Chapter 5.1: From a Shy Silver-Haired Girl to a Yandere
After completing the routes for Mahiru and Toa, the last person I met was Satori Jindaiji.
She was a girl with long silver hair tied in a braid, her emerald eyes sparkling, dressed in a white shrine maiden outfit.
In the original story, ‘Black Tide, Great Serpent, Island of Prayers’, she was the daughter of one of the three major families, the Jindaiji family, and a popular heroine as the next head of the family.
She was a shrine maiden who had dedicated her soul to the island’s god, bound by a curse that prevented her from leaving the island.
She was generally quiet and blunt, but that was just one side of her. Deep down, she loved telling stories and wanted someone to listen to them.
And she had another dream.
“Just once, I want to see the world outside the island.”
Bound by the curse that kept her on the island, she held this wish close to her heart. In the original story’s climax, she managed to escape, but the moment she left the island, she met a tragic death at the hands of the islanders.
In the original tale, Satori uncovered the island’s traditions and the secrets of the mysterious disappearances, learning that everything stemmed from rumors spread by her uncle, a member of the three major families.
She took the family leadership from her uncle and, alongside the protagonist, created a new island, achieving a happy ending.
But that route meant abandoning the other heroines and engaging in a long battle to fundamentally change the island’s structure. It was a problem beyond just saving the other heroines.
So, I needed to find another way to give Satori a reason to stay on the island.
Our meeting happened one summer day when I visited the Black Tide Shrine.
There, a silver-haired girl was quietly offering prayers in front of a small shrine.
Her silver hair shimmered, and her white shrine maiden outfit swayed in the breeze. Her eyes were closed, fully focused on her prayer, and the sight was so picturesque that I couldn’t help but stare.
“She’s beautiful,” I muttered unconsciously, captivated by her prayer.
“—⁉︎ W-What?”
Startled by my voice, the girl looked up. When she noticed my gaze, her cheeks turned bright red.
“…”
Without a word, she bolted away. But in her haste, a notebook fell to the ground.
“Hey, wait! You dropped something!”
I quickly picked up the notebook and called out to her.
But before my voice could reach her, she vanished.

The next day, when I returned to the shrine, she was there again.
“…”
She was quietly praying with her eyes closed. I watched her for a while, lost in thought, until—
“Huh⁉︎”
Sensing my presence, Satori turned around, her eyes wide with panic.
“You again⁉︎”
As she tried to flee, I held out her dropped item.
“Here, your notebook. You dropped it yesterday, right?”
“Huh⁉︎”
She took it and stared at it intently. Flipping through the pages to confirm it was hers, she glared at me accusingly.
“Did you look at it?”
I nodded in response.
Her cheeks flushed red in an instant.
“…! I’m done for. I can’t go on like this!”
She screamed as if losing her mind, clutching her head. Her silver hair fell into disarray, and her emerald eyes shimmered with tears.
“No, no, no, it was actually pretty good! I don’t think it’s anything to be embarrassed about.”
“Be quiet. That’s not the point. Being praised doesn’t make me happy at all.”
“I especially liked the frog character.”
“Ughhh, stop it! Don’t say any more!”
“But…”
As I tried to speak, she raised the sacred bell in her hand dramatically.
“If I hit you… will your memory go away?”
“Hey, you’ll get divine punishment for that!”
“It’s fine. I’m the next head of one of the three major families.”
“You power-abusing tyrant.”
Mercilessly, she swung the bell down, its beautiful chime ringing out.
If it had hit my head, it wouldn’t have been such a lovely sound. It would’ve been a dull thud mixed with my screams, creating a hellish contrast.
“She actually tried to hit me!”
“Erase your memory.”
“Memory isn’t something you can just control like that.”
“That’s why I have to hit you.”
“Maybe you should change your title from shrine maiden to berserker.”
“Then I’ll hit you and *then* change my title.”
“…Time to back off.”
I turned and sprinted away.
Satori Jindaiji was different from the other heroines, in more ways than one. I never imagined even getting close to her would be this difficult.
This was going to be a challenge.
With that thought, I raced down the shrine’s steps.

The next day, when I visited the shrine again, Satori was there. Even though it was summer vacation, praying every day wasn’t normal. As I realized how unusual she was, she turned around.
She was ready, raising her sacred bell with purpose.
“I’ve been waiting.”
“I didn’t come here to get hit, you know.”
“If you hadn’t shown up, I would’ve gone to your house.”
“You know where I live⁉︎”
“Heh. I’m from one of the three major families.”
“That’s an abuse of power!”
Satori approached slowly. Her movements were refined and beautiful, but the raised bell ruined the effect.
“I’ll erase your memory.”
“Wait a second!”
I hurriedly opened my sketchbook and showed her the “Laughless Frog” from her story. It was my best effort, drawn the night before.
“…What’s this? A frog?”
Satori’s eyes widened as she looked at the sketch.
“I drew it based on my impression of your story. A token of friendship.”
“Are you mocking me?”
She shot me a displeased look, her gaze as sharp as ever. But she lowered her arm, much to my relief.
“What do you think? Not bad, right?”
“…Yeah.”
She seemed to like it. Seizing the moment, I got to the point.
“If you’re up for it, how about we make a picture book together—your stories and my drawings?”
“A picture book? Why?”
She tilted her head at my suggestion.
“Because it sounds fun, obviously.”
I caught her gaze and grinned.
“…You’re weird.”
She replied bluntly, then looked back at the sketchbook.
“But it does sound kind of fun.”
With that, she gave me her first smile.
