Chapter 29: It’s Okay to Spoil Me, You Know?
There had been a time when I believed my room had no surveillance cameras.
I had forcibly convinced myself that the ones in the living room, bathroom, and hallway were simply due to high security awareness.
However, upon closer inspection, this room was no exception; they were installed here too. Even at a glance, there were at least three.
One was beside the desk, another on the ceiling near the door, and the third on top of the curtain rail.
All of them were small and hidden in inconspicuous spots, but with my powers of observation, I would not miss them.
Installing three in a room this small made it seem like the security awareness had maxed out and overflowed, but at this level, I no longer had the energy to remove them.
There were probably more that I had not noticed yet. In the end, resisting was pointless.
I had no choice but to accept it as it was.
With that in mind, I turned away from reality and lay down on the bed, only to find myself staring up at the ceiling when
“Senpai.”
As declared, Toa entered the room right after her bath. Her hair was slightly damp, and a faint shampoo scent wafted through the air.
She wore pink pajamas that made her look more defenseless than usual, and unlike her typical scheming vibe, there was a softness to her.
“I have come for our marital activities.”
However, her personality was not soft at all, and she murmured that incomprehensible line as she sat down on the bed.
When I hurriedly sat up, she scooted closer until our bodies were almost touching.
“Isn’t this too close?”
“We are a married couple?”
It was no use. This was Toa in her non-conversational mode.
The non-conversational type of Toa peered into my eyes with a beaming smile.
As I grew flustered under her close-range gaze,
“I thought this during the confinement too, but Senpai, you speak so calmly, yet your face turns bright red right away. That’s so like you, and it’s cute.”
“No, that’s not—”
“—I could just eat you up.”
She bared her teeth as she said it and slowly drew her face closer.
I braced myself, closing my eyes, expecting her to bite my forehead or neck.
But in the next instant, she had pulled back, and she kept glancing up at the surveillance camera on the ceiling.
She was probably worried about someone’s gaze.
“Let’s get serious and talk about something for a bit.”
Toa said that, then flapped the hem of her pajamas as if to cool her flushed body, and
“I read about it in the island newspaper just now, but…”
She turned a serious gaze toward me.
“Satori became the head of the Jindaiji family, right?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“It was decided at today’s gathering, right? The one Senpai attended.”
“Yeah.”
I answered briefly.
Then Toa’s eyes wavered just a little, and
“So, does that mean Senpai will stay on the island to support Satori?”
“That’s…”
It was a question I could not answer right away.
I did intend to support Satori, but that did not mean I would not leave the island.
I just wanted to change this island’s insular values.
I wanted Satori, the other great families included, and all the islanders to move freely between the island and the outside world.
To live on the island but head out on weekends. To go on trips together during long breaks.
I just wanted those ordinary things. Leaving the island should not be a major event but just everyday life. That was the mindset I wanted to create.
Of course, since Satori was the head, it all depended on what she thought.
But the Satori from before had longed for the world outside the island.
—I want to go out to the world beyond the island.
That wish, that longing, surely had not died. It had to be somewhere in her heart…
“As I said before…”
To me, who had not yet sorted out my answer, Toa directed a straight gaze and spoke in a serious tone.
“I am not attached to this island. If Senpai goes to the mainland to pursue your dreams, I will follow, and I want to support you by your side. So, Senpai…”
Toa got on her knees and slowly pulled my head into a hug, and
“—it’s okay to spoil me, you know?”
She whispered it.
“Do not worry about the island or the great families; entrust everything to me. As your junior, as your wife, I will envelop you gently.”
She hugged me tightly, and her soft, warm sensation brushed my cheek. It was just my head, yet a happiness washed over me as if my whole body were wrapped up.
“So, close your eyes slowly and let your body relax. That’s it, slowly.”
Filled with Toa’s scent, with Toa alone, only her whispering voice echoed in my ears.
For a moment, I thought it might not be so bad to entrust everything to her and escape the island.
But when I closed my eyes, countless bad ends flashed through my mind: in the original story, Toa lost her smile, Satori lost hers, Mahiru lost hers.
That scene clung to my brain, filling me with unbearable anxiety.
The reason I did not try to take everyone and leave the island was, in the end, because I was a coward.
Because I was a coward, I made half-hearted decisions. Because I was a coward, I turned conservative and maneuvered so no one would get hurt.
Even though that might not be the right answer.
It might even be hurting them deeply.
“You do not have to think about anything. Just me and Senpai, Senpai and me. That’s all there is.”
Toa’s voice rang gently in my ears.
She kept hugging my head and rolled onto the bed with a flop. I followed her momentum and lay down too, enveloped in the bed’s soft feel and her warmth.
“Close your eyes slowly. Yes, like that. Slowly.”
My consciousness gradually grew hazy.
In the quiet room, only the sound of her heartbeat and her lullaby-like whispers echoed, lulling me into a deep, deep sleep.
