Chapter 2: Negotiations
“Are you serious?”
“Of course.”
How could I joke with someone in this situation like Shiroyume? It's still possible that she's lying, but probably not. She seemed to already have accepted this unusual reality. And when she said she was going to die, there was no hesitation in her eyes.
“There's nothing in it for you though?”
“I haven’t stopped being human to the point where I can just turn a blind eye to a girl who’s about to die in front of me.”
“Is that so…Then, have my parents stopped being human?”
“I don't know if they've stopped being human or not, but they've stopped being parents.”
No matter what the reason, you have no right to be a parent when you throw away your biological daughter. My heart wanted to tell her that such a person was not even human, but I felt that it would be wrong to tell her directly.
“That might be true…”
“That’s how it is.”
“But I can't take you up on that offer.”
“Why not?”
“If you were in my shoes, would you accept the offer?”
“…That’s…”
Surely, if you were crying alone because your parents abandoned you, would you go along with someone who was a classmate of yours but whom you’d never spoken to before, if he asked you to come to his house? In Shiroyume’s eyes, I was probably a man who was trying to take advantage of her grief.
“Do you understand? I know you're telling me this with the best of intentions, but I can't just say yes and go along with you.”
“Then what are you going to do?”
“Didn’t I already tell you? I’m going to die.”
“……”
Shiroyume is really determined to die. There was nothing I could do about her. I could try to convince her, but I stand very little chance. I couldn’t say anything against her sound arguments.
“Don’t you get it already? You can leave me alone. You and I only go to the same class, and this is the first time we've talked. My death shouldn't interfere with your life in any way. I’ll just not be there in the classroom starting from the third semester.”
“Are you okay with that?”
For a moment, Shiroyume looked shaken by that. But it was only a slight change, so maybe it was just my imagination.
“Even if you ask me if I’m fine with that or not, I can’t just say I am, can I? But it’s hopeless so I don’t have a choice, do I?”
After all, she didn't want to die. She just gave up on living. Can I leave her like that just because she has very little in relation to me? No! I'll do whatever it takes to take Shiroyume home. I'm not going to let her die! That's what I've decided!
“If you're going to die, give me that 100,000 yen.”
“? You were going to bring me home because you wanted this 100,00 yen?
“Aah, that's right. Besides, it would be a waste for you to keep it.”
She showed a hint of concern, and then held out an envelope to me that would have 100,000 yen in it.
“That’s true, it would be better for you to have it rather than me who’s about to die soon.”
Then I received the envelope. When I checked the contents of the envelope, I found that it contained 100,000 yen.
“Well then, I’ll buy you with this 100,000 yen.”
“……………….”
That, was the first time Shiroyume had revealed her emotions to me. The first emotion she showed me, was one of confusion.
“…What are you saying?”
“I said I'd buy you with this 100,000 yen.”
“Are you an idiot?”
“Well, if I wasn’t an idiot I wouldn’t say this. However, if that’s what it takes to save a classmate from dying, I’ll gladly become an idiot.”
I am well aware of the absurdity of what I am saying. However, to stop Shiroyume from dying, I have no choice but to be absurd.
“Haa…Why do you care so much about me? Do you like me or something? If so, I’m very sorry.”
“Oi, I didn’t even confess to you, so don’t just get the wrong idea and reject me.”
Aren’t you a bit too self-conscious? It’s true that Shiroyume is cute enough to be called a beautiful girl but. Huh? So it isn’t excessive self-consciousness?
“Then why?”
“I've already told you. I just can't turn a blind eye when there's a dying girl in front of me.”
“Even so, wouldn’t it be a bother for your parents?”
“Ah, that’s not going to be a problem. I live alone.”
“Can a high school student live alone?”
“Well, I do, so yes.”
“Then both of us will be living together, do you realize that?”
“……………….”
Now that you say it, that’s what’s going to happen… Living together with Shiroyume who was definitely one of the top beauties in our school… Isn’t this actually crazy? No, but this is only because there’s no other way…
“…You definitely did not think that far ahead.”
"”N-no, I didn’t, so?”
“You’re shaking really hard…”
“S-shut up! I don’t care about that!”
“No, you have to care about it, you know? If you’re careless, you might die socially, you know?”
Damn, that's a good argument. But I don't even care about that.
“Social death is nothing compared to your actual death!”
“Why…Why are you going so far for me…?”
“Because you haven't given up on life yet.”
“!? …What makes you think that?”
Shiroyume probably does plan on dying. However, that’s just her intention. But that’s just because she’s come to believe that there’s no other way but…
“Isn't it because you still want to live that you told me everything that happened to you today, even though it’s the first time you talked to me?”
“T-that…”
“And you said it yourself. You don’t want to die yet.”
“I didn't say that.”
“Aah, sure, you didn’t say it directly.”
But she was certainly expressing her desire to live to me in a different way. When I asked Shiroyume if she was fine with this, she said:
“Even if you ask me if I’m fine with that or not, I can’t just say I am, can I? “
That certainly meant that she didn’t want to die yet.
“But even so, you——”
“Jeez, just shut up already! I bought you! That means, right now, I’m your master! You don’t have the right to refuse when I tell you to come home with me!”
I know I’m saying something absolutely absurd. Human trafficking is not allowed in Japan? I don't know, I don't care. If my taking the blame would save Shiroyume, then I’ll take as much of the blame as possible.
“………….Fufu.”
“What are you laughing at…”
“You really are an absurdly idiotic and infinitely good-natured person, aren’t you?”
“…Shut up.”
“I’ll let you buy me.”
“Eh?”
‘I’m saying that I’ll let you buy me.”
Looking at her smile as she said that, it seemed like a lie that she was about to disappear at any moment just a while ago. She still seemed ephemeral, but it appears that I can't really do anything about that right now.
“Hmph. What’s with your condescending attitude?”
“Isn’t that just how it is, my Master?”
And so that’s how our life together began.
