An active hunter from Hokkaido was thrown into another world
Chapter 27 Goal achievement!
The next day, we went to the local hardware store and placed an order for two hundred and fifty of the cheapest forks and spoons.
I thought they would cost around a hundred yen each, like at a dollar store, but even the cheapest ones here were four large copper coins. They were made of brass and cost about three hundred yen each. However, since we placed a large order, they gave us a small discount, bringing the total to twelve gold coins.
We paid six gold coins as a down payment and will pay the remaining six upon collection in three days.
Next, we bought a pot and a frying pan, one of each.
Saran looked delighted as she made her choice. It’s heartwarming to see.
Although that heavy-duty frying pan looks like it could flatten my skull if used as a weapon. It would probably cook meat perfectly, though.
After carefully examining our purchases and putting them in the magic bag, we headed to the guild.
We looked for jobs with a high priority…
I think tackling a threat like wolves would be a good choice.
We prioritize missions involving the safety of weak individuals, like children or women. The job pays five gold coins.
We followed a farm road on the map, reached the village, listened to the village chief’s explanation, and identified the location of the wolf sightings. We hunted down deer and butchered them in a spacious area, hanging the meat from a tree.
We climbed a tree in a slightly distant spot and waited. As the scent of blood attracted the wolves, Saran skillfully shot them down one by one with her arrows.
“(Bows are great because they make no noise, right?” (Whispering)
“(Exactly! Bows are just as good as guns, if not better!)”(Whispering)
Saran is smiling brightly. She’s really shining today. I can’t even come close to imitating her.
The reason there are no people hunting with bows in Japan is because it’s prohibited by law.
It’s a strange law… Considering bows have been used since ancient times.
In other countries, there are many people who hunt with bows.
Hunting bows are popular, especially the “compound bow.” It’s a modern bow design that combines pulleys and levers, making it compact yet much more powerful than traditional longbows. There have even been cases of hunting bears with them.
The power of a bow increases with its length. Japanese traditional bows are quite long. They are longer than the height of a person. They are known worldwide as one of the most powerful types of bows.
With shorter bows, there is more flex and a larger difference in tension between drawing and releasing the arrow. As a result, it becomes challenging to draw a powerful bow using only human strength. However, longer bows have less flex, making it more manageable.
The characteristic of a longbow is having a smaller difference in tension between drawing and releasing, allowing for the creation of powerful bows overall.
The compound bow replicates the characteristic of a longbow by incorporating pulleys and levers into a compact design. I’m not very familiar with the details, though.
Perhaps I should give Saran a compound bow as a gift someday. With her strength, she could easily draw the most powerful bow. It would be great if we could buy it with the magic bag.
As they noticed us up in the trees, a considerable number of wolves started to attack.
In such cases, it’s time for the shotgun.
Bang! Click!
Bang! Click!
Bang! Click!
We fired rapidly and eliminated five more wolves. We aimed for their heads since we’ll be taking their fur later.
We successfully exterminated a total of fifteen wolves.
The deer’s meat is spoiled from the wolf’s attack, so we’ll give up on that and skin the wolves instead. We take turns keeping watch while doing so.
Saran is better at it, of course… Well, I’ve never skinned a wolf before.
Thanks to the scent of the wolves, no other animals approach us, and we manage to skin fifteen fur pelts.
They’re still fresh and too large.
We put them in a bag, and Saran carries it as we head back to the village.
We show the fur pelts to the village chief as proof of our successful extermination and get their signature. Then we return to the Topurus Guild to report.
We receive five gold coins as our reward and sell one fur pelt for six silver coins.
That’s a profit of twelve and a half gold coins.
“Oh, it’s a bear!”
“Yeah, a bear.”
We can’t leave it be, can we?
The farmers are scared and unable to work in the fields.
I came to this world after being killed by a brown bear, so I have a trauma associated with bears.
Now I have a rifle, so I need to overcome that fear…
“Saran, what are bears like? How big are they?”
“They’re black, and they have a white crescent-like mark under their neck. They’re slightly bigger than you, Shin.”
Oh, it’s a black bear!
Not a brown bear!
In that case, it’ll be a piece of cake!
The Tsukinowaguma, well, even though they’re big, they’re about the size of an adult human, weighing around 150 kg. It’s nothing compared to the Higuma, which can reach a maximum of 3 meters and weigh 400 kg! As someone living in Hokkaido, I’ve only seen Tsukinowaguma in zoos, you know.
So, I go to the magic bag and buy lots of marshmallow-like candies.
“What are you going to do with those?”
“Bear bait.”
I visit a village known for bear sightings, talk to the village chief, and get an old pot from them. Then I head to the field where bears are said to appear, set up a campfire, and ask Saran to use magic to light it. We start sprinkling the candies into the pot…
The sweet aroma fills the air…
“Let’s hide now.”
We hide in the farm equipment shed and take out the Remington M700 rifle, waiting patiently.
“(Here it comes!)” (whispering)
Saran is excited. Bears really can’t resist sweet treats, can they? They’re not even afraid of fire. They’ll knock over the campfire, stick their faces in the pot, and become completely absorbed in the candies.
“(Covering you ears.)”
“(Yes!)”
BOOOOM!
“Whoa!”
“Oh no!”
The cabin is filled with a massive cloud of dust from the gunshot.
It was a failure…
But it’s a Tsukinowaguma, you see.
With a single shot from the rifle, it struck the armpit where the front leg was extended, right into its heart, and it died instantly. Just to be safe, I’ll shoot one more round into its head.
Bears have strong vitality, and they can even pretend to be dead.
“Bears really love honey and sweet things. I see now,” Saran admires.
Search for “Bear Crack Hunting” in overseas videos.
That’s how Americans hunt bears.
It feels somewhat unfair…
“Grrrrrr!!”
No, Saran, that’s quite something…
…Wait, wow, are you lifting it up?
Even though you’re stumbling, you’re carrying a bear that seems to weigh over 100 kg.
You’re amazing, Saran. I’ve thought this before, but you could probably beat me to death with your bare hands…
Let’s make sure we don’t get into a marital quarrel.
For now, let’s head toward the front of the village chief’s house, still stumbling.
The village chief must be surprised.
The farmer whose field was damaged kindly provided a carriage for us, and we loaded the bear onto it and arrived at the guild.
We received a reward of six gold coins and sold the whole bear for twelve coins.
They say that the meat, fur, and organs can all be sold at high prices.
It’s wonderful, isn’t it? In Hokkaido, bears can’t be sold. They’re completely worthless.
Universities and research institutions take them away in the name of research. Nobody wants the fur either. And all those claims about them being used in traditional medicine are lies. As for the meat, who would eat such a thing? It’s not like it’s tastier than the meat you buy at a supermarket. “Making a fortune by selling bears” is just not possible in modern-day Japan.
The next day, we captured another bear in a different village…
“We’ve reached a hundred gold coins!”
“We did it!”
The two of us give each other a high-five in front of the guild’s trading counter, filled with joy.
“Hey, you two…”
We’re called out by the owner of the counter.
“We’ve got a plan for a joint guild operation to take down a Mid Dragon. Would you like to participate? It’ll be done by five teams together…”
“We’ll pass.”
We can’t use guns in front of such a large group.
We only work as a duo. It’s out of the question, completely.
See, even Saran is making a face of strong opposition.
“Well, it’s just that the more experienced hunters want to do it to make a name for themselves, right?”
“Well, yeah, that’s true.”
The old man has a stern expression on his face.
“If we don’t want to do it, we won’t do it!”
“Seems like you don’t have any desires.”
That’s right. I have none. Absolutely none.
“Anyway, we’re heading back to Saaplast, so is there any escort job available for the return journey?”
“We’d like you to stay a bit longer.”
“You can even join another team if needed.”
“Not interested.”
…There must be something they want us to stay for. They still want us around, don’t they?
It’s just ridiculous…
Well, if there’s nothing, I guess we’ll just walk back home together.
We received the set of 250 forks and spoons from the hardware store, paid the remaining six gold coins, and returned to the cheap inn.
