Episode 15: Reunion with Her Mother
Tl: lime
ED: Spynine01
After having lunch with our grandparents, we went to visit Rin’s mother.
“Long time no see, Mom. Did you miss me?”
We were at a cemetery in the middle of a mountain.
The cemetery was lush and green, it was far from the hustle and bustle of the city, and that’s where Rin’s mother laid.
We split up and cleaned the headstone.
We offered incense and put our hands together.
Rin closed her eyes and remained silent.
But she doesn’t seem to be sad at all.
Instead, she had a bright smile plastered on her face.
“…………”
The reason why she’s not crying right now is because Aunt passed away a long time ago.
When we were kids, Rin’s mother suddenly got into an accident and didn’t survive the crash.
I stood in front of Rin’s mother and bowed my head with my hands clapped together.
Aunt, we got married recently.
That’s what I decided to report, but I wonder if she’s really positive about our marriage.
She might say that she can’t entrust her precious daughter to an unreliable man like me.
“Okay, status report over!”
Rin’s smile was radiant.
“Are you done?”
“Un. I’ve said a lot of things that I wanted to say, and I’m sure my mom will tell me to hurry up and go home since I’m still an examinee.”
I know it’s a little late, but we’re both examinee students here.
It’s just the beginning of May, but we have to start thinking about our future soon…
“All right, let’s go home then. Let’s have something sweet on the way back!”
“I agree~!”
Rin has no dark shadow within her now.
She’s walking forward normally. She didn’t even look back at Aunt’s grave on the way back.
I felt the passage of years pass just by looking at her.
She has overcome her grief over time and become much stronger than she was before.
It was amazing to look at.
Afterwards, we went to a sweet shop for a snack, and then headed back to the station.
“Are you two leaving already?”
At the ticket gate, Rin raised her eyebrows into a figure eight and said to her grandparents. [TL:The eight-character eyebrows would look like the the mandarin character for eight (八).]
“We’ve seen how well you both have been doing, and we don’t want to keep bothering you two youngsters.”
“Baa-san, why don’t you go home first? I’ll stay at Rin and Taro’s house for one night…”
Slap, Kaoru-baachan hits his head.
“Hey, you stingy, monster-like old hag.”
“What is it?”
“N-No, it’s nothing! Hii-… scary.”
Good grief, Isamu-jisan shook his head.
“Ah, that’s right. Taro-chan, come here, come here.”
“Me?”
Ji-san beckoned to me.
And so the two of us moved to the edge.
“Here, Taro-chan.”
“What’s this?”
“It’s a travel ticket. You haven’t had your honeymoon yet, have you?”
“Th-That’s right… is it bad..?”
“I’m telling you! You and Rin should go on a trip together soon. Before you get too busy with your exams.”
I was genuinely flattered by his kindness.
He smiled and patted me on the back.
“Don’t look so glum.”
“Do I have that look on my face currently?”
“Oh, come on. You’re so quick to show your face, Taro-chan. If you cheat on her, you’re in a whole lot of trouble, you know. You’ll be found out immediately.”
“I won’t, I won’t.”
I’m not really capable of having an affair.
“I’m grateful to you, Taro-chan.”
“Eh…?”
“It’s all because of you that Rin is so healthy right now.”
Ba-chan had also said that to me earlier.
However, I’m not sure I’ve really done anything special to Rin, though.
“Don’t be modest… Her mother died, and her father rarely ever came back home. I can’t tell you how much Rin was saved by Taro-chan, who was there with her during those tough times.”
I’m sure Rin was very depressed when Aunt died.
“There was once an offer to take Rin to the countryside with us.”
“Eh?! I-Is that so?”
I had never heard of it before.
I know that after Rin’s mother died, Isamu-jisan and Bachan had moved here temporarily.
But I didn’t think that there was any talk of taking her to the countryside…
“Yes. However, Rin herself said she that didn’t want to do that. She said that she wanted to stay here with Taro-chan.”
“I see….”
So that’s how much Rin had thought of me.
“Taro-chan is kinder and nicer than you think. I’m not being patronizing to you. You’re naturally kind. That’s something that no one else can properly do.”
“…I wonder about that.”
“That’s right. You’re a good man. You should be more proud of yourself sometimes.”
Hit, Hit, Jii-san hit me on the back.
I was happy to have his approval for us.
After a while.
“So long, Rin! Taro-chan! Have a good day!”
“Don’t catch a cold, you two! I’ll come visit you next time!”
The train carrying grandpa and grandma was leaving.
Rin was waving her hands in the air for so long that it seemed like she was never going to stop.
“…………”
“What’s wrong, Taro?”
“Eh, well. It’s nothing… Let’s just go home.”
I said, grabbing Rin’s hand.
She rolled her eyes and smiled.
“That’s right.”
In all honesty, I’m lacking in a whole lot of things.
I don’t actually know if I’m worthy enough to protect her for her entire life.
But I did think to myself, “I’ll do my best to become a man who can meet her every need.”
