Chapter 24 Turn Me Loose, Im Dr. FeelGood 5
“You are Fu of the Wasteland?”
In the center of Tsutomuporita stood the colossal palace, Tsutom castle.
In the vast hall, so large its edges seemed to blur into the distance, I knelt on one knee, finally facing the great chief, Misago.
“Lord Misago, I am deeply honored by your invitation.”
“I don’t like lies. They taint the soul.”
Misago, the muscular elderly man, dismissively waved off my greeting and tossed the scimitar in his hand towards me.
“I also dislike beating around the bush. If you truly believe yourself to be this generation’s Laokan, pick up the sword and stand.”
“I have no such thoughts of being this generation’s Laokan.”
I had no interest in being Laokan, and I certainly didn’t think I could defeat this strong old man just by picking up a sword.
“Then why were you born with black hair, and why do you wield the Sword, Chiyonovagna?”
“My father and brother both have black hair. As for wielding the Sword, I only did so to leverage its legend and confuse the Makiano people.”
“Then why did you come all the way here?”
“To make the overwhelming Makiano army withdraw from the wastelands.”
“Would you risk death for that purpose?”
“If it is the duty of a noble, then I am prepared…”
Misago stood up from the throne and took large strides towards me.
“I don’t like lies. I won’t say it a third time.”
“…I am here to take responsibility for my failure.”
“Failure? What failure?”
Misago, sitting on his haunches in front of me, spoke:
“I involved my people in a fight we couldn’t win.”
“That happens repeatedly when leading people. Do you intend to take responsibility every time?”
“I don’t know what the future holds. I am simply doing what I believe needs to be done now.”
Misago stared intently at my face, but suddenly, with a loud smack, his large hand grasped my face.
“Hmm, I see… No wonder chiefs and generals can be easily disarmed by this. My heart is also being swayed by you… but my head is telling me to kill you immediately.”
“That… I expected from the beginning.”
As I spoke through the grip of his hand, he blinked a few times as if pondering something, then released me.
“Well, don’t be so hasty. Bring the dice!”
At Misago’s loud command, women hurriedly brought over a bowl and two dice on a small stand.
“The old elder of the long ears says that the gods determine people’s fate through dice.”
He handed me one of the two dice, the octahedral one.
“Throw it. Determine your own fate.”
There was no refusing.
I remained on one knee and threw the dice towards the white, milky bowl.
The result was a two.
“Try again.”
The roll came up four.
“Lastly, throw the six-sided die.”
The final result was a six.
“Two, four, six… I see, you are restrained. At your young age… If you’re a bound beast, there’s no need to kill you if you’re still useful.”
Misago said this with a chuckle, but then suddenly became serious and shouted, “Call Harriett!”
Such a fearsome man was yelling so loudly that it made your ears ring. Normally, anyone would rush to comply.
However, the girl who appeared next was wearing pointed shoes and walked slowly, gracefully, toward us.
Her luxurious, jet-black hair was free of split ends, and her long eyelashes formed delicate, soft arcs like the feathers of a young bird. Her emerald green eyes, perched above a well-defined nose, sparkled like gemstones.
“What is it, Father?”
Her voice was as melodious as a bell… truly the epitome of a beautiful girl, if not a bewitching beauty.
“I’m marrying you off to this young man. If you’re of such caliber, you might be able to endure even this poison. Become one of the chains that bind him.”
“And who is this person?”
“A demon from the land of evil, a devil who confuses people.”
Having said this, Misago stood up and, seeming to lose interest in me, returned to his throne.
“You’re free to go… Ah, that’s right. The general wanted one, so before you leave, make sure to forge another sword Chiyonovagna.”
“If that’s the case, we can use the one we brought…”
“I don’t want a countryside-forged sword Chiyonovagna. Use that sword as a model and make another one.”
Pointing to the bayonet that had been thrown near me, he instructed. The girl, named Harriett, picked it up and grabbed the collar of my clothing with her other hand.
“Come on, let’s go. This place is boring.”
“Excuse me, Lord Misago, but we must take our leave. Until next time…”
“There won’t be a next time. I’m getting old, and meeting someone like you is bad for my health. Go disappear somewhere.”
With that, the audience ended, and I managed to save my life, gain a wife, and acquire a treasured sword.
