Chapter 37: The Blunders That Define Alto
—Leticia was taken away.
I couldn’t do anything.
I realized that Leticia was the villainess in the original story, but I couldn’t do anything about it.
I just watched as she was taken away.
—Even though she had helped me so much.
“Hey… what does this mean? They say Lady Leticia was leaking confidential information to another country…”
“But General Agito said it, so it must be true… I used to admire her, but now I’m so disappointed…”
“Really. If the general came, that means His Highness the King approved it too… It feels like we’ve been deceived.”
After Leticia was taken by that so-called general and his soldiers, the students began talking about her.
I listened while staring blankly in the direction she was taken.
“Hey, what do you think?”
“What do I think… They came all the way to this academy, so it must be true, right?”
“But from the way the general spoke, it sounds like even the Duke is involved, doesn’t it?”
“If that’s the case, the empire might attack us soon… Lady Leticia really did something terrible…”
Everyone was labeling Leticia as a villain, even though nothing was confirmed yet.
But among them, one girl raised her voice.
“W-Wait! Lady Leticia doesn’t seem like someone who would do such a bad thing! There must be some misunderstanding!”
—It was Aria.
While everyone else blindly believed the information around them, Aria chose to trust her own eyes and intuition.
Truly the protagonist, her mental strength was on another level.
I couldn’t help but respect her courage to voice her opinion in the face of overwhelming opposition.
However…
“But… really?”
“Yeah… since the general said it…”
“I never thought Lady Leticia would do such a thing, but… after seeing that, it’s hard to deny…”
“Yeah, and if the king himself acknowledged it…”
Aria’s plea fell on deaf ears. No one listened to her words.
Everyone kept saying, “Because the general said so,” or “After seeing Leticia like that…” Some even claimed, “The king acknowledged it,” even though they didn’t know if it was true.
Just as I was feeling disgusted, I overheard an even worse conversation that made the students’ previous gossip seem mild in comparison.
“Ha, finally gone. That woman was such an eyesore.”
“Just because she was a duke’s daughter, she acted all high and mighty. I’m glad she’s gone.”
“Yeah, exactly. She rejected our proposals but got engaged to some low-rank noble. She has no taste.”
“That’s why she got caught!”
“Right! But… I wish I could have enjoyed that body at least once… it must be amazing… If I knew this would happen, I would’ve attacked her…”
“Totally!”
“”Gyahahaha…—GUBEH!?””
“Shut your filthy mouths, you scum!!”
I couldn’t hold back my anger and punched all four of them.
The boys fell to the ground, clutching where they were hit, glaring at me with fury in their eyes.
“Who do you think you are, fiancé of the criminal!? How dare a low-ranking noble touch me!!”
“Yeah, you shouldn’t even be able to talk to us— “Ha?” —Hiii!?”
When I punched the pillar right next to the face of the guy leaning against it, the impact left a deep dent.
The guy was shocked by my punch and stared in fear at the cracked part of the pillar. Not only he, but everyone around who had been gossiping, turned their attention to me because of the noise.
But I didn’t care about any of that.
Leticia’s sad smile vividly appeared in my mind. Overwhelmed by my own helplessness and anger towards those badmouthing her, I shouted loud enough for everyone to hear:
“Stop whining, you bastards. You all praised Leticia endlessly, and now you turn on her and blame her for everything. You have no right to say anything. Keep your mouths shut until the truth comes out, you trash.”
The atmosphere froze.
But only for a moment.
“Ha!? Are you kidding me, you bastard!”
“Didn’t you see the general and soldiers!?”
“The days when a viscount like you could act high and mighty are over!”
“You’re involved too, aren’t you!? Turn yourself in, you scumbag!”
“Yeah, absolutely! You must have helped her!”
The enraged students showered me with intense backlash.
Well, if someone suddenly hits all your sore spots, you’re bound to get angry.
But why were they suddenly accusing me of being involved?
…Was I worried about what these people thought of me?
Is that why I didn’t help Leticia?
…This is really starting to piss me off.
“Shut up, you cowards! Badmouthing someone behind their back… you act all high and mighty but you’re just a bunch of sheep following the crowd! You want to fight? I’ll take all of you on right here and now!”
As I activated the “Cloak of Darkness” and shouted, the insults abruptly stopped. The students started looking around, searching for someone else to make the first move. Ha, none of them dared to step forward.
Sigh… they’re pathetic, and so am I.
Ah, I think I’ve finally snapped.
What was I even doing until now?
Even without thinking too hard, I’ve messed up plenty in the past. What was I scared of?
No more overthinking!
“HAH… HAHAHAHA!”
I couldn’t help but laugh at how foolish I’d been, standing around helplessly.
The others around me stared with a mixture of fear and unease.
But now, I didn’t care about their opinions at all.
There’s only one thing to do!
And it’s my specialty, after all.
In other words—
“Ha… how pathetic!! You cowards can keep living your lives swayed by others’ opinions! I’d rather die than live like that!”
—If I’m going to mess up, I might as well do it in a big way, right!?
After flipping off the people around me, I grabbed my bag and started running, all the while operating my phone to open a thread.
I had no more doubts in my heart.
Doubting things was never my style anyway.
I’ll just go with the flow, as usual!
Don’t underestimate someone who’s been messing up all their life!
With a sense of clarity and an incredibly high energy level, I typed out a message faster than ever before and posted it:
1: Former Earthling
