ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
A small island off the coast of Kamakura, Enoshima. This island had long been a popular tourist destination and it hadn’t changed even now. However, the rocky area on the backside of the island had been closed to the general public. Why? It was because there was a dungeon entrance at the back of a cave between the rocks.
“I’m completely sane, you know. Actually, I acquired a certain rare skill in a dungeon the other day. So, I was thinking of trying it out.”
〈A rare skill?〉
〈By dungeon, do you mean that one??〉
〈Kabukicho Dungeon?〉
〈That’s the one where Aoi Kadoyama went missing, right?〉
〈So the rumor was right?〉
Come to think of it, I’ve been hearing rumors that the rescue operation I did before was being streamed online illegally.
They said the footage came from a drone operated by the Dungeon Management Agency that had been hacked by someone. Although the Dungeon Management Agency had sent a report to the official and issued an apology to us, but there were no traces left behind. The culprit’s methods and motives remained unknown. No one knew how much of the footage had been leaked either. Fortunately, it seemed only a small part of the whole rescue operation had been exposed to the public. I couldn’t say anything rash here, so I ignored the viewers’ questions and entered the dungeon.
“The Enoshima Dungeon is a Class 5 dungeon and it’s 25 floors deep. I think we’re going to need to defeat the boss, so I’m going to go all the way down at once without taking a break.”
◇ ◇ ◇
“Alright. With this, we’ve arrived in front of the boss room on the 25th floor.”
〈That was way too fast!〉
〈As fast as ever, lol〉
〈The 25th floor is the deep level, right?〉
〈Normally, any ordinary explorer would need 2 to 3 days to reach the 25th floor. LOL〉
〈Nishida can only do dungeon exploration on his days off, so he always does one day trips.〉
By the way, the Enoshima Dungeon had often been mistaken for an underwater dungeon like the Tama River Dungeon since the Enoshima Dungeon as located on a small island surrounded by the sea, but the Enoshima Dungeon wasn’t an underwater dungeon at all. In fact, it was quite a monotonous dungeon, with caves stretching from the upper levels to the deep levels. Not to mention, most of the monsters that appeared couldn’t even be used for food. If I didn’t have any other objectives today, I would never have set foot in this dungeon.
“Now then. I will defeat the boss now.”
〈I’m starting to feel sorry for the boss. LOLOL〉
〈The boss is tearing up because it knows Nishida is targeting it.〉
〈What’s the boss like?〉
〈I think it’s a bird-type monster.〉
〈I heard it resembles an ostrich.〉
〈It’s a big bird with three necks called Tristrich.〉
〈Apparently, people call it the ‘Ostrich Club’ LOLOLOL〉
〈Does it make a “try~” sound?〉
〈You guys… Don’t push it, okay? Absolutely don’t push it!〉
When I stepped into the boss room, a giant bird was waiting for me.
“””KIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!”””
〈What an awful screech, lol〉
〈So noisy~〉
〈It hurts my ears~〉
〈So it doesn’t make a “try~” sound.〉
〈Is this really the kind of sound an ostrich makes?〉
〈Well, it looks like an ostrich, but it’s still a monster in the end.〉
The boss was relatively small. It was only about 10 meters tall, including the head. It looked quite similar to an ostrich, but it had three necks and each neck supposedly breathed out a different type of breath attack.
“Right is fire… Left is ice and the middle is poison…. I think? Well, it doesn’t really matter which is which.”
The boss lunged at me with astonishing speed. Its speed was quite similar to that of an ostrich.
THUD THUD THUD THUD!!
As we passed each other, I swung my kitchen knife. The boss, which had rushed past me, continued running for a moment before slowing down and then…. One by one, its three heads tumbled to the ground.
<WHAAAAAAAAAAT?!>
<As ruthless as ever.>
<The boss was practically begging to be cut with necks that thin.>
<All in a single swing…?>
<Not one swing. Three. He slashed three times within one second.>
<You actually saw that? LOL>
<Maybe that person is an explorer too?>
Ding ding ding ding~♪
“Seems like we’ve defeated it. And now, the real challenge starts now…”
When an explorer acquired a new skill, some degree of understanding regarding its use and properties were naturally imparted to the explorer. The ultra-rare skill I had obtained was no exception. I had come this far by following the voice in my heart. However, I still didn’t know the full details of the new skill. Uncertain of what would happen next, I waited anxiously.
Even though I had defeated the boss, but no treasure chest appeared. Instead, a figure of a person came into view. It was the figure of a young woman. She was clad in a kimono, with long black hair that flowed like silk. She carried herself with elegance and dignity. From her appearance alone, she looked to be around twenty years old.
〈Huh? Who’s that?〉
〈She just appeared out of nowhere.〉
〈Is she Nishida’s stalker?〉
〈Wait, upon closer look… Isn’t she kind of translucent…?〉
〈Whoa, you’re right.〉
〈Is she a ghost?〉
〈Scary…〉
〈She might be an undead-type monster.〉
〈What the heck is going on?〉
〈Anyway, hurry up and tell us what the skill does.〉
“Umm… The new skill I’ve obtained is Heroic Spirit Summon. Basically, it’s a skill that allows me to form a contract with heroic spirits and summon them.”
〈Heroic Spirit Summon?〉
〈Never heard of it.〉
〈It must be a super rare skill then?〉
〈Heroic spirit… So does that mean she’s a historical figure?〉
〈Who could she be?〉
〈Most famous figures are men and yet he’s able to summon a woman out of nowhere. LOL〉
〈As expected of Nishida.〉
〈Since there aren’t many female historical figures, we should be able to guess who she is.〉
The woman clad in a kimono opened her mouth to speak.
“You must be the one who freed my soul, which had been trapped in the labyrinth of the other world.”
“Ye-Yeah. I’m Nishida… Kenichi Nishida. What’s your name?”
She appeared to be no more than 20, around a decade younger than me, but her graceful demeanor and presence really carried the weight of her life experience. In reality, she had lived long ago, and if we considered the time of her death into the equation, she would have been much older than me.
And then, the woman told me her name.
“My name is Masako Hojo… That is all I could remember.”

T/N: There’s an inside joke in this chapter. There’s a Japanese comedy group called the “Ostrich Club” and their catchphrase is “Shall we give it a try?” (やってみるか? = yatte miru ka?) and the boss ostrich’s cry is “yatte~” so I translate it as “try~”
