoming the sinners, right?”
Arisu asks as if remembering.
“Yeah. Though, by ‘preparation’ I mean something like a provocation.”
“Provocation?”
Arisu tilts her head, even more confused by Kuzuryu’s words.
“We’re going to dispose of all the bodies in this well.”
“…What?”
“If we take something they treasure for some purpose, they’ll definitely get angry, right? Then we’ll lure them out and confront them with our gathered forces.”
Kuzuryu explains the strategy with a sense of pride.
“I don’t think those three are that foolish, though.”
“Don’t worry. The boss is with them, too.”
“And the depth of the well is considerable. Are you saying we’ll move them ourselves? I don’t want to touch such filth.”
Arisu looks at the bodies overflowing from the well with disdain.
“Relax. I know that’s not your style, Meido. That’s why I’ve arranged for help in advance.”
“Is that so? Then I’m relieved. …And when is this help arriving?”
“Well… they should be here any time now…”
Kuzuryu checks his watch. Just then.
“No need to worry about waiting for help.”
A voice echoes from the darkness deeper in the cave, accompanied by an overwhelming aura of malice.
“Who…? No, I’ve heard this voice before.”
A voice lingering in Arisu’s memory. It’s easy to recall.
“Could it be…?”
The one who appears is Kuroko, the cafe owner.
“I thought something was suspicious, so I’ve been following you ever since Meido was released from us.”
“That’s quite a stalker.”
“I can’t help it. But it was the right decision to follow.”
Arisu lets out a small sigh.
“Meido. Is this guy from that organization?”
“Yes. Always hiding his face, never knowing what he’s thinking.”
“Quite a way to be described… Well, it’s fine.”
Kuroko’s Wry Smile in the Conversation
Kuroko lets out a wry smile during Kuzuryu and Arisu’s conversation, but her expression is unseen by them.
“Arisu-san, you were once pressed in battle against me, weren’t you? Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Okay, in what way?”
“It’s simple. You alone can’t win against us.”
Arisu asserts with a confident face.
“Is that so? Thank you for your unnecessary concern.”
Hearing Arisu’s words, Kuroko bows deeply. Kuzuryu, listening to the conversation, doesn’t feel like losing either. Amidst this, Kuroko takes out a bag from a small pouch she’s carrying.
“What’s that…?”
The bag contains a white powdery substance. An ominous feeling arises. Kuzuryu and Arisu prepare for battle and attack Kuroko.
“Too bad. I’m in time.”
With Kuroko’s words, their attacks are thwarted. They quickly distance themselves from her.
“This isn’t good… We should have finished talking and taken her down earlier.”
“Kuroko, was it? What was that powder just now?”
Kuzuryu’s question is met with silence as Kuroko looks down, motionless like a doll.
“Hey, are you listening———————”
At that moment
“——————!”
Arisu, who was standing next to Kuzuryu, is suddenly blown away.
