Chapter 45: Escaping from the Captive Room
The next morning.
Once again, after thoroughly enjoying the destruction of my dignity, I stared up at the ceiling with eyes like a dead fish.
“…I want to go home.”
I just wanted to get back home as soon as possible, no matter what.
I wanted to sleep in a normal bed, live a normal life, and go to the toilet freely. I wanted to return home and live a minimally healthy and civilized life.
But as I thought about that, I suddenly remembered the large number of surveillance cameras installed in my room.
“…Yeah, I really want to get off this island.”
That’s right. That had been my wish from the start.
Not just out of a shack or an old house, but out of the house entirely—off the island.
“But escaping on my own is impossible…”
I couldn’t remove the handcuffs, and even if I could, the problem was the iron door.
It might be possible from the inside, but since it was locked from the outside, there was nothing I could do.
In the end, the only ones I could rely on were Mahiru and Toa.
All I could do was pray that they would come while Satori was away.
“Then there’s the matter of Uncle.”
Even if the two of them found my location, if Uncle spotted them, it would be game over in an instant.
In short, the handcuffs, the door, and Uncle.
Unless I dealt with those three things, my dream of escape wouldn’t come true.
“For now, I’ll weaken Uncle.”
By repeatedly pressing the emergency button and summoning him multiple times, I could wear him out. By gradually draining his stamina, I could slow him down when the time came.
That was the only form of resistance I could manage right now.
“Hey, how many times is this now!”
So I decided to press the button every thirty minutes, but by the fifth time that day, it seemed he had reached his limit.
Uncle flung the door open with a bang and bellowed.
“Cut it out already.”
“I’ve got a stomachache, so what can I do?”
“I’ve prepared easily digestible food for you. The nutritional balance should be perfect too.”
“It’s healthy food, sure. But no matter how careful you are with meals, if stress builds up, your stomach’s going to act up.”
“…That’s a fair point.”
Uncle let out a huge sigh. As he pressed his brow and gazed off into the distance, I could tell he was pretty stressed out himself.
“I’ll get some intestinal medicine.”
“Forget that—take me to the toilet already. If I mess myself, you’re the one cleaning it up, Uncle.”
“Sigh…”
“If you don’t want that, then take me to the toilet, or better yet, let me go outside.”
“The second option is absolutely no.”
As he said that, Uncle removed the restraints from my legs and dragged me out of the room by the arm.
When we reached the toilet— I suddenly spotted a figure outside the window.
It was blonde hair, gleaming in the sunlight. The makeup was flashy, and the glossy hair curled in loose waves.
“A blonde gal?”
I felt like I’d seen her somewhere before. I couldn’t recall the details, but…
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Looks like we have a visitor. A blonde—”
“It’s that group again.”
Uncle sighed.
“Could it be the four-person group from next door?”
“Yeah. They’re a pain because they come one after another every day. Probably splitting it into morning, afternoon, and evening shifts. If they’re coming anyway, I’d prefer they all show up at once.”
“Oh, so they’ve got a shift system over there too.”
“A shift system?”
“If three people are holding you captive, that’s inevitable.”
I said it with a distant look in my eyes.
A shift system felt downright nostalgic by now. I could believe it was months ago.
But in reality, it was something that happened over the summer vacation, which meant I’d been held captive twice during summer break—a summer so intense that only a dry laugh escaped me. Though it wasn’t really funny.
“Sorryyy—oh, the manager guy’s not around, huh.”
The door burst open with a bang, and the gal’s cheerful voice echoed down the hallway.
Uncle glanced toward the entrance for a moment, then quickly shifted his gaze back to me.
“Ah, don’t worry about me.”
“I can’t take my eyes off you.”
“It’s fine. I won’t try to run or anything. With the entrance blocked, it’s impossible anyway.”
I flashed a salesman’s grin and rattled it off.
“……………………..”
Uncle just stood there, hand on his chin, saying nothing.
This was probably my chance. A once-in-a-lifetime big chance. I had to create a situation where I was alone, no matter what.
“…Fine. But don’t do anything stupid, got it?”
“Roger that.”
With a full-faced smile, I said it, and Uncle sighed as he headed toward the entrance.
I waited until the sound of his footsteps faded away, then let out a small breath.
“Alright then.”
What was the right move here?
Escaping through the window was tricky due to the height. It might be doable with free hands, but with the handcuffs, it was even harder.
That left sending an SOS outside. If I could let people around know my location, the two of them might notice.
The problem was I had no way to do it…
I looked around the room again.
Fireworks would be ideal, but there was no way a simple captive room would have something like that.
In fact, I couldn’t even spot anything that could make a noise.
Making noise to signal was out.
That meant there was only one thing left to do.
I made my way to the window in the hallway, raised my restrained arms, and tried to force the window open. My fingers wouldn’t move properly, so it was a struggle, but I managed to get it open somehow.
“Suu… haa…”
I stuck my face through the gap and took a big breath.
The scent of the tide tickled my nostrils, and the sunlight filtering through the trees warmed my skin.
Every time the breeze brushed my cheek, the rustling of the trees echoed, and I finally realized this place was in the middle of a forest.
“The air tastes too damn good.”
After days without it, joy nearly overflowed from breathing the outside air.
But this wasn’t the time to get lost in emotions.
First things first.
I needed to shout my location to the two who were probably searching for me right now.
“I’m…”
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
And as I thought about what life would be like after getting off the island, I shouted with all my might.
“I’m Akira Akiyoshi! I’m right hereeeee!”
My voice echoed around, reverberating.
But there was no reply.
All there was the gentle sound of the wind and Uncle’s agitated voice from behind.
Still, I shouted with all my strength once more.
“Mahiru! Toa! If you’re there, answer me! I’m being held captive in this old house! Help me!”
But again, no response.
Maybe they just weren’t nearby, or maybe my voice was too weak.
If it was the latter, I’d regret it forever.
In a fit of desperation, I kept shouting at full volume until my voice gave out.
“Help me! I’ll do anything you say, just help me! Anything! Anything at all!”
There was no pride left in me.
No matter how much dignity got destroyed, no matter what tragedies awaited, getting out of here was the top priority.
So I had no intention of stopping the shouts. Even if my voice grew hoarse, I had to keep yelling with everything I had.
I leaned out the window frame to shout again— that’s when it happened.
“…Senpai?”
A voice called out.
It was soft, sly, but somehow familiar.
“Toa?!”
Through the trees outside the window, I saw a shadow rushing over.
A girl running up, breathless, holding down the hem of her uniform.
Seeing her made relief wash over me inexplicably.
She had finally come. Toa had!
“Senpai! You really were here!”
Toa rushed up to the window and peered in with her big eyes.
“You figured out where I was pretty quick.”
“I heard a rumor about some guy’s screams in the middle of the night, so I came to check it out, and then I heard your voice. You were shouting your love for me, so I knew right away!”
“My love?”
I had no idea what she meant.
I wondered if she’d heard some other guy’s screams, but there was no time to correct her.
We needed to get out of here before Uncle showed up.
“Toa! Get me out of here!”
“Got it! But in return, you’ll do anything I say, okay?”
“Oh, you heard that…”
“Of course. There’s no way I’d miss anything Senpai says.”
I see. That was reassuring. Scary, though. Just a tiny bit scary.
But right now, that intensity felt reassuring too.
“For now, hold out your arms so I can get the handcuffs off.”
What Toa pulled from her pocket was a small pin—the same one she’d used to pick the handcuffs when I was captive before.
Come to think of it, Toa had mastered this special skill for picking handcuffs. She really was a reliable underclassman.
I pulled my body back a bit and stuck just my arms out the window.
Then, along with the feel of her soft hands, came the click-click of her working on the handcuffs.
“Nice one, Toa.”
“Hehe, I’m glad I learned it for future use.”
“Lucky you. Maybe I should learn it sometime.”
“I won’t teach you.”
I muttered it offhand, and suddenly Toa’s hands stopped.
“Why not?”
“That’s a secret!”
She said it with a little devilish smile.
I had no idea why it was a secret, but seeing that sly grin after so long made me truly feel like this hellish life was finally ending.
My heart lightened up.
“They’re off.”
“You seriously saved me.”
And just like that, the handcuffs came off.
But that didn’t mean it was over.
Uncle wouldn’t let it slide after hearing my shouts.
“Wait. You think you can escape?”
