Episode 16: Let’s Go Shopping Together
TL: lime
ED: Spynine01
It was the evening of the day when we came back from visiting Aunt’s grave.
At the shopping street in front of the station.
“Taro, you go home first. I’ll come home after I buy some ingredients for dinner.”
Rin said with a smile.
She always cooks for me whenever she can.
One time she’s in the house chatting with me, and the next thing you know, she’s out shopping for ingredients, and soon after there’d be food laid down on the table.
…I wonder if it would be okay to remain that way forever.
“…………”
Isamu-jichan had said,
Rin stayed here because she wanted to be near me.
She has strong feelings for me, her husband.
But how long am I going to act like a guest instead of who I actually am?
“Taro?”
“Rin, well. Let’s go shopping together.”
“Eh…?
Flabbergasted, Rin opened her mouth and rolled her eyes.
“W-What’s wrong?”
“W-Well… you know, the baggage. It’s heavy, isn’t it? I thought it would be easier if we split it up and take it with us instead of letting you carry it all the home by yourself. Is that a bad idea?”
Rin shakes her head and says with a smile, “I’m sorry.”
“I don’t think it’s something to be sorry about! I want to go shopping with you!”
“Let’s go then.”
“Un!”
Rin smiled even brighter than usual today.
We left in a line and went towards the supermarket.
I picked up a cart and walked over to Rin, who sighed in exasperation.
“Taro, we don’t need a cart.”
“Eh? Why not?”
“If we put them in the cart, we’ll just end up buying unnecessary stuff, right?”
Rin takes the cart from me and puts it back in its place.
“I shop with a basket in my hand. If you can feel the weight in your hands, you’ll know if you’re buying too much or not.”
“I-I see… I’m learning a lot from you, Rin-san.”
“Umu, you should learn more. Fufu~.”
I picked up a basket and followed Rin.
Rin quickly selected the ingredients and put them in my basket.
“You’re really good at this.”
“Well, yeah. I’ve been a housewife for a long time, you know.”
“Rin, aren’t you just eighteen..?”
“I helped my grandmother with the housework after my mother died until we got married.”
So she’s very skilled at cooking, cleaning and laundry all because…
“…I’m sorry.”
I was inexplicably stupid.
I had never thought about why my wife’s cooking skills were so good.
I just assumed it was something she could do from the start.
But it’s not.
There was a reason, an accumulation, a history behind the question “Why?”.
It wasn’t a story that could end with, “You’re a really skilled cook.”
“What’s wrong, Taro?”
“Ah, no, well… Sorry, it’s nothing.”
“What, what are you worried about? Why don’t you tell me, I won’t get mad at you.”
Rin laughed and jokingly said.
“I thought your housekeeping skills were yours by default. I guess you had to level up to get them though.”
Ah shit, why is it a game-like metaphor at such times!
Rin’s eyes darted at me, “Pfft…”, she burst out.
“AHAHA! It’s so obvious, Taro. Real life is different from video games, you know?”
“T-That’s right… I’m sorry. I didn’t know what was going on.”
Rin was not angry.
Rather, she says with her chest out, her smile even brighter than before.
“That’s right, in order to become Taro’s wife, I’ve gained a lot of experience to be perfect for you.”
“T-That’s right. I can tell just by looking at your daily cooking, yes.”
“Just my cooking?”
“No, the room is always spotless, the shirts are perfectly crisp, our towels are heavenly fluffy. It’s perfect.”
“Umu, good.”
Rin nodded her head in satisfaction and smiled.
“Thank goodness, Taro, you really were paying attention to me all this while.”
“Of course I’d see it… We do live together after all.”
“Then what was on the dinner menu the day before yesterday?”
“Oh that…”
Not good, I don’t remember.
“That’s not good. You can’t just eat your wife’s cooking without thinking, you know. It’s going to ruin our marriage, don’t you think?”
“Ah, well, then..! I-I’ll cook, too!”
Those were the words that came out of my mouth.
“Eh?” Rin rolled her eyes.
“I’m going to start cooking too. Rather I will make it. Please let me make it.”
Who am I to just eat what’s served to me and call it a day?
That’s not good enough.
I’ve made up my mind that I’m going to be able to respond to her wishes, even if it’s just a little.
It’s not good to always take what’s given, you have to give back sometimes too.
“…………Okay.”
Rin chuckles.
“I’ll ask Taro to do it sometime, then.”
“Y-Yes. I’m sure you can. Ah, but I have zero cooking skills, so…”
“I know. I’ll give you a good lecture when it’s time.”
“Teach me, please.”
“Yes, yes, that’s fine. However, my training will be tough, you know? Will you be able to keep up with it, Taro-san?”
“I-I’ll do my best.”
Rin smiled and reached for the plastic bag.
“Ah, it’s okay. I’ll take it for you.”
“We’ll both carry one each.”
“E-Eh! Well, that’s a little…”
“What, you don’t like it?”
“N-No, I don’t mind… but we’ll look like a bakappuru and stand out.” (TL: bakappuru- a japanese slang that means stupid couple.)
“Ignore what other people think of us. We’re newlyweds, so we should enjoy our own world right now.”
Rin tries to go ahead after saying such words.
I took her hand and followed right behind her.
Afterwards, she gave me a good long lecture on cooking and shopping tips.
On the way home, we walked side by side through the city at dusk.
“There’s so much I don’t know, my head feels like it’s going to explode…”
“This is pathetic. Your wife knows about 50 times as much as this.”
“Fifty times as much… That’s a lot of knowledge. You’re like a great sage.”
“Well, maybe 50 times more than that too.”
“What the hell..?”
Rin laughed happily at my response.
The two of us walking side by side with a plastic bag in our hands, our figure looks a little…
I wondered if I looked a little like a husband in Rin’s eyes today.
I thought it would make me happy if she thought that, even if just a little bit.
